Is it normal to think that when someone announces their pregnancy- even when being extremely happy for the couple?

@whatinthenameofhen

When people say they are 'trying' - yes I think that. When they announce preg I count back to work out the month of conception. Also when I had my second child a colleague said "oh I've just realised you've had sex with xxxx at least twice.' Bit weird but it is just a fleeting thought!
I'm not sure whether you or your colleague emerge as weirder here. As you are old enough to have had at least two children, you are presumably long past the age of discovering about Daddy and Mummy Special Cuddles etc...?

I think I remember doing this. When I was about eight and my friend Deirdre Quinn had just filled me in on the details of sex.

TiddyAndFletch · 14/07/2021 18:02

No. I sometimes idly think about them finding out - looking at a pregnancy test, how they reacted etc. But I'd assume a couple of child-bearing age would be having sex anyway, so I wouldn't think of that any more than I'd think of it seeing a couple who weren't expecting a baby - i.e. only if one of them is interesting enough to make me wonder what they'd be like in bed.

I once said this to my mum as a child/teen. As in, "isn't it weird to think that when people announce they're pregnant, they're also sort of announcing, 'we had sex!'?"

My mum did look at me a bit strangely, though...Grin

whatinthenameofhen · 14/07/2021 18:05

Ye I'm a bit weird at times!!

That's more than a bit weird Confused

Carrott21 · 14/07/2021 18:09

Yes definitely Grin.

hellywelly3 · 14/07/2021 18:12

I do! Also when people say their trying to get pregnant, it’s like saying we’re having lots of unprotected sex!

OlivesTree · 14/07/2021 18:14

No, but I did feel a bit awkward about announcing my pregnancy to my Dad as he would know that I had had sex with my husband (of 5 years). Grin

Tiddlywinkly · 14/07/2021 18:14

No, but when I was pregnant and working out at the gym I remember getting a fair few pervy stares from some guys. I'm not sure if it was a fetish thing or a, I know you've had sex thing. Either way, it was unpleasant.

WallaceinAnderland · 14/07/2021 18:18

Try teaching sex ed in primary school when you're visibly pregnant. That moment when the penny drops...

EmergencyHydrangea · 14/07/2021 18:20

Well I kind of assume that most grown ups at some point have had sex.

🤣

MushroomQueen · 14/07/2021 18:23

@WallaceinAnderland Grin

No can't say I have

LunaNorth · 14/07/2021 18:23

I hate it when people announce they are ‘trying’. I can’t help but picture them shagging with looks of intense concentration on their faces. Hideous.

Siepie · 14/07/2021 18:24

I thought that when someone who had always talked about waiting until marriage announced her pregnancy with her fairly new boyfriend.

Generally no. It’s hardly a surprise that a grown up couple is having sex.

This, haha. I don't need to know.
Ifitquacks · 14/07/2021 18:27

No, because it’s pretty much a given that adults in a relationship are having sex.

Wide · 14/07/2021 18:27

Absolutely I literally always say it's the first thing I think of especially if they look quiet and I can't imagine them. I felt it telling my parents too when I was pregnant. If anyone says I'm immature then I really do not care, I quite like being intrigued by unsuspecting people having sex 😂

55378OO8 · 14/07/2021 18:29

No but when I told my parents that I was pregnant it did cross my mind that they would know that I had had sex with dp (of 15 years Grin)

Mylittlesandwich · 14/07/2021 18:32

When I told my mum I was pregnant part of me did think oh no! She knows we've had sex. We'd been married 6 years but this was the first actual confirmation haha.

Chelyanne · 14/07/2021 18:33

Yeah it is a bit weird. Couples often have lots of sex, if they're lucky lol

Thefaceofboe · 14/07/2021 18:37

No I don’t. But I did blush when I admitted to my mum and dad we had been trying for over 2 years to get pregnant and then thought oh great now my dad knows I’ve been having sex regularly Grin

tickingthebox73 · 14/07/2021 18:43

I've had a few people announce "we are trying for a baby" and I think - oh my, you've just announced you are at it like rabbits....Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 14/07/2021 18:45

When our bullish, sexist, horrendously vile MD announced his wife was pregnant I did shudder at the thought of him having sex with someone.

PlumpCushion · 14/07/2021 18:49

Well actually I think it’s weird to find the thought weird! We all have automatic thoughts all the time about all sorts of things. The posters who are saying it’s weird are being ridiculous. It’s simply a question of following a train of thought. Totally, totally normal thing to do.
