6 week scan, heartbeat seen but couldn’t take measurements?

Hi all,

I had an early scan at my local EPU the other day due to spotting I had earlier in the week.

The sonographer was great overall and managed to find the baby and it’s tiny heartbeat using just an abdominal scan.

She did say though that it was so tiny that the machine wouldn’t even let her take measurements?

She said that all looks great and she predicting me a few days behind 6 weeks just because she couldn’t take measurements?

Is this normal? Should I be concerned? She and the nurses didn’t seem concerned and proceeded to tell me that it was roughly the size of a baked bean it h a heartbeat.

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

Just going to try and keep this thread updated as I know it’s really frustrating when you don’t see an outcome!

All my symptoms have completely subsided now and I am beside myself with worry, although I think mentally I have detached from this pregnancy now as I have a gut feeling it isn’t going to be a good outcome.

Not been able to contact anyone as my GP practice and EPU have been closed over Christmas, but with my symptoms having been gone for over a week now, I think I’m just delaying the inevitable, so will call them tomorrow (annoyingly, I’m at a wedding and couldn’t think of anything worse at this moment in time!)

Will keep the thread updated as and when things happen 😊

@CountryGirl189 sorry to hear how you are feeling and it's lovely you've come back to update. The timing is terrible isn't it but I hope you get some answers very soon.

I don't want to get your hopes up but I've definitely seen positive outcomes out of these situations and my update to my last reply is that at my 9wk scan the measurements had caught up from almost measuring a week behind. I know our dates are different but it shows it can happen.

Also the loss of symptoms doesn't always necessarily mean a bad outcome - and symptoms doesn't always a pregnancy is progressing sadly in some cases so until you have that scan, that will be your only reassurance.
I look forward to your update and remember worrying won't change the outcome ( I tell myself this alllll the time!) I'm having no more early scans until my 12week one now.

X

Thank you @strawberrysummer19 - I really appreciate your reply!

I’m trying to stay hopefully, but strangely the midwife called this morning for my booking appointment and I told her of my worries and she’s having me in for urgent bloods tomorrow to see if my HCG is decreasing, but I’ve definitely prepped myself for the worst - something just seems off!

I just find it odd that a couple of days after the scan, all my symptoms let us and have been getting less and less since 🤔

But we’ll see and I will of course keep this updated x

@CountryGirl189 I've learnt not to argue with a woman who has a gut feeling about her own body, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you x

CountryGirl189 · 03/01/2022 16:41

Latest update:

Got the HCG back: at six-ish weekend I was at 20,100 and at eight-ish weeks it’s only gone up to 94,000 so I’m not sure how to interpret that as it seems a v.slow rise in two weeks.

The EPU didn’t know either and so going for another scan on Thursday!

Hcg doesn't continue to double though. I've no idea what it should be now based on what it was was, but your level now isn't low. Why did they wait 2 weeks to check levels again?! Why didn't they just scan you instead because that would have cleared everything up? I'll keep my fingers crossed that your scan gives you happy answers.

CountryGirl189 · 03/01/2022 18:37

@Holskey honestly, your guess is as good as mine and I’ve been an absolutely anxious wreck because they’ve been absolutely rubbish if I’m being completely honest!

EPU refused to scan me, so I told the midwife I’d had a loss of symptoms so she requested a single HCG reading (?!) to see if I was ‘still pregnant’

Called EPU yesterday and they had no idea what my level should be for how many weeks I was - couldn’t tell me anything and said I’d have to wait until my 12 week scan.

They then called back a few minutes later to say that the nurse in charge has said I should come in for a scan and Thursday is the earliest they could get me in.

I’m losing my mind over here!

Just go and have a private scan- this is mental.

It costs about £70- priceless for peace of mind. If anything is amiss- they will be able to refer you to EPU.

CountryGirl189 · 03/01/2022 18:47

@Suprima - I’ve tried and all the clinics round me are fully booked! Nothing until Friday, so I may as well go Thursday now!

Will 100% be writing a complaint to the hospital, whether the baby is okay or not!

Cakecakecheese · 03/01/2022 18:47

Yeah I agree wit Suprima and wouldn't be waiting for a 12 week scan so a private scan is a good idea. I have everything crossed for you.

Cakecakecheese · 03/01/2022 18:49

Oops sorry just seen your update. Yes definitely complain, it's a stressful enough time and this has made it a lot worse.

CountryGirl189 · 03/01/2022 19:06

@Cakecakecheese I definitely will!

If they’d just scanned me in the first place instead of doing my HCG, I wouldn’t now be stressing about the results! 😅

I obviously have to round off this story for anyone who reads in the future and I’m pleased to say that baby is in there shuffling around and is measuring right on 9 weeks which is what I am tomorrow!

So all I can take from this is: Google is not your friend 😬

And with that, I am going to distance myself from it! 😂

@CountryGirl189 yay sooo happy for you! What an anxious time - you must be so relieved x

Holskey · 06/01/2022 17:38

@CountryGirl189 glad your scan went well 🥰 All the best for the rest of your pregnancy!
