Best excuses for not drinking

Hi all,
I have very recently found out I'm pregnant (4 weeks) so we are not telling anyone at the moment. I'm really excited and after we've been trying for a quite a while, I want to sing it from the rooftops to be honest but know that's not sensible 😂.
We have a few family and other parties coming up (as well as Christmas!) and I just wondered what peoples best excuses have been for not drinking? It will be out of character for me not to have a drink so want to think ahead of what to say. I'm especially worried about a get together this weekend with DH's family: sister in law is VERY much the type to ask if I'm pregnant if I don't have a good excuse 🙄 thank you in advance ☺️

I always think it's so obvious isn't it!

Can you not take alcohol free drink and pretend your drinking? Bit of a mare hiding the bottle etc.
If going out, can you be the driver for the night?

Saying your not well, on ABs is always a massive give away! Unless you don't actually go.

Congrats Thanks

MeetMeAtOurSpot · 17/11/2021 16:13

Antibiotics for a uti that you can’t mix with alcohol.
That usually stops people prying further, no one wants to hear about urinary problems!
Congratulations Flowers

talkalarm · 17/11/2021 16:14

No one will believe your reasons if you usually drink. Sorry but it's true so be prepared for that.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

fidget223 · 17/11/2021 16:15

@SleighBells21 I like the idea of pretending I'm drinking, that hadn't even crossed my mind! This weekend we are going to SILs so maybe I could swap my drink (G&T) with water when no one's looking? Do you think that's possible or am I being unrealistic lol? I'm a terrible liar so feel this is going to be a nightmare 😂

Volunteer to drive.
Or accept a drink and carry it around all evening.
If someone asks if you want a top up, say "I've just had one thanks".

However, be prepared for everyone to guess the truth, even if they don't say anything to you.

fidget223 · 17/11/2021 16:16

@talkalarm @MeetMeAtOurSpot yes I feel like no one will believe me because normally I am always up for a drink 😂 maybe I should just pretend. Thank you 😊

Just pretend to drink! Take a glass and carry it around but don't drink from it. No one notices unless you draw attention to it.

There's loads of good alcohol free beers around at the moment. If you can sneak one of those into a glass then it won't be obvious.

HadEnoughOfBears · 17/11/2021 16:16

The antibiotics excuse is basically a code for 'hey I'm pregnant' so don't use that.

Either say you had a skinful the night before and are feeling too delicate or invent somewhere you have to drive to the next morning so you can't be over the limit.

Robbeckett · 17/11/2021 16:17

Say you've developed an allergy to alcohol, your throat gets red and itchy and you get lumps all around your mouth. Came on all of a sudden, you're gutted, you'd already bought your Christmas baileys and now it's taunting you from the cupboard while you're stuck with shloer/ coke.

fidget223 · 17/11/2021 16:17

Feel like at the moment pretending to drink is my best bet! I normally drink G&T so could just have the tonic I guess. I just know SIL is a good host so will probably make my drink for me. I might have to take it to the loo and tip away and replace with water!!

babyboybluex · 17/11/2021 16:17

Can you be the driver?

I've also seen people get bottles of wine, empty them and refill with non alcoholic wine or juice that is a similar match! Source the wine bottles from friends 😂😜

fidget223 · 17/11/2021 16:18

@Robbeckett ohhh hadn't thought of allergy either!

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2021 16:19

Nobody will believe the antibiotics or alcohol allergy thing. If you say that, you might as well say you’re pregnant.

I agree with drinking tonic with no gin, coke with no vodka etc. Or drive.

fidget223 · 17/11/2021 16:19

@babyboybluex I think this weekend I'll say I'll have one then drive, then pretend to drink it! Christmas is going to be hard as my family are big drinkers and love a boozy Christmas 😂

Nobody will believe this.

babyboybluex · 17/11/2021 16:20

@fidget223 Oh I'm with you! My brothers knew I was pregnant before I even said... "you've not been drinking, it's obvious" 😂

BloodyAlarms · 17/11/2021 16:22

Either pretend to drink or say that you had a skinful the previous evening and even the smell of booze makes you want to throw up. If anyone persists saying 'hair of the dog' move into pretending to drink.

GiveItUntilMarch · 17/11/2021 16:25

Get your Dh to make your drinks, or to take a big slurp of yours so you look like you are drinking. If you are normally a G&T then just do the T so it looks exactly the same.

If you can start the night by telling your nosey SIL that you are on your period and feel a bit crappy it might help stop any possible pregnancy talk. It is exactly what I did when I went out to a work's Christmas party. My lovely friend and I were in the toilets, knew nosey cow had come in and I say I am just so bloated from my period and I feel rubbish.

Congratulations by the way.

Lorw · 17/11/2021 16:26

You can get non alcoholic gin, pour it into an empty alcoholic gin bottle, that’s what I did - just said I wanted to drink that and nobody noticed 😂

maybe a bit elaborate ofcourse 😂

TopTabby · 17/11/2021 16:26

Nothing says pregnant quicker than the antibiotics line!!
I've mixed very weak summer fruit squash in an empty rosè wine bottle before, just don't offer to share with anyone!!Grin
I really doubt you'll get through the whole of Christmas without anyone guessing though.

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2021 16:27

Christmas is a fair time away. Maybe you’ll feel happy to tell people by then?

Strokethefurrywall · 17/11/2021 16:28

I just pretended to drink. I was at a wedding the day I found out so just kept a massive glass of wine with me and pretended to sip it.

Nobody will be paying attention to you (or your drink) at the events but at Christmas just keep pouring it away slyly. And pretend to be tipsy!

Congratulations!

Juliecloud · 17/11/2021 16:36

Can you say you are on a diet/fitness/health kick?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 17/11/2021 16:42

Sparkling water with lime and say it's a vodka soda or a G&T. Tip the bartender and tell them what you're up to.

OR if in a bar, order virgin drinks. No one will know a virgin mojito from a mojito.

fidget223 · 17/11/2021 16:52

These are great thank you so much! I don't know if I'll be ready to say anything at Christmas as shouldnt I wait until 12 weeks? Sorry if that's not right, this is my first pregnancy and the last few days have been a bit overwhelming as in and out of doctors for various things!
