How accurate is gender at 16week ultrasound scan?

Hello,

During a scan at 16weeks to the day, Dr advised that "it's looking like a little girl". It was 14w6D from start of last period but at 12w 8days was added to gestation. Most importantly baby looks healthy so far.

Just wondering how accurate the gender call is? I've heard of people been told wrong gender so just curious if anyone has had any relevant experience they could share.

@FrownedUpon

Pointless thread. How will other peoples experiences help you? You get what you get.

Also, yes it’s sex, not gender.

It provides an anecdotal gauge of the level of accuracy they have experienced from having early scans.

I thought that was obvious.

And no, sex = gender.

That's why we have gender reveals. Confused

Came on to see how many posts there was before the classic MN response of ‘its sex not gender’ *eyeroll’ - these people always seem to scan threads and salivating at the chance to come out with this line

I think with Girl Op the guess can still be 50/50, i think Boy would definitely be more accurate at this stage.

Congrats on your pregnancy, hope everything goes well

ReeseWitherfork · 10/12/2021 13:30

Boys are more likely to be accurate.

At my 16 and 18 week scans they were prepared to confirm a sex; sonographer said probably girls but we're on penis lookout as apparently then can hide them! I'll come back and let you know when they're finally happy to call it.

Sorry I meant they WERENT prepared to confirm a sex.

I always thought it was generally called a ‘gender reveal’ because of people being weirdly uncomfortable saying the word sex Grin

Anecdotally I’ve heard it’s unlikely to be told you’re having a boy and for it to be a girl, but not uncommon the other way around. Good luck with the 20 week scan!

I'd recommend anyone politely decline a 'sex reveal' party!

(Although I'd probably recommend it with gender reveals too)

LoveLifeLaugh93 · 10/12/2021 14:32

Very insightful responses (apart from those pushing their ideals on others when a simple question was asked). I knew someone who had a gender confirmed at 20 weeks as girl and they found in their 30+ week scan it was actually a boy! Good luck OP!

I wasn’t sure you were confused about the meaning of the word gender, but now I’m certain you are.
BabyOnBoard90 · 10/12/2021 17:24

Not sure how I'm going to sleep tonight knowing a stranger on the Internet disagrees with my use of the word 'gender' 😟

I think at 16 weeks it’s really obvious most times and the accuracy is quite high if they’ve got a good view. My sonographers were able to tell the sex of both my boys at 14 weeks.

Is there any particular reason you want a boy, OP?

Maybe something you should have considered when you asked for opinions from strangers on the internet …

Conventional reasons people have gender preferences but my priority is that baby is fit and healthy.

Girl or boy, I will love them and do my best.

It was you who used the word gender when what you meant was sex. You can’t blame anyone else for that.

BabyOnBoard90 · 11/12/2021 01:18

@Warmduscher it was you tried to apply definition without understanding certain words are interchangeable synonyms under a specific context.

They’re not synonyms! Of they were, why is it that people say they’ve changed

Warmduscher · 11/12/2021 09:37

… gender and not sex?

Also just because you use them as if they are synonyms doesn’t make that so.

You can say it a thousand times, but still doesn't make it any more true unfortunately x

At my 16 week gender scan sonographer was certain we were having a girl and we definitely have a daughter!

When the f can't we say gender when we're identifying genitals absolute bs hahaha it's the child's choice if they'd rather identify as the other gender themselves which personally is fine with me but I definitely wouldn't use sex instead of gender just incase of this. Pathetic

Good luck with your gender scan op!

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 11/12/2021 10:31

@Warmduscher

* scan...

I know people do use some words interchangeably and ordinarily that doesn’t cause a problem.
Well in that case it was a moot point after all. Discussion over.

It’s shame you cherry-picked this sentence from my post, ignoring why people using the word gender when they mean sex is a problem for women.

And wouldn’t it be great if the discussion was over? If people used the word sex when they meant the biology of their unborn child and gender when they meant the stereotypes imposed upon their child by society, the discussion would be over sooner rather than later.

You’re not wrong It’s a shame though that you perceive that it’s your duty to educate other people on this topic to the extent that your entirely legitimate discussion comes across as nit picking and irritating.

Pick your audience perhaps?
Or start your own thread

Women don’t know what their unborn child’s future holds in most aspects of their life gender and sexual orientation / identification being one of those. You are correct in that assertion, however many women will always want to know whether they hare having a girl or a boy and frame that enquiry in terms of gender rather than sex. It’s not just a question of semantics as you say but by persisting in educating people to these facts in a thread like this you will mostly just end up of being accused of pissing on peoples chips.

Warmduscher · 11/12/2021 10:54

I’d be inclined to agree with you if the OP hadn’t been so keen to reply to all my posts.
