What do people think of Edith for a girl? Chose a boy's name ages ago and really cannot think of a girl's name. Edith came to us last night it was my DH grandmother's name. Like the shortened version Edie. What do you think?

I love Edie but prefer Edith with a French accent I have to say. Also with name association if you saw the movie of Edith Piaf's life, she had such a terrible childhood and life imo I just couldn't (a bit like a teacher finding it hard to pick a name due to a student.) Bad move to do a straw poll here though you will get very different answers .

I have to say it's been very positive and we now have a definite girls name - hoorah. Thanks to everyone who posted, even the dissenters. It's good to have a balanced view. I knew some wouldn't like it, but you can't please everyone. I'll keep her away from mobility scooters though!

It was my grandma's name
I love it

trockodile · 12/12/2007 10:19

Ny Gran's name too and it is my favourite if we ever have a dd! Husband likes it too -but not so keen on Edie as he says it reminds him on the film Twin Towns (welsh film about teenage joy-riders circa 1995 where sister (Edie) works in a massage parlour). I like both though.

LikerabbitsBX · 12/12/2007 10:28

my 9 year old is called Coral.

SazzaK · 12/12/2007 15:39

Bit old lady for me sorry. And Edie just makes me think of Edie McCredie who you'll know well if you have kids already!! But I know the classic names are all back in, my Dd's middle name is Grace, you don't get more old-fashioned than that.

Clary · 12/12/2007 16:14

Ah but you see old lady names are the way forward

A sample from DD's year:
Sophie, Grace, Emily, Ella, Hannah, Constance, Maisie, Daisy, Rose, Mia....
Who'd have thought it 20 years ago?

coby · 12/12/2007 16:36

yep, to add to that list I can immediately bring to mind a Tilly, Poppy and Kitty and DDs' nursery. There seems to be a mix of older names and gastly (IMO) made up new names - or very weird spellings of normal names

I still think Edith is LOVELY - you have made a good choice nigglewiggle. Will look out for birth announcements for 'Edith Nigglewiggle'

edam · 12/12/2007 16:37

I think it's a lovely name.

walkinginawinterBundleland · 12/12/2007 16:37

Edith is absolutely lovely and rather wonderfully dignified and Edie is very sweet for a little girl. I wanted this name so much for my daughter but boyfriend vetoed it so she ended up being Tabitha (which actually suits her down to the ground so it was good in the end).

PortAndLemonaid · 14/12/2007 20:43

Lovely. One of those old-fashioned names that is starting to come back so doesn't seem odd, but I don't think it's one that will jump to the top of the popularity lists any time soon.

PoinsettiaBouquets · 14/12/2007 21:15

I like it but I like Editha better (rhymes with editor), bit more glamourous.
