Am I having a miscarriage?

It won’t let me post any photos, or if so how do I do it?
I am 6 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I went for a pee 3 nights ago and when I wiped there was brown discharge. It has been happening since. I am having cramps in my lower back and stomach. The early pregnant unit says it sounds normal but I am not convinced at all.

I went for a bath and when I stood up brown liquid with what I can describe as granules of brown came out. No giant clots. Just small. This is my first baby and I don’t want to lose it. What is everyone’s thoughts? Has anyone experienced this and not had a miscarriage?

Coffee granule bleeding can be a sign of an ectopic. I'd request an urgent scan x

HereWeGoAgain24 · 02/07/2021 17:49

Definitely call EPU again, request a scan. Bleeding and pain would concern me and like a PP said you should rule out ectopic.

Good luck I hope everything is ok xx

Abbys1 · 02/07/2021 18:04

I posted on healthunlocked with pictures. It’s not an eptopic as I had a scan last week to make sure the baby was In the right place.

It’s like running brown discharge/blood. Occasional bits in it but small dots like porridge if that makes sense? X

Did they detect a heartbeat at last scan?

Abbys1 · 02/07/2021 18:19

@toadstool32 no, I was only 5 weeks at last scan. I am now 6 weeks, 4 days x

I'll be honest with you & say it can go either way. People often say on here brown discharge is old blood & nothing to worry about, but when I had a mc at 7 weeks last year all I'd had was brown spotting.

However, in my current pregnancy I had brown, pink & red bleeding throughout my first trimester & was convinced I was losing it each time. I've just had my 20 week scan today & everything was perfect.

Really hoping it's a good outcome for you 🌺

Abbys1 · 02/07/2021 18:28

@JackJack84 is there any way I can send you some images? I’ve no idea if it’s normal and early pregnancy is being a nightmare and don’t want to scan me too early. I have booked one for Sunday privately but can’t stop my mind wondering if I’m losing it. X

Request an hcg blood test from your GP

Rosesareyellow · 02/07/2021 18:57

We can’t tell you the answer. As a pp said for some it common, others not. For me it wouldn’t be a good sign - I’ve only bled with an ectopic and a miscarriage. Contact your EPU again.

Rosesareyellow · 02/07/2021 18:59

I’m surprised they won’t see you if you’re having pain as well. When I had my ectopic (it was caught early) and experienced light bleeding and cramps I phoned my GP and they told me to go straight to A and E.

I can't give you an answer, no one on here can unfortunately. I know the waiting is torture, I had to wait 2 weeks to see if I was miscarrying last year & every minute was hell.

I'm sorry EPU are being so awkward with you, luckily my local trust has an open door policy but I know different trusts have different rules. Just try & distract yourself as much as you can between now & Sunday. I had to just pretend like none of it was happening otherwise I would've lost the plot.

I just wanted to offer a handhold.

Being pregnant is very exciting, but sadly it also means living in uncertainty for long stretches of time, which is really hard. The only thing we can do is keep to the guidelines to try to protect our babies (no alcohol and all that), listen to our own bodies and seek medical attention when we are concerned, and just hope we are among the lucky ones who get to take their babies home.

I have had two losses (no living children yet), and see any new pregnancy as a 'this could be a possible baby', not a 'this is a guaranteed baby'. Sadly, you need to protect your own heart and sanity a little, as difficult as it sounds, especially until the 12 week scan.

PinPointer · 02/07/2021 19:08

I had brown bleeds on off till I was 14 weeks and am now 37, call EPU and see if you can get a follow up scan in a week for peace of mind though, fingers crossed all goes well

Eleoura · 02/07/2021 19:11

Sorry you are going through this. I've had 3 mc's and all of them started with brown spotting, that eventually progressed to bleeding. Many women do have some spotting and can have a healthy pregnancy, but it could go either way. No one on here can say, and there is no need for pictures of your bleeding! I'd contact a different EPU or speak to your GP for a Hcg blood test or book a private scan. Best of luck x

@Eleoura did you have gas? I have a lot of gas. My breasts are still so sore to touch. It’s when I go to the toilet I have brown spotting. Or when I pass gas. Or squeeze. X

Trinacham · 02/07/2021 19:43

I've had brown spotting on and off since 6 weeks. At 8 weeks it progressed to red blood and cramping for a couple of hours. Went for a scan 3 days later and baby was fine and confirmed the heartbeat. Still brown spotting on and off, now 9 weeks. As people have said, it cam go either way. No reason to show pictures, as brown spotting can be normal, but can also mean it'll progress and be bad news. It is hard, but it is a waiting game.

Trinacham · 02/07/2021 19:45

I get most brown spotting when I strain to go the the loo too - that is quite common.

Abbys1 · 02/07/2021 19:50

@Trinacham are you or had you been cramping? Mine is mostly my lower back but it comes and goes. It feels like period pain very very mild left hand side at the current moment x

OP posts:
Trinacham · 02/07/2021 19:56

I had the cramping when I was bleeding the red blood. When I'm having the brown spotting I don't really cramp. Cramping can definitely just be things stretching and growing though. Unless it progresses to red blood and bad cramps, try not to worry. Easier said than done I know, as I've been there. Even with the cramps and red blood, baby was fine on my scan, so it still doesn't always mean bad news. Never knew early pregnancy would be such a rollercoaster of emotions!

Maggiesfarm · 02/07/2021 19:58

Please do seek medical advice again, Abbys. I hope all is well but you need reassurance at least.

Good luck.

Abbys1 · 02/07/2021 20:09

@Trinacham I agree, it’s hard! I’m fingers crossed. I still feel acid reflux and my breasts still hurt but I’m not as nauseous today like I was yesterday.

My thighs are sore and my back. I’m praying it’s not a miscarriage but I know somethings wrong with my own body. It’s just a shame EPU won’t see me. They can’t do anything if it was but it’s heart wrenching sitting in the unknown.

Not one person I know has had any form of spotting so it’s scaring me more x

OP posts:
Trinacham · 02/07/2021 20:16

@Abbys1 you probably don't know that many people who've had spotting, because it is only about 20% of people who do. I am one of those though! They couldn't see anything on my scan to blame for the bleeding, so i can only guess it is my cervix, which I think makes sense with the spotting being mainly after straining. X

Eleoura · 02/07/2021 20:16

@Abbys1- I don't recall any more gas than normal. With my 1st MC, I had no cramping or pain initially, but when the cervix started to open, I did. With the 2nd MC, I had no pain at all- just spotting. I went to work thinking it was 'just spotting' and I was painfree. Unfortunately I MC'd at work! The 3rd one, I spotted for 3 days, until the bleeding got heavier and then the cramping started. best of luck though Flowers

Shortmamashortcycles · 02/07/2021 20:18

Oh love... I've been where you are - for me, I had a huge cramp and a big gush of red blood at 5+4. I was at work, called 111, dashed to A&E in floods of tears and eventually got a transvaginal scan which showed no reason for the bleed and a healthy little heartbeat.

I asked if I was miscarrying and I was told that if the bleeding continued, I should come back to A&E and if it stopped it was probably good news. So I went home and sat on the couch for 2 days alternating between crying and checking whether I was still bleeding.

In my case, by that evening the bleeding had become brown spotting that disappeared after a couple of days and I had a healthy little girl 8 months later.

However, it could easily have been bad news - there is no combination of symptoms that will give you any clues before Sunday.

I know it's hard, but my advice would be to get off mumsnet, order your favourite takeaway, curl up on the couch with your favourite movie or book and get loved ones to cuddle you until Sunday. You just need to breathe through this, minute by minute.

Sending you all the good vibes I can muster, good luck!
