6 weeks 5 days pregnant - likelihood of seeing a heartbeat

Hi guys. I have had ongoing light spotting off and on since 4 weeks. My HCG is doubling but I am due a scan on Friday when I will be 6 weeks & 5 days pregnant. I am so so nervous and anxious over whether it’s likely to see a heartbeat then. What’s your experience with a scan at that gestation?

Yes @MollySxx you are definitely right, I am so lucky to have seen a baby with a heartbeat, I hope I didn’t come across ungrateful in my messages. I do count myself extremely lucky to have been able to fall pregnant and to currently have a growing baby. I’ll be rooting for this tiny baby & hope it continues to grow 🙏🏻 Think the pregnancy hormones have gotten the better of me today too!

I agree that seeing is heartbeat is definitely a positive. Do you track ovulation? You might just have ovulated very late, hence the dates being off.

These early scans often cause as much anxiety as reassurance! Goodluck for your next scan. It’ll be a hard wait, but I think any amount of waiting for any scan is awful.

This is my first pregnancy and I’m currently just trying to distract myself whilst waiting for my 12 week scan

KittyKate34 · 03/09/2021 13:02

Thanks @Derbee, yes I was tracking ovulation that cycle and got the static smiley on the clear blue OPK so pretty sure of my ovulation date but they said it’s to do with ovulation date and cycle length and my cycles aren’t always 100% consistent (eventhough for most part I have 31 day cycle) so Doctor thinks that maybe my cycle length might be the reason for the dates being off. Also the midwife said the baby was right up on top of the yolk sac so it was a tricky position to measure too so all of that combined, I’m hoping baby is measuring ok and it’s not behind where it should be at.

Congratulations on seeing a heartbeat 🥰
At my first scan I thought I was a few days further than I measured and was worried about that as I too was certain of my dates however, they are going off a matter of millimetres and that can easily be affected by babies position and the picture quality.
Equally, babies grow so so much in the first few weeks I think it's quite normal for their size to vary and kind of 'stabilise' at 12 weeks. Hence why dating is much easier then.
It's really great that you saw a heartbeat and I hope you can get through this next wait with as little worry as possible ❤️🤞🏻 sending positive vibes your way xx

I went for an early scan (needed reassurance after a blighted ovum last year) thinking I was 8w2d, a strong heartbeat was seen but measured at only 6w3d. I don’t know when I ovulated but I know that date can’t be right as it would mean I would have conceived during a time my partner was away and we weren’t having sex, and would put implantation after getting a positive test. The scan was 3 weeks ago and everything still seems fine, have my 12 weeks scan in 2 weeks time so waiting to see what they estimate as due date.

KittyKate34 · 03/09/2021 14:32

Thanks for the positive message @Nervyy and @HW1989 glad to hear all seems well! Great that your 12 week scan is coming up soon! I’ll have my fingers crossed for you. Thanks for the lovely messages everyone, I will be sure to update once I have my next scan (don’t know exact date but they said they’ll send out a letter & it should be for 10 days time).

MollySxx · 04/09/2021 17:36

@Nicci1985 could you make out much on the scan? Or was it all a bit blurry?x

Nicci1985 · 04/09/2021 17:51

@MollySxx they had to do an internal it was tiny but she pointed out the yolk sac and heartbeat x

Hey guys, been on Mumsnet for years but very rarely ever post! I'm 4+4 today. Found out a few days ago, although I've booked a private scan for when I'm 7+5. It's been 11 years since I was last pregnant l, DS1 is 10!! I'm older now (31) although that's not old by any means. My life is much different and a lot more settled now. Yet, I'm so much more anxious this time round? I had a really bad birth with my last, plus constant headaches and nausea all the way through. I hope it isn't as bad this time round!! Congrats to all of you ❤️

SillyBry · 04/09/2021 20:23

@KittyKate34 I had a scan at 5+4 to rule out an ectopic… saw no heartbeat, but a yolk sac and fetal pole. They thought I was 6+3 based on LMP, so it was “behind what they expected”… but my cycle was long so I wasn’t too surprised.
They basically said to me that it has as much chance as any other pregnancy and they were sure it would develop normally.
I’m now 39+5, so it did get there! Good luck!

Nicci1985 · 04/09/2021 20:25

@DanniiF90 every pregnancy is different I know the feeling though I was very anxious but after my scan today I feel better good luck keep us posted xx

KittyKate34 · 05/09/2021 11:39

@MollySxx how did you get on this morning at your scan 😊🙏 xx

MollySxx · 09/09/2021 14:05

@Nicci1985 amazing🥰 little heartbeat flickering away. I'm 7 weeks today based of LMP, but they dated me 6w 1d, which they said is normal at this stage because everything is so small. But so happy, SO relived🌈

Nicci1985 · 09/09/2021 14:08

@MollySxx that’s amazing 😊 so happy for you

KittyKate34 · 10/09/2021 09:20

Aw that’s wonderful news @MollySxx I have my next scan next Tuesday when I should be 7 weeks 2 days approximately so I’ll let you all know how it goes.

@KittyKate34 sending all my love to you🤞🏼🌈✨

Nicci1985 · 10/09/2021 09:33

@KittyKate34 good luck I’m sure it’ll all be fine. 😊

@MollySxxWhat will your due date be ? I’m 30th April x

MollySxx · 10/09/2021 10:27

@Nicci1985 they dated me as 6w 1d yesterday, but I did think I was 7 weeks but that was counting from my LMP. She said that was all normal. So my due date counting from the 6w 1d will be 4th May. She told me not to really judge till 12 weeks scan x

Nicci1985 · 10/09/2021 10:30

@MollySxx when I got my scan she dated me exactly what I thought I was from LMP the 12 week scan might move me day or two either side x

Nervyy · 10/09/2021 14:08

Congrats to those who have had positive scans and good luck to those who have scans coming up!! 🥰❤️🤞🏻

KittyKate34 · 14/09/2021 09:24

Hi guys, thought I’d update you after my scan today. Baby measuring a week behind my original date which it has been all along so they will re-set my dates. Today baby measured 7 week 1 day when according to re-adjusted dates, should be 7 week 4 days. Heartbeat was good, 166 bpm. I continue to have spotting daily so they have put me on 200mg progesterone pessary x 2 daily for two weeks until my next scan in two weeks, then they will assess if I continue to need up to 12 weeks. The cause of the bleeding could be from either a cervical ectropian I have or a Subchorionic Hematoma they saw (it is small & they are hoping it will re-absorb itself). They said seeing as there is a heartbeat, risk of miscarriage is reduced but given it’s very ealry pregnancy and some complications we just need to wait and see how things progress. Just so much to take in for this pregnancy, my pregnancy with my son was much more straightforward. I continue to have pregnancy symptoms daily (nausea, fatigue, sore boobs) so while they are annoying symptoms I’m happy to have them as puts my mind at ease that the pregnancy is continuing. I’m very unsettled about something going wrong but will just take it one day at a time and wait for my next scan 🙏🏻 Hoping you’re all doing ok xx
