6 week scan, heartbeat seen but couldn’t take measurements?

Hi all,

I had an early scan at my local EPU the other day due to spotting I had earlier in the week.

The sonographer was great overall and managed to find the baby and it’s tiny heartbeat using just an abdominal scan.

She did say though that it was so tiny that the machine wouldn’t even let her take measurements?

She said that all looks great and she predicting me a few days behind 6 weeks just because she couldn’t take measurements?

Is this normal? Should I be concerned? She and the nurses didn’t seem concerned and proceeded to tell me that it was roughly the size of a baked bean it h a heartbeat.

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

It sounds great, exactly as she said.

There’s a heartbeat. They’re meant to be tiny at that stage.

CountryGirl189 · 19/12/2021 21:49

Thanks @Moancup

I think my question is more, why do other people get given measurements at 6 weeks but I was told they couldn’t get one?

The mind boggles!

I’m 37 weeks and had 2 early scans with this one as I was unsure on dates and had spotting. I was roughly 6 weeks at my first early scan and the sonographer could just about make out a heartbeat but said they were small so difficult to measure, but nothing that they wouldn’t expect. Repeated the scan 2 weeks later and everything was all good. Sounds pretty normal to me based on my experience 😊

Thank you @livinthedream1995

These little tinies don’t half make you worry!

Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile. Early pregnancy can be so stressful! I had early scans in both my pregnancies approx 6 weeks & they were internal scans rather than abdominal - sounds as though it might just be because they did an abdominal scan that it was hard to get measurements as they're better when the baby is slightly bigger (maybe around 8 weeks??). Easily said but try not to worry, if the sonographer was happy all was normal and you saw a heartbeat that's the best outcome.

Thanks *@Moancup*

Possibly other people had a transvaginal scan which is much easier to 'see' the baby with at this gestation.
AwkwardPaws27 · 19/12/2021 23:51

All my early scans have been transvaginal. I expect the difficulty measuring is due to it being abdominal. A heartbeat is a great sign.

Holskey · 20/12/2021 00:08

I'm surprised they scanned you abdominally, and as others have said, they can see the baby much clearer in the early days when they scan transvaginally. They obviously weren't concerned enough to take measurements. The heartbeat is a great sign. Congratulations! 😊

@CountryGirl189

Don’t they just!! Best of luck and have a lovely Christmas x

Porridgeislife · 20/12/2021 12:39

Scans that early are usually done transvaginally. To see a heart beat abdominally at 6 weeks is great news. Congratulations!

CountryGirl189 · 20/12/2021 13:15

Thank you all for reassuring me 😊

I too was surprised they only did an abdominal scan - she said if she couldn’t see anything then she’d do a trans vaginas, but she found it pretty quickly and said there was no need for one 🤔

Have lovely Christmasses all 🎄

*transvaginal! How embarrassing 😳

Trans vaginas 🤣🤣🤣 I didn't even notice until I read your correction.

CountryGirl189 · 20/12/2021 15:26

Won’t lie, I had a small giggle to myself when I noticed 😂

The dates on my early scan were very out and just made me more worried, but by my 12 week scan the baby measured as it should. 25 weeks now and all seeming fine. It’s hard to get accurate results when baby is that teeny.

strawberrysummer19 · 20/12/2021 16:17

I just want to add that at my 6+4 scan I measured 6+3 and at my 8wks I was measuring 7+1 and she said I mustn't worry it's so tiny at this time and it's very difficult to measure accurately and just a slight slip of her hand would change the measurements so I'm assuming as you were only 6weeks this may have been why
My nurse was adamant I mustn't worry about measuring small and the fact there was a heartbeat was very good
And the next scan I was worried measuring so behind but again she said if everything is growing then it means it's progressing
My next scan is tomorrow! So I'm hoping the measurements are more close to what I am
I hope this has given some reassurance

Hope478 · 20/12/2021 16:43

They couldn't find a heartbeat at my scan until baby was 7 weeks! You've done great just seeing the heartbeat, don't worry about measurements yet :) x

CountryGirl189 · 20/12/2021 16:46

Thanks all!

I am constantly worried as I haven’t had super strong symptoms either! And those I have had seem to be dwindling 😬

Has anyone else found this? Was there a certain week where everything just seemed to hit at once?

@CountryGirl189 You’ve still got time. I told my IVF consultant at my early pregnancy scan at 7w4d that so far I’d found pregnancy quite easy (I had!)

He smiled gently and said he finds that things tend to kick in around Week 8. By the end of week 8 I was on Cyclizine as I couldn’t function for nausea and am still really struggling at 11w, feeling poorly for large chunks of the day.

For me it was just under 8 weeks. My symptoms hit me like a bus, and I was hospitalised at just over 9 weeks for IV fluids and anti sickness meds
CountryGirl189 · 20/12/2021 17:20

@Porridgeislife @Derbee so essentially I should enjoy this time as much as possible 😅😅

Wish I could just relax, but I’m concerned about everything and driving myself mad!

Georgy12 · 20/12/2021 17:26

Don't worry hon it's very unusual to be able to take any measurements at this stage, congratulations xx

Derbee · 21/12/2021 07:44

@CountryGirl189 yes, try and enjoy it! Although I know that’s pretty much impossible. Early pregnancy is a stressful waiting game. Nothing is in your control, and you’re just a passive observer to a certain degree!… hope your pregnancy progresses well.

HW1989 · 22/12/2021 10:30

I was exactly the same and worried about a lack of symptoms. Mine started around 8/9 weeks and then the nausea and headaches were horrible! And even if you don’t get any, that’s perfectly normal also. Harder said than done I know (I still worry constantly) but try not to worry!

CountryGirl189 · 23/12/2021 15:10

Thank you @HW1989 - I feel like I had a few days last week where I felt really under the weather, but then since we’ve had the scan, I’ve barely had any symptoms!

Keep waking up each morning thinking it’ll hit me, but nothing!

Trying to keep positive in knowing that we’ve seen the heartbeat so that must mean something 💕
