How accurate is gender at 16week ultrasound scan?

Hello,

During a scan at 16weeks to the day, Dr advised that "it's looking like a little girl". It was 14w6D from start of last period but at 12w 8days was added to gestation. Most importantly baby looks healthy so far.

Just wondering how accurate the gender call is? I've heard of people been told wrong gender so just curious if anyone has had any relevant experience they could share.

Beautiful response OP.

Also, I've had 4 children, had early gender scans around the 16 week mark with each of them, the sonographer was correct each time Smile

Locomelon · 09/12/2021 21:10

Oh bore off @Warmduscher

OP, I'd say pretty accurate! But don't buy any pink until it's confirmed at the anomaly scan. Congrats!

Warmduscher · 09/12/2021 21:13

Oh bore off @Warmduscher**

I’m in awe of the depth and intelligence of your response Hmm

Honey2 · 09/12/2021 21:30

Oh my god the poor OP only asked a simple question!!

As has been said if It’s a boy and you see a Willy then it’s a pretty sure thing in my experience (I have 3 boys) it’s true though that if you don’t see a willy that’s not a guarantee it’s a girl… it can be hiding!

BabyOnBoard90 · 09/12/2021 22:16

@Warmduscher

There’s so much to unpick in your post I don’t know really where to start but I have to ask - what do you mean by “cis”? Just that it’s a term that a lot of women don’t use because of the ridiculous baggage it comes with, but considering you don’t seem to know what gender means, I’m wondering if you might have misunderstood “cis” also.
It's not that complex of a concept, but you seem to feel empowered by evangelically pontificating your ideals, so sure whatever you say.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the responses. I was under illusion first child would be a boy, but a girl would be a blessing of equal measure.

So you don’t know what “cis” means? That’s fine.

NatriumChloride · 09/12/2021 23:07

You were under the illusion the first child would be a boy? Why?

BabyOnBoard90 · 09/12/2021 23:13

@NatriumChloride A false gut feeling.

@Warmduscher if that's the hill you want to die on, ok

Congratulations on your pregnancy OP!

I’m not going to join in the debate about sex vs gender, it’s not what you asked and people are being deliberately pedantic.

My 16 week scan was correct, but I think you’re right in saying they sometimes make mistakes. Ask them to check at your 20 week scan, it’s much rarer to be wrong then Smile

Skysblue · 09/12/2021 23:25

It depends what the position the baby is in.

If you see a massive willy, as we did, then you can be confident you’re having a boy.

If baby has legs crossed and/or they can’t see anything much around the groin area, they can say they think it’s a girl, but they won’t be as confident as if they’d seen the willy.

No, it’s the factual definition I want to stick to.

Deisogn · 09/12/2021 23:40

We found out both times at 12 weeks and both were accurate but I was high risk so the scans were done by a doctor. Congrats, OP!

A fact based on a your personal view which aims to displace a purported social construct for another.

Ironically you starred by asserting a definition that isn't even universal. Quite rich

Sex isn’t a social construct! Grin
BabyOnBoard90 · 10/12/2021 09:03

@Warmduscher

Of course it's not, but it is interchangeable with gender in certain contexts which you don't seem grasp Hmm.

I know people do use some words interchangeably and ordinarily that doesn’t cause a problem. People can always ask if the meaning isn’t clear.

But when you have men saying they’ve changed their gender so they are now the opposite sex and are therefore entitled to use any facilities that are specifically set aside in law for women only, it becomes a problem for women who want to keep those spaces single sex. Not all, I admit - some women are more than happy to open up single sex hospital wards, changing rooms, women’s prisons, women’s refuges, etc to men. But many other women feel this has a negative effect on women and that’s why we challenge the conflation of sex and gender at every opportunity and will continue to do so, as it’s the thin end of the wedge.

GemmaRuby · 10/12/2021 09:19

To answer your actual question, it’s possible for a boy to be mistaken for a girl, depending on the position they’re in for the scan - they could be hiding their bits.

Much less likely for a girl to be mistaken for a boy.

It’s probably correct but you’ll have more certainty after your 20wk scan.

Also agree that unborn babies can have a presumed gender. Very few people say oh we’re having a biological female but we’re waiting to see which gender she chooses.

I'm sure that's an interesting debate, but entirely off-topic for a thread about fetal scan...

I know people do use some words interchangeably and ordinarily that doesn’t cause a problem.
Well in that case it was a moot point after all. Discussion over. 😂

Thanks for all the other responses. Apologies for letting discussion get derailed.

We have the 20week scan in 5days, so I'll know for sure. Excited and anxious, but most of all hopeful it is healthy.

Good luck with the scan OP Smile

Definitely agree that some people adhere rigidly to the stereotypes of gender. But it’s when people use the words interchangeably that it becomes a problem. No-one can guess an unborn baby’s gender, as it describes a stereotypical way in which males and females are expected by some people to present.

I think we should all be opposed to that tbh.

It’s shame you cherry-picked this sentence from my post, ignoring why people using the word gender when they mean sex is a problem for women.

And wouldn’t it be great if the discussion was over? If people used the word sex when they meant the biology of their unborn child and gender when they meant the stereotypes imposed upon their child by society, the discussion would be over sooner rather than later.

FrownedUpon · 10/12/2021 10:12

Pointless thread. How will other peoples experiences help you? You get what you get.

Also, yes it’s sex, not gender.

Epli · 10/12/2021 11:34

Different providers claim different accuracy - some close to 99% however I think I saw also the number 85% as a accuracy for sexing scan if the result was a girl. If the sex is determined based on a blood test (this is part of a NIPT if you get one) is ~99%.

If one is trying to apply universal definitions sure 😂
