“Sir” as a grandfather name?

My dad is a bit eccentric. I've asked my parents to choose what they want to be called as grandparents (e.g nanny, grandad, granny etc.). My dad has chosen "Sir". Not as a joke, he's deadly serious. Is this a bit weird? Anyone heard this before as a grandfather title?

i was referred to as the child by my parents, esp when talking to my older siblings.
i felt at the time that it was not fair, as they were children too, though older.
then i happened to see an old film, with family scene, where exact same thing happened; mother came in and said to teenage daughter, where's the child. it was a very naturalistic film of ordinary home life at the time, almost a documentary. made me feel better.

but i agree, for a grandfather to demand to be called sir is not on.
wouldn't work anyway. children will decide for themselves. don't worry.

Haha that's ridiculous.
My DH dad had no preference really and has become Grandad Ratbag. I really hope your dad becomes something similar.

My BIL is affectionately known as Mr **. It was just a flippant joke but many years later it works. that said 'sir' isn't jokey

ThisBear · 20/11/2021 21:42

Can you edge him towards grandpapa? It still has a hint of Victoriana about it, but a vast improvement on sir.

Dilbertian · 20/11/2021 21:42

We just had 2 x parents' evenings, when both of our 2ry school dc greeted every male teacher with "Hello, Sir".

Sir is not by any stretch of the imagination a name for a grandfather.

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 20/11/2021 21:45

Personally I'd prefer 'You Old Git'. But to each his own, I guess Confused

MollyBloomYes · 20/11/2021 21:47

Bloody hell my dad said he'd be Sir every time the topic came up during my first pregnancy. Never deviated. Always absolutely a joke. He's Grandpa officially, Grandper according to one child's pronunciation and copied by their sibling and one cousin calls him something so outing i daren't write it here. He revels in it all because he adores his grandchildren. To be called Sir seriously is batshit, does he actually want a relationship with his grandchild or is this his way of saying he'd rather not?

AdoraBell · 20/11/2021 21:48

WTF? I would suggest Oi You in this case.

Zing that’s hilarious 🤣🤣

PingedPotato · 20/11/2021 21:52

Is he actually a Sir? Has he been Knighted? If not tell him when he's a Knight he can be called sir.

Numbersarefun · 20/11/2021 21:52

I think my DH called his Grandad, Sir. It may have come from his Dad calling his Father-in-Law ‘Sir’ and it just stuck. I’ll have to ask him later.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 20/11/2021 21:53

Say no and compromise on Madame

Gilly12345 · 20/11/2021 21:54

He is being ludicrous.

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/11/2021 21:57

Sod that.

Grandad Big Head it is then.

ErmineAndPearls · 20/11/2021 21:57

My DH apparently called his grandfather “Pompa”. Just a cute, childish mispronunciation of Papa, I assume. His family tried to carry this mistake on to the next generation, trying to get DD to call her grandpa Pompa, too. It didn’t work out for them. Because it’s stoopid. I call him “Grandpa”, so she does too.

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 20/11/2021 22:00

In the US it’s sir in some families for Dad, Grandad, even to elder men in general too

VelmaKelly88 · 20/11/2021 22:02

Weird is an understatement?! Has he be knighted recently?....🤣, No, he's Grandad,Gramps or Grandpa, silly sir!

WhatHoMarjorie · 20/11/2021 22:06

Americans love the whole sir and ma'am thing but the dad and grandad's actual title won't be sir.
MissCruellaDeVil · 20/11/2021 22:09

That's ridiculous lol. Let the kids choose as he obviously can't choose a proper name.

thistimelastweek · 20/11/2021 22:12

Let him have it.

It's just a noise to the grandchild and will make him sound ridiculous to everyone else

Imagine, 'say goodbye to granny and sir'.

Just makes sir sound silly. His choice.

LaChatte · 20/11/2021 22:13

Donk maybe?

Christmasbird · 20/11/2021 22:16

Papa maybe, Sir?
Unless he was Prince Phillip, no, of course not.

FindingMeno · 20/11/2021 22:21

Odd

Knifeandfawkes · 20/11/2021 22:26

Grandpa knobhead it is then

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/11/2021 22:29

Has he always had delusions of grandeur?
Tell him he’s a silly old sod and he’ll be Grandpa.

I chose Granny butbturns out I’m Bubba, so doesn’t matter what he wants anyway,

CPL593H · 20/11/2021 22:31

My grandfather was an actual Victorian and happily answered to Grampy.
