“Sir” as a grandfather name?

My dad is a bit eccentric. I've asked my parents to choose what they want to be called as grandparents (e.g nanny, grandad, granny etc.). My dad has chosen "Sir". Not as a joke, he's deadly serious. Is this a bit weird? Anyone heard this before as a grandfather title?

That is very weird.

vanillaskies · 20/11/2021 21:21

That's very strange... we went for Pops for my dad. It was sweet and a bit different!

LawnFever · 20/11/2021 21:21

Absolutely crackers, no that’s a ridiculous idea!

WhatHoMarjorie · 20/11/2021 21:21

very weird. does he have a very high opinion of himself and like people to bow and scrape?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/11/2021 21:22

Under no circumstances would my child call my father or father in law 'sir'

LawnFever · 20/11/2021 21:22

One of mine was Gramps, if you wanted something a bit different

Mumdiva99 · 20/11/2021 21:22

Whatever he asks the kids will end up choosing their own name.

Evianontoast · 20/11/2021 21:22

@WhatHoMarjorie yup... how did you know ;)

Okay, I'm glad it's not just me that thinks it's absolutely ridiculous. Thought it might be some traditional name I'd never heard of!

We have a grandfather sir said with a wink, and the kids are happy with that

oviraptor21 · 20/11/2021 21:23

Never in a month of Sundays would be my response.

Harlequin1088 · 20/11/2021 21:23

Sorry, is your Dad Victorian, per chance? Is he perhaps going to stride about the house permanently armed with a cane? Is he going to take great care to ensure his grandchildren are utterly terrified of him?

No?

Then don't have the poor kid calling him "Sir". How fucking ridiculous.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/11/2021 21:24

Sir, yes Sir!

🤣
it's fucking weird

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/11/2021 21:24

I'm not sure I'd want that in my DC's lives.

I loved my gramps very much and although he was a very proper man, he was never aloof.

MeredithGreyishblue · 20/11/2021 21:24

Not unless he was in a Dickens. Or was a bit of a twat, no.

thisplaceisweird · 20/11/2021 21:25

Nooooooo way

Agree to it then get your kids to call him by his first name, or even better a nickname

BitterTits · 20/11/2021 21:26

That's very odd.

MichelleScarn · 20/11/2021 21:27

Does he call you GIRL! And plan to call your child, CHILD! in a loud Victorianesque tone.
I'm assuming Grand-Pater wasn't formal enough?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 20/11/2021 21:27

Depends on your relationship with your dad, but I'd tell him no. 'Sir' implies a distant, authoritative, unloving relationship, and if that's what he wants he doesn't get to pick his name.

It also sounds ridiculous. "I'm going to Sir and Granny's house" "Bye-bye Sir!" "Sir, read me a story" Hmm

Evianontoast · 20/11/2021 21:28

Haha okay, I'm so glad people have agreed, I thought I was being a bit unreasonable when I told him I was on the fence about it. Victorian is absolutely right, it's such a weird power trip!

Sorry my Latin is awful, should be Avus !

DerbyshireMama · 20/11/2021 21:30

Fuck no

MyCatHatesWhiskas · 20/11/2021 21:34

Well, if you did go with that, be assured your DCs may change it of their own accord. Possibly outing but my DPs were to be known as Granny and Grandad (their choice, DM wanted DF to be Grandpa but he refused). DC2 currently has Grandad down as Rah-rah Grin

girafferafferaffe · 20/11/2021 21:35

I'd laugh in his face tbh

blindmansbluff · 20/11/2021 21:36

Haha that is totally ludicrous!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/11/2021 21:36

tbh my youngest 2 often call me "Your Majesty" while curtseying or stand at attention, salute and say "XYZ reporting for duty".🤣🤣
It's allquite hilarious because DS1 & DS3 started doing the first one and the younger ones copied it and DS6 came up with the second one.
Makes me laugh every time!
