Just had a sweep today. I'm already 3cm dilated. Anyone else the same? Or does anyone else have any stories to tell me? How long did it take? Did it actually work?

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE

Good luck op!

Not much going on here

When are you due to be checked again? It's so frustrating when you know things are happening on the inside but slowly

I have everything crossed for you.

I'm just back from midwife I'm 3cm still but can be stretched to 5. Hopefully not much longer for us GrinGrin

That sounds positive! I've been trying to nap while my toddler was asleep but keep getting cramps. Going to get some stuff done and see if they continue

Mylasmummy2102 · 24/06/2021 15:01

Had 2 sweeps with my 1st they did absolutely nothing with my 2nd I had one sweep at 41 weeks and went into Labour that night but not convinced it was that that actually done it I'm now 39 weeks with my third they will offer me one at 41 weeks again but probably won't have it x

krj2688 · 24/06/2021 16:02

With my first

I had my sweep at 1pm, by 3pm the contractions started but irregular. In labour by 12midnight and had my son at 7am. Was really quite for me and a simple birth too.

Good luck!

Fitforforty · 24/06/2021 16:35

You don’t have to do have induction. You can opt for daily monitoring but there are risks to both options.

grey12 · 25/06/2021 04:15

@Fitforforty my personal experience is that I had to fight HARD for monitoring. Even with history of healthy overdue pregnancies. And still they broke the waters when I was in established labour and it went horrible.... I expected better of the NHS Sad

I didn't need it in the end but was going to opt for monitoring and my midwives were very supportive (and actually seemed quite pleased with my decision!). I think it must just be luck of the draw!

How are you getting on?

OP posts:
THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 25/06/2021 11:20

I am still having some cramping but nothing is getting stronger or more regular

More than 48 hours post sweep now and feeling disheartened!

Anyone know how many cm you need to be for waters to be broken?

Fitforforty · 25/06/2021 11:32

I know you don’t want induction but it sounds like things are on the way naturally and induction will just speed up that process. Stress inhibits labours so as difficult as it is try not to stress about the induction.

I'm sure it's around 3cm but it depends if baby is engaged or not. They couldn't break mine as he was slightly too high.

I am starting to think about refusing the balloon induction (only method on offer) So maybe i would go in and if they can't break my waters i will have another sweep and go home. The thought of being stuck doing nothing with the balloon in is whats stressing me out

LisaLx · 25/06/2021 13:43

What is the balloon method? Is this a new thing?

OP posts:
BurningBenches · 25/06/2021 14:05

@LisaLx its a catheter they put in to dilate your cervix. I think it must be newish as it wasnt offered with my others (2000, 2011, 2019) its supposed to be less stressful on baby.

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE might vary on area in terms of what they do but i was 3cm (stretched to 4) the day before my induction and they said that was too dilated for the balloon, so gave me a sweep. Contractions started the following morning while waiting to get induced.

In terms of when they would just break waters, for me with DC4 I was 1-2 and they broke them. With this one 3-4cm. With DC3 and 4 neither were engaged when they broke them. I remember feeling mild panic as they did it. This one was 3/5.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 25/06/2021 14:14

My notes from my sweep have baby at -2 station so not engaged but subsequent babies tend not to engage before labour don't they. Glad to see you had waters broken without being engaged @BurningBenches. From what i have read online the balloon falls out around 3cm so explains why you didn't need it!

Nutellamummy · 25/06/2021 16:02

Im 40 weeks today with DD1! Head has been engaged for 2 weeks and have 1st sweep booked tomorrow. Very nervous and have been very torn whether to have it or not. Been having lightning crotch pains but not lost plug or any other signs - hoping sweep works tomorrow 🙏🏼

Good luck for tomorrow. I can't offer any advice as I've never had one until this pregnancy and I'm already dilating. It defiantly wasn't as sore as I thought Infact I wouldn't describe it as painful just a little uncomfortable but you can tell them to stop at anytime. Maybe take some paracetamol before hand it can leave some intense cramps afterwards

@LisaLx Good advice! So many different experiences, glad you're dilating though and didn't find it painful. Hope you see more good results soon 😆
