13 weeks pregnant and bleeding a bit........

Ive been bleeding a bit and its brown blood. Before i went to the toilet and noticed it i felt like your stomach feels when your period comes. Not pains or anything iyswim. Ive been lucky enough to get an appointment for this afternoon at the doctors. My scan and first antenatal appointment is not until next week. Is 13 weeks far enough on to be able to hear a heartbeat at the doctors? I dont know what the doctor will do but i was wondering if he would be able to find a heartbeat at 13 weeks or is this too early?

i have heard mine and 12 weeks, but i am very skinny, and apparently its easier to hear without 'padding', so this may be a factor.

its good you have an appt, and i wish you luck.

fulloffestivefun · 14/12/2007 11:23

To be honest i'm can't remember when was the first time that they heard the heartbeat, but I just wanted to say congrats and good luck for this afternoon. I have lots of books but have leant it to a friend that is due in a few weeks so can't even look it up for you.

Not a lot of help was I.

3rdontheway · 14/12/2007 11:23

I do have extra padding so i hope i will be able to hear it.

dont be alarmed if they try and they cant though, baby still small and can hide easily! maybe they will scan you? i had a scan at 11wks and one at 13wks, because of pain.

Kerri28 · 14/12/2007 12:18

i went for my 12 week scan at hospital (dating scan) and was only actually 10 weeks pg, i'd got my dates wrong. heartbeat seen and heard. have no idea if i was skinny - probably although i like to forget those days and lear to love the, erm, curvier me!

hope everythings ok

3rdontheway · 14/12/2007 14:02

Theres more blood and its lighter red and not brown. Im not having any bad pains but feel as though im on my period rather than being 3 months pregnant. Im wearing a sanitary towel at the minute and its not like there is loads of blood but there is some. I dont know if im miscarrying. My appointment is not for another couple of hours My boobs are not tender any more and i never had a lot of sickness any way so i dont know whats happening

My boobs havent been sore for about 3 days or so now.

good luck for your appointment , I hope they send you for a scan, as you need to know what's happening.

many women bleed during pregnancy and go on to have a healthy baby, but you do need to be reassured that everything is ok, and I hope it is all ok.

3rdontheway · 14/12/2007 14:06

Hi Jingle my first scan is not until next wednesday so i really dont know what is going to happen. I really hope the doctor can find a heartbeat Im feeling scared tbh

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I don't suppose your local hospital has an early pregnancy unit? If so it might be worth getting yourself up there, to check it out - I expect the GP will refer you there anyway.
They usually can find a heartbeat as early as 6 weeks IIRC, so it should be possible if everything is alright with baby.
It could be nothing, a lot of women bleed in pregnancy, a lot go on to have perfectly healthy babies...it must be horrid not to know what is causing it though.

{{big hugs}}

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 14/12/2007 14:07

Sorry x posts with Belgo x

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 14/12/2007 14:10

I echo Twinkly's post - you would be betetr off getting straight to the EPU if they have one, in my experience the GP visit may be inconclusive unless they have the facilities there to scan.

As said before, lots of women bleed and goon to have normal pregnancies but I am sorry you are having this worry.

Good luck

orangehead · 14/12/2007 14:16

I bleed at 13 weeks and again at 18 weeks, and everything was fine. A scan can pick up a heartbeat from about 6 weeks, but at docs it is not till about 16 weeks. Tbh I dont think you gp can tell you anything and probably best to go to early preg assessment unit or even a and e, I always went to a and e and they were really good. hoppe it all goes ok

Didylicious · 14/12/2007 14:44

My midwife heard our babies heartbeat a couple of weeks ago (13 weeks!).

I have an anglesounds doppler of ebay, was cheap and could get heartbeat from 8/9 weeks quite easily (so long as you know where you're aiming - relatively close to your pubic bone at this stage!).

Good luck ,
I've been bleeding on and off from the beginning - sometimes red, sometimes brown, no pains. Baby is still here and growing well so far.

It might be a cervical erosion (where the surface of your cervix - is irritated by the pregnancy hormones and bleeds on and off. if it's this, it's no threat to your pregnancy).

scorpio1 · 14/12/2007 14:45

how are you 3rdontheway?

NoviceKnitter · 14/12/2007 14:57

I had bleeding at 13 weeks that went on for 3 weeks - mostly brownish but also some bright red. Was terrified. It was a cervical erosion. All was fine and DD now 6 months. Bleeding is scary and should always be checked out - I agree a trip to EPU a good idea. But it's also very common and doesn't have to mean something bad. Good luck.

missnatalie · 14/12/2007 15:01

I had a massive bleed at 12w that turned out to be something to do with the placenta taking over from the yolk sac. Apparently its quite common around 12 and i know lots of people that its happened to. Try to get to your EPU asap. x

How are you doing 3rdontheway?

3rdontheway · 15/12/2007 09:29

Hi i went to the appointment and the doctor couldnt find a heartbeat but found my pulse about three times. I kept thinking it was the babys heartbeat. She said dont worry about not finding it as im only 13 weeks and that if i want to put my mind at rest go up to the hospital (which is miles away) or wait till next Wednesday for my scan. I told her there were no clots but the blleding went from brown to brighter red. Im still bleeding now. She said to rest as much as possible over the weekend. So im none the wiser as to whats wrong. Im thinking of going to the hospital today as i dont know if i can wait for the scan on Wednesday. Thanks for the messages

I dont know if it is a cervial erosion as i have been feeling period like cramps since yesterday. Im not in a lot of pain. The only way to describe it is it feels like im on my period.

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 15/12/2007 18:33

Yes, try and get to a hospital for a scan as soon as possible. Good luck to you, it must be awful waiting and not knowing what's happening.

orangehead · 15/12/2007 21:05

How you doing? Try and get to the hosp if you can

pindy · 16/12/2007 13:37

Hope you are feeling better and reassured.
