I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Very quiet on here: I hope that is a good, rather than a bad, sign. 😶

I heard back from the consultant today and they have decided just to keep me on cyclizine and prochloperazine until birth since it's working for me. The gp has also said that I'm to continue with reduced hours at work for the next 9 weeks until mat leave starts. She's been really supportive. Just need to phone and tell my boss tomorrow!

ChloeHel · 08/08/2022 22:37

@LucindaE Hi! The HG had pretty much subsided for me except for slight nausea in the evenings - I’ve been managing on one xonvea at night still. But this heat has brought the nausea back in the mornings and I was sick for the first time in 10 weeks! However I’m 32 weeks now so counting down the weeks!

hope everyone else is managing in this heat - because I’m blinking not haha.

Weathergirl1 · 09/08/2022 00:03

No HG update from me other than still needing the ondansetron... But we're at my parents which is 3 hours away and I had brown watery discharge this morning so am now stuck in their local maternity unit overnight for observation. ☹️

CTG trace was ok but kept losing the trace when the baby moved so it didn't pick up the accelerations and didn't pass the test. Was on for about three hours this afternoon and the room was about 28 degrees so not that happy! They've given me a steroid injection as a precaution and am having an ultrasound in the morning to check placenta position as it was low at 20 weeks. Hopefully can get through that and get the all clear to head home on Wednesday.A

Weathergirl1 · 09/08/2022 00:05

Argh posted too soon... Precautionary Cannula in left hand not helping. Also constipation not helping either as I daren' t bear down to try and go in case it triggers more bleeding - I've not been for over 48 hours and am starting to feel bunged up and quite uncomfortable 😭

Waredrobe · 09/08/2022 07:22

Hi, can I join you girls? I have had one successful HG pregnancy and one that was so awful that it ended with a termination at 7 weeks. My resting heart rate was close to 100 and my liver was getting damaged, in hospital 4 times before I was even 6 weeks. It was truly the worst thing I have ever experienced! I was heart broken to end the pregnancy but my older DD had to be the priority, she has to have a mum and the doctors where concerned if I could withstand another 30 odd weeks.

But the overwhelming urge to complete our family got the better of me and I am now pregnant again. I’m not feeling as sick as previous pregnancies so far, so that’s good news but I’m scared. So scared I’ve messed up, that we shouldn’t have ttc, that the HG will be bad again. I’m so scared and feeling rather stupid right now, why couldn’t I have been happy with my DD. I just want to cry. Can’t believe we rolled this dice again thinking it might be ok.

ohhollyfred · 09/08/2022 12:38

After some advice on steroids please.
12 weeks but haven't managed to stay out of hospital for more than 4 days at a time since 6 weeks.

Tried every anti sickness med on offer but sadly not working. Doctors now want me to consider steroids. Are they safe and did they work???? Seems drastic!

PopGoesBang · 09/08/2022 16:22

Hello all - apologies for the silence. Once the gestational diabetes diagnoses had settled and the switch in diet was in full swing I actually found my HG settled a lot more than it had and the last weeks of pregnancy were spent getting the house sorted and end of year bits for dd at school.
But I wanted to say a massive thank you for your support, in those difficult days it was a blessing knowing others were there and it wasn't so lonely.
My little girl arrived on the 1st August, at 6lb10oz and is doing amazing. Worth all those awful moments.

Thank you again and @LucindaE know your hard work and support is invaluable.

BalletN · 09/08/2022 20:01

@PopGoesBang Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl!
Sorry to hear so many people are having a tough week xx

LucindaE · 09/08/2022 22:10

PopGoesBang That's wonderful news. I am so happy for you. Enjoy every minute of your baby girl. I am so glad that this thread helped. GD as well as HG was a real challenge, I am glad you coped with it so well. Thank you for coming on to give us that happy news. 👏😃StarFlowers
Waredrobe Welcome. I am sorry you suffered so badly a termination was the only option before. I am sure that they will prescribe pre-emptive meds, and some who have suffered really badly before are really helped by that in a later pregnancy. It isn't silly to want another baby. I regret not going for it again myself. Some who have suffered really badly in earlier pregnancies have found that they didnt suffer as badly in a third pregnancy. I remember kalidasa was one, so don't despair.
ohhollyfred I am sorry to hear you have had such an awful few weeks. Sufferers from severe Hyperemesis on these threads have really been helped by steroids. I hope someone who has been on them can advise. They wouldn't recommend them if the small risk wasn't considered less of a risk than continuing to be so ill.
Weathergirl1 Goodness, that must have been stressful, and I am sorry for that worry and all the discomforts. I hope you can b e discharged tomorrow. Might they be able to prescribe a laxative?
ChloeHel That is happy news generally, though not about the vomiting episode.
BalletN Waves to you Spottybutterfly Snowwhit2020 and everyone...
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Congratulations @PopGoesBang !

@LucindaE - i escaped yesterday afternoon. No scan as small hospital and ultrasound dept not manned yesterday 🤦 but didn't have any fresh discharge (only clearly very old brown bits they weren't worried about). Husband brought me a folding step in so I could squat better on the loo and I managed to relieve myself after taking a double dose of lactulose the night before! Such a relief after three days... And baby passed the CTG first thing in the morning - I think the fact they confirmed it was breech (exactly same position as my first baby with head under my left ribs 🤷) after the consultant did a quick scan on the ward yesterday afternoon helped as we got the sensor in the right place 👍.

So we're heading home this morning and they've phoned through ahead for me and my hospital is supposed to be organising the scan to check the placenta.

@ChloeHel I have just seen the weather forecast for home and I don't like the look of it. 🥵 We're on the coast here and it's been so much nicer!

LucindaE · 10/08/2022 20:00

I hope someone can advise ohholyfred about steroids. As Waredrobe suffered so badly before, I suppose she'll be on steroids this time.
Weathergirl1 I am so glad that worry is over. A good idea about the folding stop. I think somone else said having your legs raised helps.
Still delighted about PopGoesBang's baby girl arriving. 🎉

Thank you everyone.
She's perfect in every way 🥰 my older dd is on summer holidays and watching her with baby is amazing as well.

There were some tough days to get through at times. But I'm so glad I did.

Waredrobe · 11/08/2022 09:08

Currently taking promethazine and xonvea which seems to be working quite well currently at 4 weeks plus. Just scared about how bad it will get. I have booked an appointment with MSI so that I feel in control, if it gets a bad as it has before I have a plan of action.

i just keeping thinking what have we done / why have we done this. I’m just wishing I wasn’t pregnant due to the HG. If someone could hand me a 6-12month old I would be happy.

information on steroid would be useful if anyone has any information.

ohCARP · 11/08/2022 20:55

Congratulations @PopGoesBang that's lovely news. I'm so glad your eldest is enjoying having a little sister!

My Hyperemesis is gone although I do have omeprazole for acid reflux which can make me feel quite sick if I forget to take it.

I'm 30 weeks and started having contractions on Monday and have lost some of my plug. Hospital say I'm not dilating and the contractions weren't painful as much as uncomfortable so I don't really know what went on. I had a feeling this baby would try to come early but I didn't expect 10 weeks! All quiet again now. Hopefully it stays that way for at least 7 weeks.

Hope everyone else is ok

LucindaE · 11/08/2022 21:41

PopGoesBang It's great your DD is enjoying her too. You deserve all the joyful times ahead.
Waredrobe I am glad that combination is helping at the moment and you have a back up plan. Sympathies.
ohCARP That must have been stressful. Glad it's gone off.
Apology to anyone rudely overlook.

Weathergirl1 · 12/08/2022 13:40

@ohCARP oh no, that's two of us then who've had a bit of an incident this week (I'm 30 by 12 week scan dates, but 29 from mine!). I've had steroids to mature the baby's lungs just in case, but everything seems to have settled down again thankfully.

Still feeling a bit nauseous despite the Ondansetron 🙁. The heat's awful but thankfully it's cooling down (so far) at night so we're managing to keep the inside of the house not too bad during the day. Hope everyone else is okay in the heat!

LucindaE · 12/08/2022 21:28

Weathergirl1 I can only join you in hoping everyone is coping in the heat.
Yes, you and ohCARP; as if it isn't enough to have Hyperemesis, you don't need other stessful events. Fingers crossed all stays uneventful for you both.

Hi everyone,

We too had a stressful event with midwife then hospital unable to find heartbeat on Doppler but then found it on scan. Long story short plus another huge detailed scan of baby’s heart and conclusion is baby was just being awkward and hiding! All looking normal and healthy…

Such a relief. Add to that the fact we then got covid… and the heat… I’ve been hibernating!

Sickness relapse via the coughing/ stress/ heat but back under control today. What a week.

love to all xx

LucindaE · 14/08/2022 14:02

Snowwhite2020 My goodness, that sounds a miserable experience. So glad baby was playing hide and seek. As if Hyperemesis, and the heatwave weren't enough, these sort of things are happening!

Handmaid2019 · 14/08/2022 19:02

Hi, I'm around 9.5 weeks pregnant and have got awful all day nausea, I tend to vomit a couple of times a day and Im also retching so many times during the day. I saw my GP 2 weeks ago and was prescribed cyclizine, i don't think it helps but I only take 1 per day, any more and I'm so drowsy. I also feel so unwell, I am barely managing to get up, I seem to be lay down on my bed or the sofa every day, I feel so weak, exhausted and heavy headed. I have been off work, but I am due back in tomorrow and I know that I am not well enough too. I am not sure if this is hyperemesis or severe morning sickness. I've really had some dark moments, wishing for a miscarriage quite a lot, but honestly, sometimes I feel like I am dying. I feel so guilty on my two dc - twins aged 10, I'm being such a rubbish mum to them. Sorry for the moan x

Snowwhite2020 · 15/08/2022 06:33

@Handmaid2019 I’m sorry to hear you are suffering so badly. I took cyclizine from five weeks three times a day and noticed a real difference if I took any less than three. That plus an anti acid- omeprazole- and I found I could function though I was still sometimes sick.

Talk to your GP about upping the dose and I would recommend an anti acid. There are other drugs you can try if this doesn’t work so keep going back to GP.

If the drugs can control things so you can eat something- anything- you should find the nausea improves a little. It is so grim. This is my second pregnancy and I suffered badly both times but there are things you can try to help.

love to you xx.

P.S if you do up the Cyclizine dose bear in mind it takes a few days to build up in your system and give you the maximum relief that it’s going to- or this was true for me at least.

LucindaE · 15/08/2022 17:01

Handmaid2019 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. That certainly sounds far worse than normal pregnancy sickness. As Snowwhite2020 says, if upping the dose of Cyclizine and adding an anti acid doesn't help, there are other meds they can try. Try not to feel guilty about the twins - they will soon forget this period of comparative neglect, andthey have each other for entertainment, which helps. It is no comfort to you, but intriguing that you should have avoided Hyperemesis with a twin pregnancy, only to get it with a singleton one. With most sufferers who have twins, it's the other way round! I quote my normal spiel, which I hope helps.
Sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
Snowwhite2020 Great advice. I hope all is well with y ou?
