I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Well (I think) I’m 5 weeks today and this morning nausea has hit me like a tonne of bricks, dr prescribed me cyclizine yesterday and said only to take it if I NEED it.. obviously I’ve started it, didn’t have much effect in my previous pregnancies but hoping it does this time around x

hope everyone is not suffering too bad ♥️

LucindaE · 30/09/2022 20:48

MamaoftwoodI am suprised the doctor said that, as while I'm not medical, I know it has to build up in your system to be effective. Hopefully, it will be more helpful this time, but if not, I hope that GP will consider alternatives.
greenerfingers Sorry to hear about acidity. As you say, it really adds to the sicknkess. Remind me what anti-acid you are taking? Many swear by Omprazole.
Okapi99 I hope that Xonvea helps you a lot.
abbs1 Your comments about noticing a weekly hormonal build up are intriguing.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Hey all. Hope we're all doing alright. I've been taking cyclazine since Thursday evening and so far so good. No nausea or sickness. I don't know how far I am though. 6 weeks 4 days by lmp but more likely less than that as I only got a bfp 7 days ago. So maybe 5 weeks.

Haha don’t worry, thank you! I’m taking the cyclizine and haven’t been sick yet, it’s awful though because I just feel like I’m just waiting for myself to be poorly so I’m not enjoying the fact I’m pregnant if you know what I mean x

@Okapi99 sending you lots of love!! How far along are you now?

MommaFiona · 02/10/2022 19:20

Hello, this is my first ever MN post! I’m on my 2nd HG pregnancy, only 6 weeks along so I’ve a long road ahead. Any SAHM of a toddler know how to get through this and still keep your toddler happy and stimulated? I’ve had my first bad day HG wise (avoided so far since I started taking medication as soon as I knew I was pregnant) and my husband was able to do the entertaining. Not sure how I’ll manage tomorrow if I’ve another day like today! I don’t generally let her watch tv because it turns her into a zombie and there is inevitably a meltdown when I turn it off

LucindaE · 02/10/2022 20:23

MommaFiona Welcome. Sorry you are suffering again. As you are a veteran, you don't need my normal spiel about the usefulness of kesostix, as hospitals take them seriously, how an anti acid can make a huge difference, and about flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, and the juice for tinned fruit. I do hope others with more than one can advise on how to keep your toddler occupied. Would it be possible to get LO to do things like using building blocks or Lego or whatever, while you lay on a sofa for some of the time? Many find that they do have to rely on children's TV etc to keep them entertained. Have y ou got friends/relatives who could take LO part of the time? Can you get additional meds? Did things get better as the last pregnancy went on? Sorry for all the questions!
Okapi99 Cheering you on!
Mamaofwooo Waiting for the symptoms to kick in is nerve wracking for previous sufferers.
I hope everyone is copiing.

Hi lucinda, what do you mean about ketostix?

LucindaE · 03/10/2022 22:35

Okapi99 Well, hospitals take their measurements seriously, will admit at 3 plus (pre-pandemic) but many find better tests of dehydration are a dry mouth, dark scanty urine, inelastic skin, and headache. You can get them online.

OP posts:
Okapi99 · 04/10/2022 03:30

Ah i see. My hospital doesn't admit women now. They just take us to HG day clinic's where we get an IV (or 2) and told to go back the day after if still needing fluids.

It happened in my last pregnancy, I once was in every day for 5 days. New cannula each day. It was horrible.

LucindaE · 04/10/2022 20:36

Okapi99 A day clinic must be easier for sufferers with LO's, but that does sound dismal about the daly visit with a cannula! I didn't say 'ketones' after mentioning the kesostix measurements. Glad the message made some sort of sense, anyway.

Hope everyone is doing ok. I’m now at 34 weeks and it has eased off mostly. I managed to get down to a tablet a day on cyclizine and off the Prochlorperazine. I had the covid jab last Friday and not sure if it’s coincidence but spent the weekend vomiting. Seems like any change to my routine or body throws me off and I throw up!
But the end is in sight. I think about this thread a lot and don’t post enough but sending lots of love to everyone.

tixy89 · 05/10/2022 11:07

Morning everyone, I'm new here! :)
I am currently pregnant with my first baby (12+6) and omg it's been rough so far.
I was diagnosed with mild hyperemesis gravidarum and was admitted for IV fluids last month as I couldn't keep down even a sip of water. It was absolutely horrendous. I don't think I've ever been this sick in my life, I thought I was dying. I was put on cyclizine, it worked for a week and then nothing. They added promethazine and nothing. A couple of weeks ago I was finally given ondansetron and I started living again... I can eat and drink and function! I am on a very low dose (4mg twice daily) but it's been working really well so far. Luckily my GP had good knowledge about HG and was great overall.
Nice to meet you all, and good luck with your pregnancies 🤗

LucindaE · 05/10/2022 20:26

tixy89 Welcome. I am sorry that you have suffered badly, and glad that Ondansetron is helping. Have they got you on a laxative, as so many women find they need one one Ondansetron? Here is my normal spiel which I hope may help. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
Worryant Thank you so much for your encouraging message. So glad to hear things are so much better generally. Sorry that the Covid booster gave you a nasty relapse.

Still no xonvea here, but also still no sickness... I think I'm 6 weeks ish now. I booked a private scan for Sunday.

I'm taking cyclazine and b6, so but if I can get this other drug I'll swap to that

Weathergirl1 · 06/10/2022 23:39

Feeling miserable here, with late pregnancy woes (not mobile, uncomfortable, pain in my lower back/sciatica) and now I'm starting to feel nauseous again 😬. Never been this pregnant before as my first was evicted at 37+2 and I passed that milestone yesterday. Just need to hang on until Wednesday but this nausea is not helping - not sure what I can do to be honest, have taken omeprazole too this evening and it doesn't seem to have made a difference ☹️

Sorry for the self pity. Hope everyone else is okay. @ChloeHel how are you doing?

Okapi99 · 07/10/2022 14:50

So, I've finally got a prescription for xonvea. After jumping through hoops left by my gp.

But, he says he can only prescribe 2 tablets twice a day, and has given me 20 tablets.

I'm sure I've read everywhere that the starting dose is 2 tablets in the evening, then if more is needed you can increase up to 4 a day.

BellaBella38 · 07/10/2022 19:21

Hi everyone I appreciate that this is a long running thread, but I've found so much of it helpful. Just knowing I'm not on my own has got me through today x

LucindaE · 07/10/2022 20:39

BellaBella38 Welcome. I am glad you have found reading through these threads helpful. I don't know if you are a veteran, but if not you will have read my normal spiel about kesostix, anti acids and suggested drinks.
Okapi99 I'm glad that you've got Xonvea, but it's dismal the GP is being so stingy with it. Is it expense, I wonder? I don' t know it's expense compared with other drugs, though I know Ondansetron is.
Weathergirl1 You have every right to feel sorry for yourself. Sorry to hear that the nausea is back, plus the other late pregnancy woes. Cheering you on for Wednesday.

BellaBella38 · 07/10/2022 21:25

@LucindaE No veteran, first time mum and only 11 weeks. Today was a particulary bad day where all I've kept down is some plain rice and 500ml ORS drink, just working my way through my next pint of water now. My skin is now so dry that one way or another I'm dragging myself to Neal's Yard tomorrow to buy some nice moisturiser! On the whole the meds have massively helped the actual vomitting, but the only relief from the nausea is when I'm asleep. Yay for pregnancy! 🤦‍♀️

LucindaE · 07/10/2022 21:50

BellaBell38 Bio Oil is a wonderful moisturiser that appeals to my stinginess. Silly me, I forgot to ask what meds you are on.

OP posts:
Cuppasoupmonster · 07/10/2022 22:15

@BellaBella38 my skin has also been horribly dry no matter how much I drink!

I haven’t been sick for 3 days now. And I managed to walk my dog today for the first time in 6 weeks (DH has been doing both walks until today). I hope and think I’ve turned the magic corner, I feel so much better than a few days ago - 14 weeks today. I hope this isn’t insensitive I just want others to see that relief can and does happen. It will take me a while to get my strength back though after barely eating for 6 weeks and being up vomiting 3 times a night.

i will never forget how awful the last 6 weeks has been. You all have my sympathies. It’s just hideous.
