Just wondering about people’s experience. I am 14 weeks and started scrolling through the sites looking at prams and cots etc .. I had no intention of buying yet but it’s hard to not get carried away and when sales are on. Just wondering how early did you order those bigger items? Thanks

Congratulations!
Think we ordered the pram at about 5 months pregnant when it was on a good deal! Everything else was little bits along the way but I don't think I got anything before about 4 months. Maybe use the time to research what items you'd like there are so many prams, next to me cots, car seats etc to choose from ☺️

Furmummy · 23/11/2021 19:54

@PollyRae16 thank you, yes that’s what I was thinking. There are so many things to look at, so a few months of research is probably a good idea xx

I haven't bought any big items, lucky to have been gifted 2nd hand from friends and family who've had babies in the last couple of years.
Feels good to be saving on buying items from new, and saving money!

zeena83 · 23/11/2021 20:10

Eek, we only started ordering at 32 weeks and we felt a bit stressed to be honest. Ideally would have made a start a little sooner but was having renovation done at home. Most is done now, just pram and car seat to go and a few more clothes. Plus I really need to make a start on my hospital bag Confused

PiesNotGuys · 23/11/2021 20:14

Congratulations!

I didn’t buy any big items until baby had been born and I knew what I’d need/what the baby would like.

Bought one babygro at 24 weeks but held back on anything else until about 36-38 weeks, when got nappies, toiletries and more clothes.

Still ended up at the shops a few days after baby was born for stuff I hadn’t thought of at all but nevermind.

Furmummy · 23/11/2021 20:21

@SouthwestSis I wish I had that luxury, I am an old first mum and all my friends had their babies about ten years ago, but at same time shopping for a baby I didn’t think I could have is quite an exciting thought and very special

@zeena83 wow you have had a lot going on though if renovating while pregnant … ooooo not long and am sure you will get those things quickly xx

@PiesNotGuys thank you! That’s a good idea as then you know what you want. It’s like when I moved house, I rushed to buy before moving abs regretted most my purchases once in there!

I’m 12 weeks and just bought buggy and carrycot as the Black Friday deals were so good for what we were after. I literally got 45% off the original price. The original prices weren’t fake either as I’ve been keeping an eye on price since I found out I was pregnant (on various sites) and it honestly was too much of a steal to lose!!

Furmummy · 23/11/2021 20:37

@CurryandSnuggle yes I can see why you have as it’s so tempting … that’s partly why I posted as seen some great deals and it’s hard to not press the buy button! X

@Furmummy do it if it’s going to save you £££ 🙂

Juanbablo · 23/11/2021 20:44

With my first I didn't buy anything until after the birth. Won't go into details.

My other two were born in March and I started buying things after Christmas so I guess 30ish weeks.

HeyFloof · 23/11/2021 20:46

DS1 - about 20ish weeks.
DS2 - Died at 21+4 so was glad I hadn't bought anything.
14 weeks pregnant and won't buy anything any time soon. Will wash a few baby grows if I get past 36ish weeks.

ladycarlotta · 23/11/2021 20:48

the thing is, there will always be other sales. I know it's easy to get Black Friday FOMO but there'll be the January sales along in a twinkling, and then probably another round in the spring. Don't get suckered. I speak from experience!

I couldn't help myself and bought a few bits after my 12 week scan but just things that caught my eye in charity shops etc. I ended up buying most of the big things very close to the wire, but that was partly because we moved into a new house about 6 weeks before the baby was born.

I do agree though that it's worth holding back and just waiting to see what will suit you and baby. They're all so different and a 'must buy' for some families gathers dust in others. Newborns don't need much really, so you are not lax to just pick stuff up as you go along, it'll probably save you tonnes of money.

And congratulations! Lovely that you have this long-awaited baby to plan for.

PenelopeVonDelius · 23/11/2021 20:51

Ah congrats! Such an exciting time.

I held off till after my 20 week scan. I remember the first thing I bought (a whinny the poo baby grow set from Tesco - such glamour Grin). Dh was giving me the side eye the whole time as if I was being a total nut for buying so early Confused. Weirdo.

I think I'd hold off on big things like pram and cot for now, as you have to store them and also, you may chop and change your mind about what you want over the next few months.

CurryandSnuggle · 23/11/2021 20:55

Agree with @ladycarlotta about babies not needing much! I don’t think it’s wrong to buy now if it’s something you’ve researched and will use though. Like, we need a buggy and I knew what I want as first time round I got a buggy that was awful for us so had a checklist of what I want in a buggy this time: lightweight, can be used from newborn but also as a stroller, easy and compact fold, and all-terrain.

But I wouldn’t get a million and one things that sound good only to find you didn’t really need them e.g breast pumps, bottle warmers etc. I’d suggest waiting to see what you need when the baby is born in this case.

OinkPinkPonk · 23/11/2021 20:58

I ordered my pram at 16 weeks when there was a sale on.
Don't miss out on a pram sale!

sittingdownb · 23/11/2021 21:03

I'd say it depends whether you are superstitious or not. With DC1 I purchased a few clothes in the January sales about 15 weeks pregnant, got bad news at 20 week scan and I felt like I'd jinxed it but buying the clothes. I know other people are able to disconnect the two and wouldn't feel guilty about buying things.

Subsequent DC I'v been at least 35 weeks to even start. Big items such as car seat 38/39 weeks. You can get pretty much everything the same or next day.

Cartref30 · 23/11/2021 21:08

@CurryandSnuggle out of interest which buggy ticked all of those boxes?!

I’m planning on waiting until at least after 20 weeks then will go slow and steady using marketplace for a lot hopefully

CurryandSnuggle · 23/11/2021 21:11

@Cartref30 I got the baby jogger city mini gt2 (all terrain) with carrycot.

Cost means a lot to me as we can’t afford £1000 for a pram so this was a very good option within a reasonable price for us.

Will then buy a compatible car seat and adapter to make it a travel system 🙂 probably a maxi-cosi

Cartref30 · 23/11/2021 21:18

@CurryandSnuggle brilliant thank you I will have a look as your list is the same as mine! Thank you

CurryandSnuggle · 23/11/2021 21:26

@Cartref30 I think the only box it doesn’t tick as well as some brands is the compact fold but luckily we have a big car boot. It’s reasonably compact but there are some that pack tiny. It is pretty lightweight though, folds with one hand and all-terrain (major important to me as I want to walk in countryside). It’s good for the price. Here’s a pretty balanced review: www.madeformums.com/reviews/baby-jogger-city-mini-gt2-pushchair-review/

sageandbasil · 23/11/2021 22:46

Think we ordered our pram at 20 weeks, same with the cot etc. I kinda wish we had waited cos it's just been hanging around the house for months on end

sageandbasil · 23/11/2021 22:46

However it is Black Friday so if there's a good sale I'd get it now

Thinking2041 · 23/11/2021 23:20

After 20wk scan

toadstool32 · 24/11/2021 00:54

I waited to reach 24week viability
