Old wives tales regarding sex of baby

NatMoz · 21/07/2021 09:32

I'm pregnant with my first and won't find out the sex until birth.

In the meantime the old wives tales suggest it's a boy. For example, my morning sickness was minimal, I was never sick, just some retching. Apparently limited sickness/nausea indicates a boy.

My craving has been salty. Bacon and gravy which again indicates a boy.

I have always slept on my right but since getting pregnant only feel comfortable on my left when sleeping which is another old wives tale for a boy.

Did the old wives tales match your baby's sex??

They have been generally right so far for me - didn't find out the sex of my son until he was born but my gut was telling me he was a boy. This time we found out we are having a girl and again my gut was telling me it was a girl.

With my son I had minimal/no morning sickness, with this one my morning sickness was really bad.

With my son I was all bump, with this one I have put weight on all around.

I've liked both salty and sweet with both and haven't had a sleeping side preference with either. Complexion has been fine with both too.

I genuinely think mother's instinct is usually right and whatever the Mum's gut feeling is is right! When they pulled my son out and said 'it's a booooy', I said 'I know!' :) x

That's lovely. Weirdly I was confident it was a girl but the old wives tales say otherwise so I just don't know!!!!!!

We have the 20 week scan next week and dying to know but will hold out!

When I was pregnant with my 1st child some of my workmates tried to tell me I was having a girl after dangling my wedding ring in a piece of my hair over my belly.
I cant recall if it was meant to move anti clockwise or clockwise, either way this was done several times & I was "definitely carrying a girl".
Subsequently wee boy arrives haha

Samanabanana · 21/07/2021 09:41

First pregnancy, very sick, craved lots of salty foods, carried low: boy. Second pregnancy no sickness, craved lots of sweet foods, carried high: boy. So make of that what you will Grin

Houserenoqueen · 21/07/2021 09:42

No morning sickness in either pregnancy and I’ve had girl, boy, girl.

Amz6219 · 21/07/2021 09:45

I think girl then. I am yet to find any Mum whose gut feeling has been wrong! :)

Chinese Gender Charts have been wrong both times for me too - people seem to swear by them but not for me! x

RavenclawsRoar · 21/07/2021 09:49

Nope! Terrible terrible morning sickness with dc1. No cravings, only aversions. Vomiting multiple times a day. Diagnosed with hyperemisis when I couldn't keep down water. Felt shit the whole 9m. Boy!
Dc2: more "classic" morning sickness. Nausea and sick about twice a day during the first trimester then felt absolutely fine. No cravings, no aversions. Boy!
Currently pregnant. Sickness in between the previous two - not as bad as dc1 but worse than dc2. Craving all things sweet - watermelon going down a treat. And at my 20w scan.....Boy!
Also carried differently each time. Everyone was convinced dc1 was a girl because apparently I had all "girl" symptoms and "carried like a girl" (whatever that means).

Mumvschildren · 21/07/2021 09:51

I had really bad morning sickness from the moment the sperm met my egg
I carried high and round but was very ‘neat’ as my aunt pointed out

Boy!everyone cried

Girl-and she wasn’t yellow due to the odd can of Diet Coke I drank

Next 3 babies-felt a bit sick and carried low but was all bump

Everyone said no 2boy-right
No3 boy-right
No4-girl-wrong
No5-girl-wrong

No 6-I carried all over (my arse was the size of a double decker bus) and high-had a hour of morning sickness but looked grey the whole pregnancy
I was bloody massive
Everyone was ‘massive twin boys!’

Nope one girl of normal weight-my mother swears the cord was round her neck at birth as I had raised my arms above my head for a few seconds the week before while putting a box of weetabix in a cupboard

It’s all twaddle-your baby is what baby is

(Congratulations by the way)

Bluey18 · 21/07/2021 09:53

In short, no. I had what I would call normal morning sickness with my DD, HG this time with a boy! I carried a lot bigger with my DD too, she was a big baby! Ring test wrong for both. Craved mostly sweet with both.

PaolaDiLorenzo · 21/07/2021 09:54

Not really, I was sick throughout the whole of my first two pregnancies and both were boys. My two SIL's were also very sick doing theirs and both had boys.

NatMoz · 21/07/2021 09:58

Sounds like unless I spot a willy on the scan my theories are just theories Grin.

Did everyone find out at 20 weeks or wait until birth?

I didn't find out until birth but from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I was convinced I would have a boy.

All old wives tales pointed to boy - no morning sickness, carried only in the front etc.

I picked 2 possible boy names but couldn't find a single girls name I would use. Luckily my intuition was right and gave birth to my beautiful boy💙

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/07/2021 10:12

1st: craved salty stuff, sweet made me puke - had a boy.
2nd: I craved sweet stuff, salty made me sick - had a boy.
3rd: was sick through whole pg no matter what I craved or ate/drink. lived on Fanta - had a boy
4th: can't remember anything particular - had a boy
MC: had horrible migraines, craved baked beens & beer. it was a girl
5th: sick through most of pg, craved orange juice , had a boy
6th - hardly any morning sickness and only threw up twice. had migraines. craved beer, smoked salmon & Tropicana - had a girl
7th - sick almost all the way through no matter what. had awful motion sickness too. craved protein and orange juice - had a boy

oh and my belly was exactly the same shape with all of them, all out front, slim waist, couldn't tell from behind that I was pg!
you could definitely tell from the side or front though🤣

missrose0110 · 21/07/2021 10:13

Way off for me. I was so sick when I was pregnant with my son, throwing up right until he was born. Pregnant now and I've not thrown up once and it's a girl 💗

Bluey18 · 21/07/2021 10:13

@NatMoz It's funny you say that. DD we found out on purpose at 25 weeks. DS was supposed to be a surprise but let's just say he left nothing to the imagination at the anomaly scan 🤣

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/07/2021 10:16

only found out sex with DS5, because I wanted as much info as possible after the MC and with DS6, because we were moving when I was 7m pg so needed to be practical about what to pack

SillyBry · 21/07/2021 10:20

@Bluey18 Boys will be boys... can't help but wave their willies around!!! LOL!!

I craved salty food and was nauseous but not sick with my first and she was a girl.
I'm all bump this time, so everyone says boy. The midwife said the heartbeat "sounded like a girl"... WTF that's supposed to mean, I have no idea!!!
I'm 33 weeks, so not too long to find out now!

whatswithtodaytoday · 21/07/2021 10:23

Gut feeling girl, lots of nausea and sickness, craved salty foods, boy.

pumpkinpie01 · 21/07/2021 10:23

I had a midwife who asked if I had any chosen any names , told her we had only picked a boys name . She told me not to bother choosing a girls as the heartbeat was slow so it was definitely a boy,she was right. When I was pregnant with my dd her heartbeat was definitely faster than her brothers

Topseyt · 21/07/2021 10:28

I had no sickness with any of mine and all three were girls.

8dpwoah · 21/07/2021 10:36

I was absolutely certain I was having a boy the first time as had little sickness and my bump was like I'd stuck a football up my top, couldn't tell from the back. Plus I looked really well, glowing/glossy (didn't feel it) so that all said boy, apparently. I was very surprised when they handed me a girl! I was less surprised that she was hairy though as I'd had terrible indigestion so I found that old wives tale true.

Found out at 17 weeks that this one is also a girl, if we hadn't have found out I'd have suspected the same as I've had a very similar pregnancy outwardly, other than my skin hasn't been anywhere near as good as it was last time!

8dpwoah · 21/07/2021 10:38

Oh the heartbeat, well that was interesting as I saw lots of different midwives with DD and the guesses were mainly boy too! It was nice having them joining in the guessing, even the doctors during induction were playing along.

Ifitquacks · 21/07/2021 10:41

I’ve got 3 (2 girls and a boy) and by far my worst sickness was with the boy!

LizzieMacQueen · 21/07/2021 10:45

Not old wives tale, but I 'knew' or worked out the likely sex by knowing rather accurately when I'd conceived.

Found out sex at their births but I had,

Girl. Conceived couple days after sex, long living sperm meeting fresh egg.

Boy. Conceived after I'd ovulated, fastest sperm.

grey12 · 21/07/2021 10:58

3 girls and never felt any sickness Wink

A guy in a shop told me my skin was beautiful (it was Grin I miss my pregnancy skin Sad) and that meant it was a girl
