5w2d Ultrasound

I had an ultrasound yesterday at 5 weeks + 2 days (or 23 dpo)

On the picture the doctor printed all that can be seen is the gestational sac. No yolk sac, fetal pole. No heartbeat... Sad

All he said was it's very small (11mm according to his measurements) but normal for 5w+2d and to come back 10 days later.

Is it still to early to see anything? Wouldn't at least the yolk sac be visible at this stage?

If you had an early scan at 5 weeks or so, what were you able to see?

I couldn't see anything at my 5w scan op.
7 weeks there was a baby and HB! It's very early!

Pr1ncessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 25/06/2021 08:59

Were you five weeks exactly? It seems that each day matters!

I read so many posts about people hearing the heartbeat at 5 and half weeks i feel disheartened. Sad

I was 5+2.
Whilst it's possible to see HB etc at 5 weeks it's also more common not too. They are so teeny tiny right now.
Early scans are always best 7w onwards.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease...a little.

That’s a very early ultrasound! With my DS, I had an ultrasound at 6w, and there was no visible heartbeat. Went back 10 days later, and it was there.

anotherwinkywinkybumbum · 25/06/2021 09:13

Why did you go for a scan? I'm surprised they didn't give you more reassurance that this looks like a typical scan for that gestation. Sorry you're worrying Flowers

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 25/06/2021 09:17

The very, very earliest a heart rate can be detected is 5+5, but more commonly not until 6 weeks plus.

There is really no point in a scan at 5+2. It provides no information on the viability or otherwise of a pregnancy. If a private scan place took your money for a scan knowing you were at that gestation, arguably they scammed you.

Garman · 25/06/2021 09:34

That's an incredibly early scan, was there a reason for such an early one? Most places recommend waiting until 6/7 weeks to see a heartbeat.

bookh · 25/06/2021 09:39

Incredibly early. Here speaks someone who has had into double figure losses. I was never, ever scanned before 7 weeks. In this area nobody would be. Even last pregnancy where I carried to full term I had a bleed at five weeks. I called EPU as it was first lockdown and I wanted to know what I was dealing with. Date of last period given, no scan till seven weeks.

BigfatJ · 25/06/2021 09:41

I didn’t even see the heartbeat at my baby’s 9 week scan. They were moving around so we knew they were ok.

You shouldn’t have been scanned at 5+2 that’s insane really

The reason was that I'm over 40 I guess? Also I'm in Japan, so things are probably different here. There were to appointments available when I called: On June 23rd or July 13th. They let me pick. I guess in hindsight I should have picked the latter...

*two appointments

I guess my concern at this point is less about the heartbeat (since it's so early) and more about the lack of yolk sac or anything inside that black bubble.
I would have felt better if I saw a "tiny white smudge" somewhere in there..

With respect, OP, this is why nowhere reputable will give a scan at 5+2. It's impossible to learn anything positive or of use, and now you're all upset and freaked out when you didn't need to be.

It was a normal scan at this gestation, which is to say you couldn't see anything. You just have to give it time.

Moominmiss · 25/06/2021 10:14

I had a scan at 5+4 at the EPU due to several previous miscarriages, and we were very lucky to see a heartbeat. BUT I was told how lucky I was and that it’s rare to see so early.
As the sonographer was starting scan me she was saying how I wasn’t to panic if we didn’t get to see much, if anything, and that would be totally normal. Then we saw it and she measured it at 5+4.
You only need to read a few threads on here though to see the vast majority really don’t see much at all until over 6 weeks. Usually nearer to 6+5 or more.

So as hard as it sounds please don’t worry. If you have no other reason to suspect something isn’t right, then the chances are when you return you will get to see a tiny flicker!

Pr1ncessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 25/06/2021 11:49

Looking at my line progression (or lack thereof) is doing nothing to ease my fears... 😔

Um, there's really no darker those lines can get. There is only so much dye in one of those things.

You're going to make yourself totally nuts. You are pregnant. Just give it time.

It’s so early, I would never go before 6 weeks absolute minimum. Hope all is well.

Ughmaybenot · 25/06/2021 12:25

I’m sorry you’re feeling so worried but honestly it is still so, so early! I’m not really surprised that they couldn’t see anything. Also, as someone has said upthread, there’s only so dark a line on a pregnancy test can get, and you’re at that point! You’ll drive yourself mad keep testing and testing.

dg93 · 25/06/2021 12:28

I had a 5 week scan 2 days ago and nothing at all could be seen - yours shows more than mine! X

What did your OB have to say about it? They said it was fine? Mine didn't really say anything other than "it's still small"... Hmm

Yeah I guess I just need to chill until the next appointment... Easier said than done.Wink

Oh OP

I say this with compassion I really do - stop peeing on sticks, having scans, looking up things on google, even posting on forums about pregnancy for the next 10 days minimum. It's still sooo early and you're getting all upset and worried about a situation that neither you or any decent obstetrician can do anything about.

I'd say go and have a glass of wine or 2 but that wouldn't be a good idea Grin.
