Old wives tales regarding sex of baby

NatMoz · 21/07/2021 09:32

I'm pregnant with my first and won't find out the sex until birth.

In the meantime the old wives tales suggest it's a boy. For example, my morning sickness was minimal, I was never sick, just some retching. Apparently limited sickness/nausea indicates a boy.

My craving has been salty. Bacon and gravy which again indicates a boy.

I have always slept on my right but since getting pregnant only feel comfortable on my left when sleeping which is another old wives tale for a boy.

Did the old wives tales match your baby's sex??

@Amz6219

I think girl then. I am yet to find any Mum whose gut feeling has been wrong! :)

Chinese Gender Charts have been wrong both times for me too - people seem to swear by them but not for me! x

I was certain I was having a girl until DS appeared on the scan. And I threw up for seven months of the nine.

Btw we take soooo long choosing names I would never wish on us to not know the sex of the child before birth ConfusedConfusedConfused that would mean twice the work, twice the name worry ConfusedConfusedConfused

And if you don't get a good underside view, then it's not a sex scan...... we were told DD1 was a boy at first....

bigbluebus · 21/07/2021 11:19

My Irish Community midwife (an older lady) tried to tell me I was having a girl due to some similarly ridiculous theories. I replied 'no, it's a boy'. She argued with me that I was definitely having a girl until I pointed out that I'd had a CVS test at 11 weeks and had confirmation from the hospital consultant in writing that I was having a boy!

I was sure my second was a girl and he was most definitely a boy :)
Amz6219 · 21/07/2021 11:38

We didn't find out with first and wasn't intrigued at all, enjoyed all the guessing!

This time found out for practical reasons - we have hoards of clothes that we didn't whether to keep or charity/handmedown to family :) x

I was absolutely convinced I was having a boy just by my gut feeling with DC1, and everyone around me for various Old Wives reasons thought too that it was a boy, apart from DH. At birth I commented to DH that it was a funny looking boy and he had to gently point out she was actually a normal looking girl! So I got it entirely wrong. Pregnant with second mystery child now, haven't found out and have no strong feelings either way this time. Carrying neatly again, less sickness but probably more due to having my anxiety more in check this time around, food aversions (sugar and diary) exactly the same as last time, so who knows? I'm thinking girl and DH thinks boy. We'll find out in October! Grin

Cookofcastamar · 21/07/2021 12:13

First and second pregnancies no morning sickness nothing at all easy pregnancies, very high sex drive until day before I went into labour, average bump no cravings could eat everything as normal both boys.
Third pregnancy nausea from 6 weeks, SPD, could only eat specific foods, iced water, sleepless nights, lower sex drive but stopped after 24 weeks due to SPD, average bump and baby girl born May of this year. The constant nausea until she was born made us suspect it was a girl. All three pregnancies were 'high'. Best of luck!

I had all the same symptoms and my PCOS consultant destroyed all my assumptions (though it did turn out to be a boy lol). Women with PCOS or insulin resistance are less likely to be sick during pregnancy. And if you find it more comfortable to sleep on your right then it probably means your baby is in the right position lol
Peanut91 · 21/07/2021 12:26

My pregnancies were both so different and I had boys both times but I has hideous nausea throughout with both.

With DS1 I carried around but carried out front with DS2. Went off everything sweet and only wanted savoury with DS1 but kept a sweet tooth throughout with DS2

ComDummings · 21/07/2021 12:28

I have had 2 children, a boy and a girl and my pregnancies were pretty much identical.

lolateddy · 21/07/2021 12:32

All my symptoms pointed to a girl. I pretty much assumed it was. Even midwife said 'oooo heartbeat sounds like a girl!'

Nope... Boy.

MissChanandlerBong22 · 21/07/2021 12:37

In my first pregnancy I was convinced it was a girl because of the heartbeat - the baby had a high heartbeat throughout. Also, at one of my appointments the consultant said the baby’s heart sounded like a gallop. Which is meant to mean a girl. He was a boy.

But that said I did have other ‘boy’ symptoms - nausea rather than full-blown sickness, lovely skin and hair, etc.

This time round I’m convinced it’s a girl. I’ve been really nauseous, had absolutely terrible skin (girls steal your beauty they say) and haven’t been able to sleep.

Bells3032 · 21/07/2021 12:39

I'm 12 weeks and know I'm having a girl due to harmony test. I have not had any sickness but lots of neseau. Craved salty feed and gone from meat lover to aversion.

Obv too early to say how I'm carrying. I had a very strong feeling its a girl. I had no idea why and it was surprising as my husbands family Is very male dominated so before I got pregnant I always said it would be a boy. But from the minute I found out I was pregnant I was convinced it was a girl and was right.

I was 😂 Absolutely convinced it was a boy but it’s a girl!

I’ve gone off sweet things, love salty and savoury, no sickness but 24/7 nausea, losing hair rather than gaining…! The only thing that’s true is I’m just thick across my middle so far, no real bump to speak of.

freckledsloth · 21/07/2021 13:31

No-cravings were more savoury, I had bad morning sickness and slept on my left side. Everyone at work was convinced I was having a boy from the shape/position of my bump and toward the end of my pregnancy I was covered in the most severe PUPP rash my midwife had ever seen (apparently more common if pregnant with a boy). I had a little girl.

Dyra · 21/07/2021 13:32

Boy "Symptoms"
Massively craved salt and vinegar crisps. Later on spaghetti and meatballs.
Slept on left. Normally sleep on front.
Occasional nausea. Only vomited a handful of times.
Chinese gender chart.
Nice skin. Or at least no spots. My psoriasis cleared up too.
Carried high and in front.
Slept amazingly well (other than the 2am pregnancy wee)
Sure I was having a boy.

Girl "Symptoms"
Fast heartbeat
Became very, very, very sure I was having a girl at 36 weeks.

Baby was a girl.

SheABitSpicyToday · 21/07/2021 13:33

I have all girl symptoms and am having a boy. With my girl I had all boy symptoms.

FogHornInTheAttic · 21/07/2021 13:37

I went big all over and craved meat and had a boy

Katefoster · 21/07/2021 14:51

I'm 21 weeks pregnant and not finding out the sex. I've had minimal sickness (boy) then I was craving sweet (girl) then savoury (boy) but the biggest thing for me is I'm carrying all over not jsut my bump, my bump is really small but I'm carrying everywhere! So I'm kinda 50/50 and I go between thinking it's a boy and a girl I've got no idea 😂

Newmum110 · 21/07/2021 15:04

32 weeks & fully convinced it's a girl, will be some shock if it's a boy. Just felt it was a girl from day 1

Nat4392 · 21/07/2021 15:58

I didn’t know what I was having and had a little girl a few weeks back. Most old wives tales were right for me. I craved sweet things, had awful sickness, didn’t feel glowy. But the Chinese gender chart was wrong and I carried all at the front, so a bit hit and miss!

HotPotatoHotPotato21 · 21/07/2021 19:17

Ah see I've read bad skin means a girl due to the extra hormones. I've had awful skin this pregnancy and we're having a girl. Boy pregnancy my skin was great! No morning sickness either pregnancy.
Not really had any cravings this pregnancy, with my son I was crazy for dairy; lots of ice cream, milkshakes and yoghurts!
Chinese calendar has been correct for both of mine too!

Flutterby8 · 21/07/2021 21:38

Not sure if I fit the mold or not!
Have had severe morning (or all day sickness) since week 5 and ended up on medication for finally diagnosed Hyperemesis.
Exhausted as in, fall asleep at 7pm.
Big weight loss due to hyperemesis.
No cravings until week 19 where I wanted sweet drinks like coke or huge pots of yogurt.
Ive been convinced, and so has everyone who knows Im pregnant, that Im carrying a boy. Even though I think my bump is quite high.
But found she is a little girl.
Im still in shock to be honest!

katsounds · 21/07/2021 21:42

I was sick as a dog both times. For the whole pregnancy.

I have 2 boys.

MrsGxx · 22/07/2021 01:45

Ds1- craved salty foods, was sick every evening without fail, carried all over, I gained so much weight.

Ds2 - currently pregnant with.
Craving sweet and salty and I have been so much more sick with this pregnancy, awful food aversions, headaches etc.

Everybody I know who’s having boys seem to be more sick. X
