Two of my aunties - 46 and 47 - both thought they were in menopause but weren’t.

My grandmother had the last of her (14!) children at 44 (she had twins at 40, too!).

@Ultimatecougar

Known personally, 46. My friend who is a midwife has seen a natural pregnancy at 50. The woman thought she was menopausal.

Its worth bearing in mind however, that often older pregnancies you hear about from previous generations were mother's covering up their teenage daughters accidental pregnancies by pretending the child was theirs.

Good point - that happened to a friend of mine she found out her sister was her mother!

I think the difference is if when people have never had children before so not so likely to when a person has had several children and has a later one too. An already fertile woman producing another since lots of eggs still ok and not reached menopause which of course is different ages for all women.

My mum had my younger sister at 46.

  1. A kid in DS1's class. His mum was convinced she was in menopause. Conceived at 55, delivered at 56.

Your grandmother sounds like one hell of a woman! Makes me feel weak & weepy just thinking about that! Shock I can barely manage 2 teen ds at 48 Grin

My partner has a colleague who says his mother had her first baby when she was 16 and her last when she was 58. (This would have been well before the days of IVF.) He comes across as a very believable person but it does seem incredible.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 09/07/2021 09:13

My friend was 51 and a grandma.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/07/2021 09:16

My great aunt - 46 and thought it was menopause, 15 years after her 4th child was born.

LovelyGirlCompetition · 09/07/2021 09:23

My Nan had 9 children (that lived). Her youngest was the same age as my brother so she would have been nearly 50. I remember my mum saying while she was pregnant with my brother, she was scrubbing the kitchen floor and Nan came in, took the brush off her and did it, saying she shouldn't be doing that while pregnant. They were both pregnant!

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 09/07/2021 09:24

Is it still the case that there are more pregnancies and terminations in wonem over 40 than there are in those under 20? That's the statistic I heard a few years ago.

Nuffaluff · 09/07/2021 09:44
  1. It was my grandmother. It wasn’t planned as she already had three much older children.
applestamper · 09/07/2021 09:49

48, in the 1950s, first and only child.

RavenclawsRoar · 09/07/2021 10:39
  1. I do know someone else who had a baby at 45 but don't know whether they had fertility treatment.
sqirrelfriends · 09/07/2021 10:57

48, my grandmother. I never knew her unfortunately but she was a wonderful woman.

I also know someone who had all 3 children in her 40's, the last at 47.

Babyghirl · 09/07/2021 11:08

Liz Earl had her last at 47. Found out at 15weeks as she thought she was going through menopause

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/07/2021 11:27

My Dad's cousin had her first period and then conceived her first baby at nearly 50. She had been told she couldn't have children so had adopted two years earlier. All was well with pregnancy and birth.
