When Did You Start Buying?

As above really! When did you start buying?

I’m 22 weeks and have bought a couple of vests which we used to announce to kids we were pregnant but absolutely nothing else.

Will probably buy pushchair and next to me bed second hand but not sure what to go for yet. Might buy new though. Not bought anything for hospital bag either.

Wondering when I should start buying these things.

I started buying the day I found out I was pregnant (I obviously bought gender neutral colours) until I found out I'm having a little boy. Now nearly 29 weeks pregnant and he has so many clothes, if you start early the more things baby will have for when they are here Smile good luck

MrsRubyMonday · 15/10/2021 08:44

I was ten weeks yesterday, we said we weren't buying anything at all until 12 weeks.. but we couldn't resist one outfit we saw on sale at about 8 weeks and then last night we added a set of three babygros and a set of three tiny shorts, also both on sale. We won't be buying anything large for some time yet though, and we aren't shopping for anything yet, just picked up a few bits we fell in love with.

Blxo94 · 15/10/2021 09:21

21 weeks here, I have bought tommee tippee sterilising kit, and a football strip. That's it 😂!

We got told the sex 2 weeks ago. But she wasn't sure as cord was in the way. So awaiting my rescan next Wednesday to start buying really. Will buy clothes and hospital bag etc. Not being pram or cot or next to me until a month before. Risky but simply don't have the room at the moment for it to be lying in boxes!x

Blxo94 · 15/10/2021 09:21

Not buying*

NannyPear · 15/10/2021 09:23

I found a bargain bugaboo and snuzpod 3 on marketplace around 14 weeks so picked up them. Then started buying clothes after finding out the sex at around 17 weeks.
With DC1 I definitely waited longer, past 20 weeks. Didn't buy much with DC2. This time need to prepare from scratch again as got rid of all the baby stuff from before and just picking up bargains as I go along! Will wait for the likes of Black Friday etc to get discounts on things I plan on buying.

Arecklessmanor · 15/10/2021 09:54

Oh I haven't started buying anything for the baby yet and I'm 27 weeks, have looked at prams and planning to order next week once we decide.
I'll buy some babygros and nappies in a few weeks and family will buy presents so will wait and see what we've got, they don't really need loads of clothes in the same size and I don't want to have a lot of things we won't use. My siblings had too many clothes for the babies and gave loads away.

I have bought maternity clothes and pillow for me.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 15/10/2021 10:09

Same as @Arecklessmanor have bought very little at coming up to 25 weeks. Clothes wise I've no idea what size they'll be born so how long they'll be in newborn or 0-3 months. Friends have definitely overbought in the past so I've been given new clothes their babies never got to wear.

Bought some mat clothes for me, a pregnancy pillow, a couple of vests and babygrows age 0-3, reusable nappies and a cute washable rug to protect my carpet for the baby's room. Hoping to get the rest in Black Friday sales

Berkeys · 15/10/2021 10:14

@melwindle not a good idea! I did this and now I have baby clothes but no baby. Wait until the risk of miscarriage risk lowers!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 15/10/2021 10:17

@Berkeys I'm really sorry to hear this. Hope you're okay.

I had a miscarriage last year and that def factored into my decision not to buy stuff until after 20 weeks

MadamMaltesers · 17/10/2021 11:15

@Berkeys so true, i miscarried at 20 weeks altho i didnt buy anything leading up to it.

Tina8800 · 17/10/2021 11:43

I've got the push chair and nursery furniture by week 16. I bought them second hand so I couldn't really wait. I'm 28 weeks now and have nearly everything. This week I started to pack the hospital bags.
I guess it's really depends how free you will be and how much help you can get later on. My husband will have a crazy month with work before the baby due so I wanted to set up everything while I can move and help, rather than bothering him to go shopping and put things together when he is extreamly busy.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/10/2021 11:52

Crikey, this is fascinating I went out at about 35 weeks and ordered a pram/carrycot thing, cot, mattress, feeding chair, chest of drawers, all for delivery early in the NY. Took home changing mat, 6 baby gros, 6 vests, blankets, sheets, Muslins, hat, mittens, top and tail bowl. Baby arrived Xmas day ay at 36.3.

People were very kind and lent us a bath, moses basket, car seat, babygros, vests, etc. DH had to buy emergency nappies, cotton wool, sudocream, maternity pads as soon as the shops opened.

It was a real hassle having to work out how to put the pram and ot together with a new baby.

I'd say about 32/33 weeks with delivery before the birth is ideal and get them ready pre arrival.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 18/10/2021 10:16

I bought a few outfits between 12-20 weeks. Bought a few small bits then as well. Bigger purchases all came after 20 week scan - I wanted to make sure everything was ok.

Anon08 · 18/10/2021 10:33

Bought a few clothes in second trimester and shopped around for the pram we wanted but only started buying from 28 weeks ish. We have all the big things so if she turns up we’re ok (bedside crib, pram and car seat) and I just ordered hospital bag stuff last week.

Redpanda21 · 18/10/2021 11:05

We bought a second hand pushchair/carrycot etc at the weekend so have finally started buying!

CTR1000 · 18/10/2021 11:23

I’m 33 weeks and bought our first thing (pram and car seat) last week!

I wouldn’t say I’m superstitious, but have been reluctant to buy anything too early as well aware that things can go wrong late as well as early in pregnancy. Equally I appreciate that if baby arrives next week we’re going to have to do some emergency shopping!

Each to their own I think.

Bells3032 · 18/10/2021 11:29

at 22-23 weeks ordered the big stuff. to arrive at about 32 weeks. i'm at 25 weeks and don't have any clothing etc yet

RosieLemonade · 18/10/2021 13:10

I won't buy anything big till 30+ weeks. Have the money in a savings pot so it can't be spent on anything else. Can't stand the trouble of having it in the house.

Eumy · 18/10/2021 13:18

After my 12 week scan I bought a handful cheap maternity clothes, and I did research on what crib/pram/car seat I wanted. I then waited till 21+ weeks to order any of the big stuff - mostly because I found some good deals, but also because I’m nervous with Christmas coming up (I’m due jan) about disruption and delays with delivery.

I am glad I did order with good time, as my car seat arrived yesterday and it’s missing a piece!

I’ve not bought any baby clothes yet, as I imagine I’m going to be getting a lot at Christmas!

jolota · 18/10/2021 13:19

We started looking online at options after my 12 week scan (that was actually at 14 weeks). We picked up some free nappies & neutral baby clothes from facebook marketplace before my 20 week scan.
Since my 20 week scan we've got a pram, baby carrier, cot, moses basket, bouncer chair, playmat, high chair, baby bath & more clothes free or really cheap online.
The reason I'm doing it so early is because we're trying to save money we are searching for the items we want second hand, which means they all need cleaning which is quite a lot of effort that I wouldn't want to do when I was heavily pregnant.
If I was starting 30 weeks + I don't think I'd be able to cope with the effort of buying second hand.
If you're not buying second hand then probably no real reason to start purchasing before 30 weeks unless you want to be organised early.
We will probably buy expensive things that have to be new (ie car seat) after 30 weeks.
But buying all this second hand, we have lost very little money even if the worst happens & I am hopeful we'd still get to use it in the future. Would just be painful in the short term having the room all set up.
We also have to get of lots of stuff & reorganise our house to fit the baby stuff in, so starting early has helped me get an idea of the space we need and do some sorting/deep cleaning before I get too big.
22 weeks now and have every basic thing we need except the car seat.

Dollywilde · 18/10/2021 13:24

I had DD in August and we ordered our pram about 2 days before lockdown around 18 weeks, sooner than I’d have liked but I was hearing stories of backlogs at factories in China and had visions of being left with a newborn and no way to get them around.

Big bits were from 20 weeks onward (next to me crib, car seat etc). Smaller bits from 28 weeks. I think we were done by about 32 weeks and set everything up at 35 weeks.

Am now 11 weeks pregnant with number 2 and money will be tighter this time (two under two) but luckily there’s very little to buy. The only essentials will be new bottles and dummies (both just in case but they were a godsend with refluxy DD), new bedding for the crib and a double buggy. Double buggy will be getting ordered as soon as we’re out of the 20 week scan so we can spread the cost, other than that we’re pretty sorted. We didn’t know what we were having first time around so all clothes until 3 months are gender neutral anyway.

AllSinging · 18/10/2021 13:39

I’m almost 25wks and have bought a few clothing bits and we bought a second hand snuzpod over the weekend. I’m planning on going to look at and try
pram/cot/car seat etc in the next couple of weeks with a view to buy next month as I don’t want to be rushing around in the new year (and I’ll be limiting going out to busy places as I’ll be close to full-term). Basically Christmas is my deadline to have everything bought or ordered

ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 18/10/2021 13:41

I bought baby clothes years before I got pregnant

Redpanda21 · 18/10/2021 13:46

@jolota we went to a pushchair shop and found 2 which we liked but we decided that we just couldn’t justify spending £1000+ on a travel system. We’ve bought a 3 year old £1000+ travel system for £225 and my mum has just bought a new car seat to go on it. There’s a few marks but will give it a spruce up.

We’re waiting on a family member to say if they have anything to sell to us but we will try buy as many things second hand.

Most of our house furniture is second hand and we have some beautiful things, no reason why it doesn’t apply to baby things too, except the mattresses and safety items of course.

We got a couple of bits after our 12 week scan as we were so excited - nothing major, just a couple of babygros. Then after our anomaly scan, we started getting more. I am now at 25+1 and we have decorated the nursery, bought essentials like nappies, bottles, dummies etc, a few clothing items, a baby bath and a changing table and mat. We are very lucky in that my parents are buying us a travel system for christmas, and my DH's parents are buying us a cot bed for christmas also. So we only have a few bits to get now - snuzpod, bouncer, play gym, etc and some more smaller essential items.

It is completely down to the individual but we personally wanted to wait until the 20 week scan to ensure everything was well with bubba, and also to find out the gender so we could decorate and buy certain colour things.
