Can cats sense you're pregnant?

Our one little girl cat in particular has taken to lying on bump, which we think is sweet. In general the others are more clingy as well. Just wondered if anyone noticed their cats being more loving / protective during pregnancy?

I could literally be giving birth to triplets on the floor of the living room and my cat wouldn’t notice.

FrangipanFlower · 02/01/2022 19:54

My girl cat was like this she would purr and curl up on my bump, the boy cat couldn’t give a rats ass and still doesn’t now the baby’s here!

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 02/01/2022 19:54

My cat developed a word habit of lying horizontally across my stomach when I was pregnant and before I even idea I was pregnant, he'd not done it before and hasn't done it since, he was very insistent if I pushed him away.

Some pets - "yes"

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/01/2022 19:56

Yeah, they possibly could but....they couldn't care less.

However if you're sitting down more than usual, providing a warm surface, THAT is useful.

My cat, who i got for me, has always favoured my husband except when I was pregnant. She barely left my side and when I was labouring at home on the bed before going to hospital she stayed with me the whole time just a few feet from me. As soon as ds as born she went back to ignoring me lol

This tickled me. 99% of the other time they are generally little arse holes to be fair 😂

Absolutely MILs top boss girl cat loathed everyone and everything apart from MIL unless you were pregnant.

SIL and I were flavour of every minute if we went around when pregnant! Then back to being loathed post birth.

Haha too true. Definitely just using bump for extra warmth I'm sure! 🤣

My old cat avoided me when I was pregnant. Wouldn’t come lie on me at all. As soon as baby was born she was back to cuddles and seething whilst looking at baby 🤣 I do miss her.

Blondiebrownie6 · 02/01/2022 20:06

@Jtb5790 my girl cat is currently lying with her head on my bump and paw wrapped round the side! I said to OH she’s more clingy in this past month or so in particular and very needy (I’m just over 21 wks) I think she senses something so I’d say in response to your post :) x

Roselilly36 · 02/01/2022 20:06

Animals are an enigma aren’t they, I didn’t notice any change when
I was pregnant, but when I went into labour my dog was beside himself, wanting to be with me, crying etc, he had never been like that before.

Blondiebrownie6 · 02/01/2022 20:07

so I’d say yes**

RandomMess · 02/01/2022 20:08

Ironically MILs cat was not a diligent mother as soon as her kittens were 6 weeks they were kicked off the teat and one of the other queens would take over EVERY time!!

Trinacham · 02/01/2022 20:11

Don't think my boys realise! Having said that though, with the dogs in my family, I think only the female has shown that she possibly knows (ie smells the hormones) so maybe it is a female animal thing?

RandomMess · 02/01/2022 20:16

IME boys are generally dim in the cat world!!

silverpinecones · 02/01/2022 20:18

Awwww yes my lovely boy did that and literally wouldn't leave me alone when I was pregnant. He also really loved the baby when she arrived and would try to get in there and snuggle with us when I was feeding her etc. he'd even nudge her hand for strokes, even after she got a bit grabby!

Very sadly he got run over in the summer. We still miss him ever so much and I will never forget how amazing he was, especially during that time. I know it sounds a bit much but it was something special.

My childhood cat wasn't generally that affectionate but also was v snuggle when I was upset I remember. I think they do know stuff!

36 weeks with a boy and a girl cat here. My girl before I got pregnant spent most of her time at my neighbours! She has since rarely left the house except for the toilet and a quick mooch. My neighbour is missing her terribly but she is near me a lot now and up until recently wanted to sit on the bump. Since it's been massive she hasn't done this. The only problem is I've put up the next 2 me crib next to my bed and she now spends about 14 hours a day in it 🤦🏻‍♀️ not ideal for when baby is here.

My boy has not changed at all. He was always the clingier one and he's about the same but showing no special interest at all.

MsSquiz · 02/01/2022 20:33

One of mine becomes my shadow when I'm pregnant, constantly following me round the house, sitting as close as possible next to me without actually being on me when usually she hangs out in a completely different room to everyone!

My other cat couldn't be less interested! But is the one who has always been more interested in dd since she arrived (now 2 years old) is happy to let dd stroke her and gives her boops. First cat actively avoids dd (and most people) since she became mobile!

czycoup · 02/01/2022 20:35

My boy cat never ever wanted cuddles so we got a girl cat cos I read they were more of a lap cat (plus we wanted 2 cats anyway).

When I was pregnant with my first the boy cat slept next to me the whole time. If he couldn't sleep on me he would sleep on the bedside table. I'm pregnant again and he's the same. He literally couldn't get closer to me. When I'm not pregnant I never see him.

The girl cat likes to sit near me or on me whether I'm pregnant or not. I don't think she's more affectionate/needy.

Furmummy · 02/01/2022 21:03

I have 2 cats and definitely more snuggly and always following me. On the subject of cats what did everyone do when the baby was born? Mine are house cats and used to having every room in the house 🤦‍♀️ X

Flutterby8 · 02/01/2022 21:12

I think my cats did notice when I was pregnant in that one (male) would lay on my bump at bed time. My female cat would stand on me and knead my bump if i was laying on the sofa.

Since baby has arrived though one of my male cats (we have 2) who is normally a bit of a d*ck has been so different personality wise. He has become so affectionate, wanting attention, purring (which is very rare), sitting on laps.
None of them are that bothered by baby. Theyre more miffed that theyre shut out of the bedroom overnight.

Trinacham · 02/01/2022 21:30

Same dilemma here! Our boys sleep in our bedroom with us at the mo. In 4 weeks that will have to change 😬 thinking we'll buy them more beds so they have more choice of where to sleep as don't want to upset them!
Blondiebrownie6 · 02/01/2022 21:30

I was thinking this to @Furmummy ! Ours will come up to our room early hours of the morning but will need to keep her out the bedroom altogether. She likes her peace though so I wonder if she’ll just naturally go to a quieter spot to sleep undisturbed lol! You hear of so many cats not adapting and I’m Just praying she does and it all works out!
