I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@Harley8888 you're not alone in feeling like this, not that it helps you. So many of us have had similar thoughts and there were times in the early weeks when I would have happily taken a bullet to the head to make it all stop. It did get better though.

However, equally, if you can't or don't want to continue you don't have to and nobody would judge you for that decision. I would definitely push for a medication change or ask for extra medication on top. Have you spoken to the pregnancy sickness support line?

I have had HG twice and the second time was much worse, however it didn't last as long as the first time so you might be lucky and experience the same. Forget about work and try not to worry too much about your 3 year old. They will be ok and won't even remember this stage of your pregnancy. I hope you feel better soon

greenerfingers · 08/09/2022 21:34

Hello all, I hope everyone is a bit better than when I last posted . @Harley8888 sorry to hear you're suffering so bad. My sickness started earlier but also tapered out just a little earlier, so it could be that it'll go a bit faster (I did take extra meds this time though). It's rearing it's head again now that I hit my 3rd trimester but God I'm so grateful to be past the constant vomiting and nausea stage. Currently it's just aversion to food and a bit of reflux but nothing compared to what it was. At that time I had no idea how I would get through the next hour but now it's gone it feels a lifetime away.

For those who have it first time I hope that's a bit of hope for you Flowers. And those still suffering I hope there's not long left till you're freed of it.

Thank you @LucindaE

Its been a rough few days - endless vomiting, sleeping, nausea, night sickness. The upside is I seem to be managing some foods outside of the beige things I’ve been eating for the last 3 weeks, but I have to time it carefully so they have a hope of staying down. I think I’ve lost about half a stone already and my stomach is constantly rumbling/cramping - has anyone else has gastric issue with HG?

sending luck and strength to all of you. What a hideous journey.

Harley8888 · 11/09/2022 19:26

Thanks @LucindaE

@ohCARP thank you.. the doctor prescribed a higher dose of xonvea but its not really helped. Ive been signed off work too for 2 weeks so less pressure there.
@greenerfingers I am looking forward to having some relief.. i am trying so hard to think of the end goal.. sorry its creeping back up in your 3rd trimester.

@Wouldloveanother I've been having the same issue with the gastric cramping for the last few days.. I think its just having an empty stomach with a lot of acid. It can get quite uncomfortable at night especially

Im thinking of calling EPU tomorrow but I think theyll just urine test me and send me home. The GPs obsess over ketones..and I'm fed-up of it.. I've read online that it's not the most accurate way to judge whether you need fluids. Surely the fact I'm not keeping food or drink down and am visibly weak and drained but because I was 3 ketones it's not enough to give me some IV! Do I have to be on my deathbed to be considered for treatment? I'm going to have PTSD from the word ketone alone 😂

LucindaE · 11/09/2022 20:13

Harley8888 Does an anti acid help at all? Do keep pressing for stronger meds if Xonvea isn't helping, exhausingas it is. So true about ketones. Most hospitals used to admit at 3+, but post pandemic, things are probably different.

Wouldloveanother Good news about more food choice. The pains can be due to violent retching affecting the stomach muscles.
Apologies to anyone overlooked.

OP posts:
greenerfingers · 11/09/2022 22:39

@Harley8888 I agree with @LucindaE, I found more than anti sickness meds, anti acid meds worked much faster as most of my sickness was coming from acid build up. The nausea was still there and quite depressing in all honesty but I could manage and get on with it. Without the anti acid meds I was totally immobile

Harley8888 · 11/09/2022 22:45

@greenerfingers is that like omeprazole? I've got some in my drawer that I was prescribed a few months back. Wonder if that's ok to take

@LucindaE yes my first pregnancy I was admitted everytime I was at 2+ ketones! That was in 2018 so a lot has changed. My hosp says 4+ now. Just seems unfair

greenerfingers · 11/09/2022 23:30

Yes, for me omeprazole worked but I had to be patient said the doctor. It took about a week to really kick in and she gave me double the usual dose. If I missed even one dose I'd really feel the difference. She didn't want me becoming reliant on it so when my sickness started to feel a little easier we cut it down to 1 dose and then slowly I weaned off of it by 18 weeks. It might be worth speaking to your doctor about taking that too and seeing how you get on. Wishing you all the best xx

Wouldloveanother · 12/09/2022 20:11

Can I ask how many times a day everyone is being sick?

LucindaE · 12/09/2022 21:03

greenerfingers Great advice. It is interesting how much of a difference an effective anti -acid can make.
Harley8888 Yes, 4+ does seem excessive. I hope the Omprazole helps.
wouldloveanother I hope you get some answers soon. It is odd the way medics so often count a vomit as one heave - whereas lay people generally count a vomit as a heaving session. I am sure this often leads to medics underestimating how violently ill sufferers are.

Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

OP posts:
ohhollyfred · 13/09/2022 08:48

@Wouldloveanother on average around 20 times a day. Not able to keep liquid of food Down at its peak.

I was in hospital every four days for drips from week 6-12.

Week 17 now and much better. Still sick but only a few times a day.

However don't compare amounts of vomit to how you feel. Even relentless nausea with no vomit can make you very unwell is your aren't eating and drinking.

This is my second HG pregnancy and both times I tried prochlorperazine at the beginning and it didn't help but tried it again at about 13 weeks and it's now an absolute saviour alongside omeprozole and ondansetron

TisforTucan · 13/09/2022 13:26

Hi everyone, 3rd pregnany had hyperemesis with the previous babies right until they came out 😭 and they were both boys so convinced it's a boy again.

I'm 7 weeks, I feel like utter crap.. I have lost my appetite and sick mainly in the evening but nausea in the day. I can't remember not wanting to eat before but weirdly drinking milk constantly.

I'm worrying will baby be ok? I cant even think of food or brush my teeth without gagging 😥 Jesus I'm here gagging typing about food 🤣😭

LucindaE · 13/09/2022 21:01

TisforTucan Welcome. As you are a veteran, you have no need of my normal spiel about 'have you got kesostix, as while not the best test of dehydration, hospitals do take the measurements seriously' and 'a good anti-acid makes all the difference' and 'do you find flat full sugar coke, the juice of tinned fruit and ice lollies any good'. Babies seem to thrive even on the miserable diet which sufferers are on in the early weeks. As you didn't have problems eating before I am including some suggestions from my normal spiel about food and drink. What meds helped you before, if any?
ohhollyfred Great advice. I am glad things are getting a bit better.

OP posts:
LucindaE · 13/09/2022 21:04

TisforTucan Sorry - I forgot to give you the drinks and food suggestions.
Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.

Harley8888 · 13/09/2022 23:19

@greenerfingers spoke to the doctor and am on increased dose of xonvea and he has prescribed omeprazole.. and omg.. a WORLD of difference. Can you believe Ive had a vomit free day and managed to eat a bowl of very salty chips which is the most ive eaten in weeks!! Thank you so much for the suggestion. Nausea has still been all day but this is such a big improvement and a huge relief. I just hope it carries on this way.

@Wouldloveanother everyday I was ranging 5 to 8 not including heaves. My worst day was 12. If I was to include heaves it would probably be in the 30 to 40 range.. the heaves cause horrible muscle pulls too so everytime I heave or vomit it feels like I'm being beaten up

greenerfingers · 13/09/2022 23:31

So glad to hear @Harley8888 !! I hope it continues to work as effectively and you can start eating and drinking again.

@Wouldloveanother I would vomit every hour, sometimes a few times an hour (even in my sleep Envy). This was even without eating, just bile and acid. If I ate that would come up immediately. After taking anti acids I wouldn't vomit but would just feel nauseous all day.

Hi ladies,

this thread was a lifeline for me, just knowing you’re not alone in your thoughts on your darkest days helped me! My HG finally went 4 hours after my daughter Kenna was born by CS on the 8th Sept, I literally had it the whole way through and was even throwing up on the operating table (could have been a reaction to the epidural but still none of the IV anti sickness worked!). Being able to eat and enjoy food again is amazing but the one thing I know for sure is I can never get pregnant again, it’s just not worth the risk of being so sick again. Pregnancy was the worst time of my life, but now she’s here all of the suffering was worth while (and I NEVER thought I would say that!)

TisforTucan · 14/09/2022 09:09

@LucindaE Thank you so much for this 😊. I do not have keto sticks should I have them? I don't remember not being hungry or wanting food with the last its terrible and I'm leaving whole meals. Im so bad right now i can go all day without eating because i feel so sick, talk of food and smell has me going too.

Fizzy is best for me too, anything flat seems to come back up but trying to drink lots of water/squash, I'm going to try some more drinks to help me but protein ones are a good idea as I like milk right now lol.

I was on cyclazine with both my boys but found it made me more sick lol and didn't help. I just learned to cope with what I fancied and could drink. Thank you

tweetypi · 14/09/2022 16:09

Hi ladies, I'm taking Xonvea which is helping with stopping vomiting and has taken away the worst of the nausea. I'm still feeling quite sick for about 6 hours a day and am doing pretty much nothing all day - watching tv and having a shower on a good day. Every day I'm getting headaches and feeling exhausted. Does anyone know if this is linked to HG or the meds or just general pregnancy? I'm currently 13 weeks and started suffering at 6 weeks with peak vomiting around 9-10 weeks. I'm signed off work until the end of the week so can manage being a bit pathetic but I'm not sure if I just need to pull my finger out and try harder to get back to normality or if this is normal and I need to let my body rest?
Any advice gratefully received!

LucindaE · 14/09/2022 20:29

AIM93 Thank you for your encouraging message. Enjoy your baby girl.
Harley8888 I am so glad Omprazole is helping.
Tweetypi Don't rush back to work. You need to be feeling a lot more normal to be able to cope with work, particularly as resting is as effective a treatment for Hyperemesis as meds. I am glad the Xonvea is helping a bit.
TisforTucan It's always helpful to have the magic sticks. If Cyclizine wasn't effective in your two other pregnancies, do ask for an alternative. There is a new drug called Xonvea which has helped various sufferers on here.

Congratulations! This gives me so much hope, I’m 32 weeks on Friday and still really suffering despite being on ondansetron/omeprazole/cyclizine/promethazine. I’ve just had enough now… it’s not even just the sickness, the constant nausea is just so draining and depressing.

AlM93 · 15/09/2022 14:03

@Hyperemesishell thank you! Bless you it is honestly the worst thing isn’t it, I was the same with the medication not working, it’s just so exhausting being miserable all the time! Your so close to the finish line now. I’ve just done my first food shop and WOW it was expensive 😂 definitely worth it though after 9 months of missing out.
