How much weight did you lose immediately after giving birth?

I'm interested if the average weight gain is 30lb, baby is only 7-8lb of that.. how much do you also lose with the baby after birth within first weeks or so?

Gained 9kg and was back to just below pre-pregnancy weight (BMI 20.8) plus in normal clothes before 1 week post birth. Baby was 3.2kg. Everyone is different but you don't need to gain a lot of weight, 9-10kg is fine if you're a normal BMI. The more you gain the more you have to lose and breastfeeding doesn't necessarily make it magically disappear! Keeping active and not changing your diet (other than 200 extra cals per day in 3rd trimester if normal BMI) should mean you only gain what is needed. If you are overweight/underweight to start with it is slightly different. NHS website has guidance as to how much to gain depending on your BMI.

I lost around 1.5 stone immediately and the remaining extra half stone over the next 6 months or so. Guess I was lucky. Enormous now though at 53, but losing weight slowly.

@MGee123 - if I lost 12kg within 24hrs of birth, then I must have needed to gain more than 9kg surely? Ds was 4kg alone, so 8kg must have been placenta, liquid, etc. despite gaining 20kg I was still basically same size with a bump, all lost quickly after

I gained just under four stone, I was down around 15lbs three weeks after the birth, and had 3 stone down in total when DD was at around 3 - 4 months.

I put on 5kg. Baby was nearly 4kg. Placenta and fluid made up the rest.

I was probably a little lighter after giving birth than when I was first pregnant.

I don't really know the numbers but know that I lost way more than the weight of the actual baby in the few weeks postpartum due to all the water loss at night. Then with them literally sucking the life out of me, I was pre-preg weight or lower by 4 or 5 months.

That's my BMI across two pregnancies - I put on more with DC2, but both time I lost a stone the day I gave birth (DC1 was 7lb1, DC2 was 8lb0). I've lost the weight easily both times but with my first my weight then crept up after I stopped breastfeeding and went back to work so I'm going to have to make an effort to not do the same again!

1.5 stone. I had pre eclampsia though so had swollen up

TheLastLonelyBakedBean · 10/11/2021 00:36

That was in all three of my pregnancies. I put on 5 stone twice, and lost 1/2 a stone once, but weighed about the same going into delivery because one pregnancy I was very overweight to start with
