How accurate is gender at 16week ultrasound scan?

Hello,

During a scan at 16weeks to the day, Dr advised that "it's looking like a little girl". It was 14w6D from start of last period but at 12w 8days was added to gestation. Most importantly baby looks healthy so far.

Just wondering how accurate the gender call is? I've heard of people been told wrong gender so just curious if anyone has had any relevant experience they could share.

🤦‍♀️

Strangevipers · 08/12/2021 21:22

I'd be surprised if you have a boy

Alfixn · 08/12/2021 21:25

This was partially why i didn't find out the sex. You will always have that doubt until they're actually born!

Well, plus I like surprises.

That's not much help, sorry

Wildrobin · 08/12/2021 21:27

Our midwife was very confident at 13 weeks but said that was unusual and that she wouldn’t normally say. 20 week scan confirmed a boy so we’ll be surprised if it ends up a girl! I’d go by how confident the sonographer is on the whole

Wildrobin · 08/12/2021 21:27

I meant our sonographer not midwife!

Yeah tbh sometimes I wish we didn't find out until 20weeks.

I know people get very touchy about gender discussions, but I think it's natural to be curious.

It’s sex, not gender, OP.

PearsandPartridge · 08/12/2021 22:49

@Warmduscher

It’s sex, not gender, OP.

It's whatever she wants to call it.

My 16w scan was spot on, OP. He was very obviously a little boy 💙 😉 I understand it's easier to mistake boys for girls when they decide to hide their little manhood, but it's not common at all. Congratulations 🥳

PiesNotGuys · 08/12/2021 22:55

It is not easy to tell.

Even when you look directly at babies at around this gestation without a uterus in the way, it’s not easy to tell. I’ve tried, as have the midwives and one doctor I’ve met, and we all had to go with best guesses.

Warmduscher · 08/12/2021 22:57

It's whatever she wants to call it.

No, they are two completely different things. It’s impossible to know the gender of a baby because they don’t have one. They do have a biological sex, however.

Just seeking experiences, not a gender/ sex debate.

And I’m not debating - just telling you a baby doesn’t have a gender.

NewlyGranny · 08/12/2021 23:41

Warmduscher, consider OP may be in the US where sex and gender are used more or less interchangeably. All those "gender reveal" reels don't help, either!

NewlyGranny · 08/12/2021 23:44

I was always a "Let's be surprised!" person, but lots of people prefer to know in advance. The risk I see is shock or even disappointment if the scan was called wrong, but I don't that happens often these days!

Perhaps yours doesn't - but mine does. A gender determined by the sex if you will.

I won't be raising a female as a boy, so it's a moot point really.

Can't even say gender of a baby without offending someone these days Confused Op 16 weeks they can usually tell if the baby is letting them see.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 09/12/2021 02:28

Get the blood test if you want to know that badly.

Grumpasaurus · 09/12/2021 13:23

People are wild on here!

Ours was accurate at 16 weeks- boy!

QueenLagertha · 09/12/2021 15:11

A high chance that it is a girl OP but just confirm at your anomaly scan.

Ppl who drone on about sex vs gender at every opportunity are tedious 😴

Teaandcrumpets95 · 09/12/2021 18:38

I had an early sex scan at 16 weeks 5 days and from my 20 week scan a few days ago my baby boy is still very obviously a boy 😅😊 x

Warmduscher · 09/12/2021 20:14

Perhaps yours doesn't - but mine does. A gender determined by the sex if you will.

Gender is the name given to the stereotypes imposed by society on girls and boys and which many people believe restrict children, especially girls, to a narrow set of expected behaviours and characteristics. But if that’s what you’re aiming for, go for it.

CherryRedDMs · 09/12/2021 20:29

Both mine were accurate at 12w (we had already had NIPT and knew the sex so the sonographer had a guess).

BabyOnBoard90 · 09/12/2021 20:58

@warmduscher

which many people believe restrict children
People believe in lots of strange notions, but thankfully I have discernment not to adopt every social ideology that people try to assert.

But if that’s what you’re aiming for, go for it.

Certainly is what I aim for. Hoping my children don't try and fight their biology.

Furthermore, if gender is supposedly a social construct, that renders everything after cis-men/women redundant.

Which you're reinforcing by your whole definition of gender. Ffs people always used sex/gender interchangeably until a few years ago when all this shite came about.
Warmduscher · 09/12/2021 21:06

There’s so much to unpick in your post I don’t know really where to start but I have to ask - what do you mean by “cis”? Just that it’s a term that a lot of women don’t use because of the ridiculous baggage it comes with, but considering you don’t seem to know what gender means, I’m wondering if you might have misunderstood “cis” also.
