I do the same as you @CherLW and have a pint of water with / after every meal! Am very hydrated 🤣

Finally got through to the midwife yesterday about my high lunch readings and whether missing the mid morning snack could be the culprit. Luckily they've been in range since reintroducing the snack. I guess it works on the same principle as a late night snack to help fasting readings. She said that if you go a while without eating and get too hungry your liver produces sugar which can cause a spike. Thought that was interesting.

Anyway she wasn't concerned about the high readings so no change for now. Finally have my first growth scan and consultant appointment on Thursday which I wish would hurry up and get here already!

Firevie · 13/07/2021 11:47

Hi there! Just had a growth scan at 26+4. Baby is looking perfect and weighs 1kg which is perfect for his age. I’ll have my next growth scan on 27th July when I’ll be 28+5

bewitchingnight · 13/07/2021 12:21

@Firevie brilliant news!

AdventuresAwait · 13/07/2021 12:40

That's great @Firevie! Xx

Firevie · 13/07/2021 13:04

Thank you @bewitchingnight and @AdventuresAwait 🥰 now braving lunch - scrambled eggs with spinach and spring onions and feta, protein bagel with butter, and then a 40mins walk and I’ll make sure to drink a pint of water with my lunch x

AdventuresAwait · 13/07/2021 15:16

Wow sounds great! You've got this @Firevie! Xx

Firevie · 13/07/2021 15:24

Thanks so much for your kind words @AdventuresAwait
@CherLW tried your tip and drank a pint of water with my lunch and then walked 40mins after. Lunch reading was 6.2. I’m happy with that.
OH is making dinner today - chicken curry and I’ll have a bit of brown rice on the side plus some lettuce and cucumber on the side. Will do the same again and drink 1pint of water with my meal. Xx

CherLW · 13/07/2021 15:47

@Firevie excellent news on the after lunch reading 😊. I struggle with the water sometimes just because of the amount of times I already use the loo but if it keeps my numbers down I’m happy.
Glad to hear about your growth scan 😊

I called the MAU today because I haven’t been feeling him move very much. She said ‘have a snickers or a Mars bar’ I WISH!! I said about the GD and she said try something cold and something sugary but not too sugary 🙈 I had a sugar free ice pop and a snack size Milky Way which seem to have done the trick and got him moving again! He’s missing the sugary treats just like me!

AdventuresAwait · 13/07/2021 15:53

Ahh glad you got your little boy moving @CherLW! xx

I've really started missing treats the last couple of days. Might have to start that post- birth list like some of you have mentioned!

CherLW · 13/07/2021 15:59

Thanks @AdventuresAwait it’s so worrying isn’t it when you can’t feel much! I’m just glad he’s wiggling about now!

Definitely do a list! I add to mine all the time 😂 my mum is going to be my birthing partner and i have let her know a few things she could bring in when she comes to visit after!
Lately ive been non stop thinking of that Cadbury’s chocolate with the sweets in it.. something creations 😍

Firevie · 13/07/2021 15:59

@CherLW thank you ☺️
Ah glad you got him moving
It’s certainly a change for our little ones just like for us. Mine had to adjust to our new diet and lifestyle too lol
I’ve been feeling the urge for chocolate today but nope can’t do.
Apparently there’s some Oppo ice cream which is supposed to be good for GD? I may get some next time I’m near an M&S

CherLW · 13/07/2021 16:07

I’ll have a look for that @Firevie i feel like ice cream will definitely be needed to cool down with is the summer is going to be a hot one!

AdventuresAwait · 13/07/2021 16:16

I hadn't heard of Oppo ice cream so just looked it up. It looks great @Firevie, thanks!

Firevie · 13/07/2021 16:39

Enjoy ladies! I got the tip off the GD FB group x

Confused I'm absolutely not writing this to scare monger but this is not best practice. Babies should move the same amount regardless of your diet. Ten years ago I would definitely have said what your midwife said. I absolutely would not now.

Please keep an eye on fetal movements and call straight away (like you did) if you are worried.

Also re: pasta. You can lower the GI if you wash it, cook it, rapid cool it and reheat it. A faff but there you go. Daffodil

bewitchingnight · 13/07/2021 17:00

@CherLW ah glad he was moving about later on!

@Firevie sounds like a great day of food and good readings too!

@AdventuresAwait oh I'm with you, the cravings are becoming intense and I'm definitely starting to feel a bit deprived!

Has anyone thought about what snacks to pack in their hospital bag? All the usual suggestions aren't very GD friendly! I thought peanut butter and some oatcakes but I'm stuck after that for things that don't need to go in the fridge

CherLW · 13/07/2021 17:05

Thank you @AgathaMystery it’s good to have other opinions too 😊. I’m going to keep a close eye on them for the rest of the evening and I’ll definitely call back if I worry again. I have an anterior placenta which sometimes is a pain as it’s such a barrier. I think it’s harder as I haven’t really noticed any real pattern yet 😕

CherLW · 13/07/2021 17:08

@bewitchingnight I was told to check with my midwife as they might be able to put things in a fridge. If they do then I saw things like baby bell, yogurts and fridge raiders, nuts, seeds, crisps, trek protein bars, Granny Smiths.
The website I saw said take a pot of peanut butter incase they offer toast, even take your own bread… I guess to make a peanut butter sandwich.

bewitchingnight · 13/07/2021 17:33

@CherLW oh thank you, I'll try and find out about the fridge, that would make things easier! I'll look out for those cereal bars, I haven't tried any because I just assumed they'd be too sweet!

Bubbles1st · 13/07/2021 17:53

@Moominmiss my consultant skipped metformin for my fasting levels and said it often doesn't help and leads to wasted time, so I went straight on insulin.

I've been on it 4 weeks, upping units every few days as it's still not being my levels down.... so not sure how it's better than the metformin of it still isn't working!

I've had tenge occasional in target fasting, unsure if it's fluke or snack related as no real pattern.

I am on metformin at breakfast though and my side effects (lots of toilet trips!) only lasted one day. Thank god!

AdventuresAwait · 13/07/2021 17:57

@Moominmiss, I'm on metformin with breakfast and dinner & insulin (10 units) at bedtime for fasting levels, which worked very quickly. I had some gas and stomach pain for the first couple of days on metformin but was fine after that.

Moominmiss · 13/07/2021 18:02

@Bubbles1st after how I’ve felt today I think I’d be happy to accept insulin right now. I’ve had zero appetite all day, just felt nauseous all day with cramps on and off.

The nurse said 3 more high days and they’d be looking at insulin. I’m due to up my dose to 2g on Thursday night though so maybe they’ll wait until after that to see if that helps.

I just wish my fasting levels would be ok. My breakfast readings are usually high too but the nurse said that that’s likely linked to the fact I’m starting the day already high.

My lunch and tea I can pretty much seem to have whatever I fancy and my levels are fine. I’ve had Chinese takeaway, strawberries and Nutella, ice cream, pasta, rice dishes. My levels stay good every time. I fast and eat and good breakfast, but no matter how I tweak it it just doesn’t help. So frustrating!

Moominmiss · 13/07/2021 18:04

Thank you @AdventuresAwait, I really hope these side effects don’t last. I’ve felt totally out of it and not myself at all today.
I’ve barely eaten a thing all day due to no appetite whatsoever and just feeling sick. Dreading taking my next dose tonight!

Scotti84 · 13/07/2021 18:35

I braved pasta today for the first time, we got married then went out to eat and I thought I'd enjoy it but still be on the safe side so i got a pasta that had cheese baked on top and a creamy sauce, ate the bits the cheese was baked onto and gave the rest to my OH to finish. Thought that was a good compromise, tested an hour after as usual and my levels were good, I need to be under 140 and they were 120. From what was in the earlier posts maybe this could also be a quick spike and fall, or maybe the cheese and small amount saved it, either way i bloody enjoyed it!

Sorry to hear a few of you suffering with the metformin, that doesn't sound pleasant. I hate when the solution to one thing stirs up other symptoms, as if we haven't all enough to deal with! I hope it settles down for you soon!

My pre hospital food list is awful, but keeps me positive thinking about it... so far I've got sushi, pizza with a cheesy crust, a big mac meal, cream cheese and Salami sandwich on a crusty white bread roll and mars bars! Ooh and Cadbury chocolate with caramel! 🤤
