What do people think of Edith for a girl? Chose a boy's name ages ago and really cannot think of a girl's name. Edith came to us last night it was my DH grandmother's name. Like the shortened version Edie. What do you think?

Love it. A really nice name which also has a really pretty shortened version.

Does your dh like it as well?

dingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 11/12/2007 10:14

I love the name Edie. It was my nan's name. She was Edith Emily and I always fancied it for a girl's name, I had all boys though.

SquonkaClaus · 11/12/2007 10:15

my grandma was called Edith.

I always think it is very old fashioned, but they're the kind of names at the moment that are really cool, aren't they.

I think I like it.

ShowOfHands · 11/12/2007 10:16

It's lovely. I like old fashioned names like Edith, Iris, Mabel etc

mishytoeandwine · 11/12/2007 10:16

I think Edith is a lovely name!

Kathyate6mincepies · 11/12/2007 10:17

I LOVE that name. It's so lovely and soft and Anglo-Saxon.

nigglewiggle · 11/12/2007 10:17

Hubby loves it. Very fond of granny, so I know he and his family would love it. Only well-known Edith I can think of is Edith Bowman?

We have a very common surname so I need something a little bit unusual, but not silly!

another famous Edith

Kathyate6mincepies · 11/12/2007 10:20

E.Nesbit (Treasure Seekers, Phoenix and the Carpet etc) was Edith.

nigglewiggle · 11/12/2007 10:21

Of course - je ne regret choosing the name Edith!

I like Esme and Iris, but think it would be nice to go with a family name. Everyone seems positive and the well-known Ediths are a decent bunch - thanks .

Aah, not everyone! Good to be honest though!

Lovely

E.Nesbit was a great writer.

QuintessentialShadowOfSnowball · 11/12/2007 10:27

Edith, is lovely, it was my grandmothers name. I prefer the english pronounication. In Norway the H is silent, so it is pronounced like Edit.

turquoise · 11/12/2007 10:29

I think it's lovely. Elegant, classy, unusual - and Edie is sweet too.

nigglewiggle · 11/12/2007 10:29

As hubby is Irish, could be confused with eejit!

I prefer Edie to Edith tbh BUT I think that if i were to go for Edie I would make Edith her formal name. There are a lot of Evies around at the moment so Edie is a little different but more so if you put Edith on the birth certificate.

Lauriefairycake · 11/12/2007 10:31

Edie and Evie are my favourite names but I wouldn't bother with a 'long' version

Unfortunately dh hates them so at the moment our fantasy daughter is called Olivia.

OComeOLIVEfaithfOIL · 11/12/2007 10:32

Edith is lovely

I love old names

and there will not be another 3 in her class I bet like there are with other names I could mention

nigglewiggle · 11/12/2007 10:32

I imagine she would be known as Edie until she grew out of it. So would put Edith on Birth certificate incase she wanted to be Prime Minister!

One of the nicest, sunniest people I know is called Edith so I think it's a lovely name.

She came to work here as a placement student though and before I met her I have to say I assumed she was a lady of more mature years... (not that there's anything wrong with that obv)

constancereader · 11/12/2007 10:48

There is a baby Edith at one of my groups. It is a lovely name. I think it is becoming more popular, as I know of another as well.
