What does a UTI feel like?

Hi all
I’m 22 weeks and this morning I keep feeling I need a wee which isn’t anything new! However I keep having a spasmy burny pain in my bladder (I know it’s my bladder rather than my uterus because it’s basically right on my bikini line where I can feel if I need a wee)
I don’t feel unwell but don’t feel great either, I feel quite sick (on cyclizine) and achy. I don’t have a temp. I’m a nurse and my lft are negative.
Could this be a UTI? I don’t want to go to triage and waste their time but the pain is quite jabby. It doesn’t hurt to wee too much, just a bit I suppose. Thanks!!

This sounds like a urine infection to me. They only get worse in my experience! Get some cranberry juice and call triage.

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 10:36

Wouldn’t I feel poorly or have a temp though? (I am a nurse but in a very specialised area so no experience of UTIs and worried I’ll look an idiot if I go and it’s just the baby on my bladder or something!)

Nope. I've had a uti around 5-10 times in my life and I never had a temperature or felt unwell with it.

MoreAloneTime · 11/07/2021 10:39

That's pretty much what I get with them, I've never had a temperature or felt sick.

Muststopeating · 11/07/2021 10:40

I've only had 1 and had it at 3.5 weeks pregnant (it was the first sign I was pregnant).

It started feeling like I still needed to wee even straight after I'd just had a wee. I can't describe how uncomfortable that feeling was.

I went for the, drink lots of water and it'll be fine approach (didn't know I was pregnant). Don't do that! It progressed quickly and within 2 days I was bleeding, had a temperature and felt terrible (fluey). Called GP and got antibiotics (had to call back 2 days later after I did a pregnancy test and get different ones).

You don't need to call triage for a UTI. I'd ask the pharmacist to test (they won't prescribe for you as you're pregnant but they should be able to do a dip stick test). Or call your GP?

SweatyBetty20 · 11/07/2021 10:44

I’ve had two - the second one I did have a temperature. Felt like I always wanted to pee, even after I’d just been, and goodness it burned. I drank absolutely loads of water and used those sachets from the pharmacist - add them to water and neck it down. Think you have three a day for two days - obvs check with the pharmacist if you can use them if you are pregnant.

Notaroadrunner · 11/07/2021 10:46

From my own personal experience, you wouldn't necessarily have a temperature with it straight away. The worst one I had gave me pain in my side/back but it was kidney pain, as opposed to bladder, and I did have a temperature. Or I'd feel a pain when peeing when the bladder was emptying - so much so I'd hate having to go to the loo as I knew the pain was imminent. Milder ones I've had would give a stinging sensation when peeing and very little coming out. Cranberry juice never helped me. I used to take a cranberry tablet as soon as I felt any sensation, and drink lots of water. You might be able to take cystopurin which should be available otc. If it does develop into a full blown kidney infection where you could have blood in your urine you'll most likely need an antibiotic. Best thing is to bring a sample to get tested. While pregnant you can't be too careful and it's better to go and it be nothing than not go and end up in a worse state later on this evening.

EdithGrantham · 11/07/2021 10:48

I've recently found out that I can make an online request for non-urgent stuff at my drs surgery so may be worth seeing if you can do that and request a urine test rather than trying to get an appointment

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 10:54

I’m just really really uncomfortable which is why I posted tbh. I go for a wee and then I feel like I need to wee straight away and I have a burny stabby feeling down there. It’s really uncomfortable!! I’m not in agony. Am going to have a big glass of water and then phone triage I guess if it doesn’t go off. The urgent care centre said they won’t see me as I’m pregnant they would want me seen by the maternity doctors rather than themselves.

Do not leave it. Do a urine sample and get it tested.

I dismissed my UTI as worsening spd.

I was getting slower and slower walking and having a lot more hip pain, it felt like baby was getting lower down with pressure pain. It was uncomfortable at the end of a wee and I felt the need to go straight after too but this was days after 1st symptoms. Got so bad, walking was bringing me to tears and every move baby made was painful too. At it's very worst I got tightenings and it felt like I was going in to pre-term labour. Mine was quite advanced but the meds they gave me started to work quickly and after a week I was back walking the dog and deadlifting in the gym. I will not be dismissing the early signs again!!

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 11:27

I thought it was spd too!!! I have phoned and they’re going to see me today. I am in a fair bit of pain now Sad

Good luck! I've had several UTIs before pregnancy and you are describing exactly what I recognize. If it's confirmed though, in my experience antibiotics work fast and you should feel a lot better very soon. They're nasty things.

shivawn · 11/07/2021 12:11

I've had 2 UTI's during this pregnancy already and I've had no symptoms at all with either one.

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 12:53

I’m at the hospital now. I’m in agony in the space of a few hours Sad

When I had finished my wee, I had a funny sensation as if my bladder was emptying from top to bottom. I also had frequency. It was only when I had loin pain that I realised it was a UTI.
I assumed the funny sensation in the bladder was a peri menopause symptom.

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 13:46

I have blood in my urine and a temperature so they do think I have a UTI and I’m so much pain Shock thank you for helping me decide to come to the hospital x

It's awful how fast it progresses. They will get you sorted with some meds and have you feeling better soon. Rest up and I wish you a speedy recovery Smile

EdithGrantham · 11/07/2021 14:15

Gosh I'm glad you didn't take my advice!! Shock Hope you get sorted soon Flowers

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 14:27

I can’t believe I was fine this morning and I’m now lying in a hospital bed with my bladder on fire!! I’m waiting for a dr.

Notaroadrunner · 11/07/2021 14:42

Hope they can sort you asap. You did the right thing by calling them.

cookiecreampie · 11/07/2021 14:46

I've only ever had this once. I drank bottle after bottle of water and it went. It is so uncomfortable though, not feeling like you get the relief after a wee.

opinionminion · 11/07/2021 14:46

I really hope you start to feel better very soon. For info. cranberry juice is only a preventative, it's absolutely no good whatsoever whilst you are in the throes of a UTI (last thing your bladder needs is acidity)
Thanks

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 17:42

I am home now and on antibiotics
However the pain (which I think is bladder spasms) is really quite severe and scaring me a bit Sad this is my third pregnancy so I’m kind of an expert (this is a joke!!) but I’ve never had anything like this before. Can UTIs cause bladder spasms?

OP posts:
Chelyanne · 11/07/2021 17:57

@Kittyswhiskers it will all be related, just try to rest and give the antibiotics chance to get working.
I'm on 5th pregnancy to do well and was very surprised at how intense the pain was with the UTI as I'd not had anything like it before. 2 doses of my antibiotics and I started to feel relief from it, rested as much as I could with 5 kids and no support. A week later back to normal and could actually enjoy pregnancy again (well mostly, the spd still a pain). I found sitting on a cold pack helped, you can pop a hot water bottle in the freezer for a bit if you don't have a gel type one.

Kittyswhiskers · 11/07/2021 18:11

Thank you so much for your reply. I’ve downed 500mls water and am lying on the bed listening to my kids cause chaos downstairs with my husband and trying not to stress!! I can take another antibiotic tonight and I really hope I can sleep because the pain is so intense. I will never dismiss a simple UTI ever again!!
