I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hello 👋

I'm here. Still miserable. Flu is now a sinus infection and I'm still being really sick. Hope everyone is feeling better than me and has a relatively HG free weekend!

FateHasRedesignedMost · 27/03/2022 07:22

Hi ladies,

Just placemarking on new thread!

@Kalidasa

I’m so happy this pregnancy has been easier on you! Roll on May and the Pink Castle!

@ohCARP

Sorry you’re feeling so rough! Have you got antibiotics for the sinus infection? Being ill on top of HG is horrendous!

@Mellebacca

I’ve ordered some calcium and magnesium powder so will let you know!
Re my sore lips, I tried out the cold-sore aclovair cream and oddly it’s the one cream that’s helping! My bottom lip is nolonger peeling at all and my upper lip just has one sore cracked/peeling area that’s immediately soothed by the cream. So it must be some weirdly presenting type of cold-sore/herpes simplex virus or a similar virus. Still no blister like you’d expect with a cold sore though, so it’s a bit of a mystery!

PopGoesBang · 27/03/2022 07:51

Was looking at the list of due dates and was all excited to see me there 🤣

Happy Mother's Day to you all - I know it can be tough for lots of reasons. And if it is for you I hope you have something nice to look forward to and find the day as ok as it can be.

Melleebacca · 27/03/2022 08:41

@ohCARP oh you poor thing! Whenever I’ve gotten sick while pregnant, it’s been an awful, long drawn out illness. I feel so sorry for you!

@FateHasRedesignedMost I have a wart on one finger that I have spent years trying to get rid of. The start of my pregnancy it seemed to fade away a bit, but now it’s coming back. Perhaps there is something in late pregnancy that causes a flare up of viruses in the body? Interesting to know.

Did too much all weekend again. Just trying to cram in as much as possible before the baby comes. It’s a terrible idea, and I’m now wishing I started Mat leave earlier.

LucindaE · 27/03/2022 14:51

Melleebacca You know what Mother Hen always says.
FateHasRedesignedMost It's great about kalisada, isn't it?
PopGoesBang Good. A Happy Mother's Day to everyone.
My own mother - unlike me - disapproved of it and wouldn't let me buy a card or anything on that day. Back in the mists of history, when i was at school, teachers used to go round the class asking, 'What did you do for your mother on Mother's Day?' I had to phrase my answer so I didn't tell a lie outright. People would have been too shocked if I'd told the truth.

Hi everyone, I just found this thread after being recommended to me.

Just a question, I've been suffering HG now for 14 weeks, my experience is now I have a phobia of being sick. It makes me so anxious if I know I'm going to be sick, but there's nothing I can do. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this? Sad

Melleebacca · 28/03/2022 18:10

@EmmaJennie sorry you’ve had to join, and that you’ve been so sick. I don’t have a phobia of being sick, but I do a lot of mind over body stuff. Generally I could fake it for about a hour and then hurl everything up in a location where I felt more comfortable. I hate vomiting, and I hate the attention I get if I do it in public, so I tend to hide away until I’m feeling well enough to see people, and always have a bucket in my car.

I got proper sleep last night! So hoping my nausea is reduced today.

nee22 · 28/03/2022 18:35

@LucindaE thanks for the new thread!

@EmmaJennie I wouldn't say I had a phobia of being sick but I have a general anxiety and feeling of stress around eating/keeping food down/finding things that don't make me retch. I find it mentally exhausting trying to find things to eat every day as the same thing rarely works twice. People don't seem to get this when I explain it... seems pretty obvious to me though!

@ohCARP really hope you're seeing some improvement, it sounds awful.

I've managed to drink fentimans ginger beer (quite a lot of it!) the past few days, most I've drank in weeks.

tigger2022 · 28/03/2022 18:49

Hi - I got diagnosed today. Only 6.5 weeks so still a way to go till it subsides Sad

ohCARP · 28/03/2022 20:37

I can breathe through my nose again and I can move my head without it feeling like I'm being crushed. I even managed to get out of bed today 🥳

Still quite sick but I'm able to eat a bit more now. I'm almost looking forward to the scan on Wednesday but part of me thinks all my illnesses have probably ruined everything and I will have lost this one too.

I managed to play with my toddler this afternoon though which was lovely.

Welcome to the new members, sorry you've had to join such a rubbish club!

LucindaE · 28/03/2022 21:06

Welcome to EmmaJennie and Tigger2022. EmmaJennie Good advice from others. We have had sufferers on here who had a phobia about vomiting before they suffered, not sure whether or not anyone's developed a phobia through vomiting with Hyperemesis, though I think many find getting a stomach bug after they've had the baby brings back dismal memories. It might be worth asking about counsellling for the stress of that from Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 who will phone back with good advice. Are your meds working reasonably well?
Tigger2022 Welcome. Are you a first time sufferer? What meds have they put you on? Here is my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously.
When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
Melleebacca That ability to delay and avoid a Public Puking session sounds impressive. Not a thing I could do, sadly.
nec22 Now, that's intriguing, as my daughter said she was really helped by ginger beer when she had salmonella poisoning, but I haven't mention it on here because it's ginger!
ohCARP With any luck, your scan will be a real reassurance. Great that you could play with your toddler and some of the aches and pains have gone. You are so right: this is the thread that nobody wants to be on!
Waves to all.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

@ohCARP Ah I’m so glad you are getting over your flu!! I have the same scanxiety for Wednesday too :( I’ve been counting down the days, it can’t come quick enough! I swear the 12 week scan is the longest waited out thing ever! But I can’t wait to see the crazy bean that’s making my life hell!

The HG has been quite bad the last 3 days. The nausea is so unbearable at times, I actually begged DH to get me a frying pan so I could try and knock myself out - of course I didn’t! I’ve had Bridgerton to keep me entertained but my god, the colours are so vibrant it actually makes me feel worse sometimes haha.

Hope everyone else’s Monday has been ok :)

ohCARP · 28/03/2022 21:28

@ChloeHel scanxiety is EXACTLY the right word. Although I'm kind of numb too?

I've never watched Bridgerton but I know what you mean about bright colours. It's weird how non sounds can be so LOUD.

Totally relate to wanting a frying pan. I've been calling 111 in tears hoping they'll send me to hospital and sedate me. Sometimes I can't even listen to my husband talk about food because it sets me off.

@Melleebacca holding in sick for an hour is seriously impressive. I'm happy if I can hold it in long enough to tie my hair up first haha. I'm glad your sickness is easing

@EmmaJennie if I feel like I won't be able to breathe again soon I get really anxious. It's horrible. Definitely speak to someone if it's negatively impacting you because HG is going to make that fear even worse. I also think it's normal to feel panic and in some ways it's the fear that pregnancy means we have no control over our bodies anymore.

@tigger2022 I hope they prescribed you meds and that they start to work soon. You'll probably find that they make you very sleepy but embrace the rest. There's no point fighting it and your body needs it. Easier said than done, I've hated being so tired and dependent but I do feel better for it now.

tigger2022 · 29/03/2022 08:01

I've been prescribed cyclizine which should hopefully be delivered today. I honestly can't wait... I've been awake since 3am vomiting :(

This is my first pregnancy. I'm usually quite sensitive to things but this is extreme!

Melleebacca · 29/03/2022 08:29

@tigger2022 I’m so sorry. This is not the club anyone wants to be in. If the cyclizine isn’t working in a couple of days, please go and get something stronger. The struggle with a first HG pregnancy is that you don’t know what the best meds for you are, or how long the sickness will persist.

@ohCARP and @LucindaE I had very few instances in which the vomiting was sudden. Usually it was a massive build up of nausea until I couldn’t do anything but vomit. I think the fact I was on the max dose of ondansetron helped in making it incredibly hard to physically vomit, although it would still happen.

Sorry to hear about the scanxiety. I had that despite having a clear NIPT report. Once you know and have experienced what can go wrong, it’s hard to believe the good is happening. I have an incredibly mobile baby, but my heart still skips a beat if I can’t remember when in the last half an hour he moved. Then he does a back flip and I wish that he would just let me sleep.
I hope the scans go well. 🤞🏻

FateHasRedesignedMost · 29/03/2022 10:36

@EmmaJennie

I don’t have a phobia of vomiting but I do get anxious every time I’m about to vomit, and panicky if I think I might vomit in public with nowhere to hide! Also get anxious about making it to the bathroom on time. And if I’m vomiting/retching a lot I feel like I can’t breathe which makes me feel a bit faint.

I’m not sure what the solution is, sorry!

FateHasRedesignedMost · 29/03/2022 10:41

I’ve got a date for my c-section: 16th May! Which is sooner than my EDD of 22nd May so the Pink Castle is closer 😊

I just hope she doesn’t come before then (my son arrived bang on 37 weeks!) as it would be a dash to the hospital, hoping the labour wasn’t too far advanced for the c-section. Every time I get a wave of strong Braxton Hicks I start worrying!

I’m sorting out my son’s old baby clothes today, ready to wash for the newborn. They’re so tiny!

Melleebacca · 29/03/2022 18:09

@FateHasRedesignedMost Yay! How lovely to have an end date. I do hope you make it there. I keep getting nervous I won’t make it to my last day of work (May 20th). All the boys in my family have come at least 10 days early, but I’m hopeful he takes after his sisters and only comes a couple of days early.

tigger2022 · 29/03/2022 18:15

Random question to those a bit more experienced than me! So far the cyclizine is not working (2 taken today, no difference so far) is it too early to worry or do I need to give it more of a chance?
