Just a little group for the ladies with GD to talk, ask all the questions and be there for each other

Hey @CherLW, thanks for starting the thread! Look forward to sharing and chatting more here 😍

CherLW · 18/06/2021 15:03

Definitely! It’s good to have people around that know what it’s like and that you can ask questions too. I found out today that kiwi fruit has a low glucose content so that’s going on the yogurt tonight!

Thanks for the new thread! After two high readings this morning, my after lunch one was fine, however I was 15 mins late testing 🙈 got immersed in work as you do!

GWhiteley · 18/06/2021 15:16

Thanks @CherLW for setting it up. I did feel like we were monopolising the thread a bit!

Had spag bol for lunch & it came back with a normal reading so that's good. I'm out for dinner but going to have a steak with veg instead of chips & onion rings & hopefully that'll be ok.

I like the idea someone had of having fruit & yoghurt for breakie & then crackers & cheese a bit later on so might adopt that as currently already have crackers but the cheese would help things a bit

AdventuresAwait · 18/06/2021 15:27

Can I ask about yoghurts.. I was buying low fat yoghurts but think I read others aren't? Is it just no sugar I need to look for?

Bubbles1st · 18/06/2021 15:29

@AdventuresAwait the best yoghurts are full fat plain ones or Greek ones. Anything flavoured has more sugar in. Some people have mentioned some high protein yoghurts which have helped balance it out a bit but I haven't seen any in the shop to try. I'm happy with Greek and to add my own fruit/seeds. For now until it's the most repeated breakfast known to man !

CherLW · 18/06/2021 15:31

@AdventuresAwait I went for 5% Fage yogurt… I think the low fat ones have more sugar in them.

@GWhiteley spaghetti Bolognese sounds so good! Do you just have normal pasta or are you going whole meal/lentil or anything?

Does anyone have a bedtime snack? I’ve read that sometimes having something like a few crackers and cheese can reduce blood sugars in the overnight fast? So your morning reading will be lower?

OP posts:
AdventuresAwait · 18/06/2021 15:55

Thanks both!

I sometimes have apple and peanut butter or strawberries and cheese. I also read that drinking water overnight (when I wake during the night) helps too.

bewitchingnight · 18/06/2021 17:30

Thanks for the new thread! I go for plain full fat Greek yogurt to have with berries which seems to be working ok so far.

I had my highest lunch reading today after having a nectarine so I guess they are out for now. Snack wise I've been doing berries and yogurt, oatcakes and ham / cheese or peanut butter, or carrots and hummus.

It's been a week for me but I don't feel like I have experimented enough especially at dinner to really know what works yet, carb wise.

CherLW · 18/06/2021 18:30

@bewitchingnight I’ve heard oranges aren’t the best either so I automatically won’t try but I know it’s different for everyone!

I was wondering about hummus, I’ll add that to my list of what to try.
I know what you mean about experimenting with things… I need to do more! I might try one of those pizzas you make with a wrap with some salad.

The dietician said berries are great so I've been buying different berries which I've enjoyed.

Bubbles1st · 18/06/2021 19:37

Just a mention if you hadn't seen already, it's only Granny Smith apples which are recommended.

AdventuresAwait · 18/06/2021 20:31

Oh @Bubbles1st! No I didn't know that thank you.

GWhiteley · 18/06/2021 21:36

Yes I read about Granny Smith so bought some the other day.

@CherLW I've switched back to wholemeal spaghetti as I was having white pasta shells which probably wasn't good.

Thanks for saying about the yoghurt, definitely going to get some Greek yoghurt.

As for bedtime snack, I try not to eat anything after dinner. There have been times when I've been hungry & would have a couple of crackers. I think if I get like that now I'd add a bit of cheese. The only problem I have is sometimes I'll get hungry in the middle of the night as well & would then have another couple of crackers. Will have to work out whether to go to bed hungry or be hungry in the middle of the night.

Can we talk about milk for a sec? Does semi skimmed have a lot of sugar in it? I like a glass of milk most days but unsure if this will affect my readings?

Bubbles1st · 18/06/2021 23:06

@GWhiteley it might be trial and error with the night time snacking.

Whole milk is better if you can drink it.

Bubbles1st · 19/06/2021 07:53

Second morning after insulin and readings are still too high for fasting. The
Diabetic team aren't available over the weekend and she just said on Friday she is sure we will have to review and up my dose at Monday's appointment.

How is that helpful?

It just puts me off eating breakfast. Last night I had hardly any appetite and had a pathetic tea really just to make sure I had good readings before bed.

I don't know how ladies do this from week 10 when they get diagnosed early in subsequent pregnancies !

Morning rant over.....

CherLW · 19/06/2021 09:16

@GWhiteley I don’t like milk unless it’s a tiny bit on cereal (which I’m now avoiding). I would assume while milk would be better tho like the full fat yogurt etc…

Does that mean we would be better with full fat cheese?

@Bubbles1st that’s annoying they aren’t available over the weekend!
Isn’t it a thing where if you don’t eat enough say carbs your blood sugars can go higher? I’ve read so much lately and I’m sure it’s true.
Like it says you shouldn’t skip carbs etc as baby needs them.

It’s so hard isn’t it to know what to do for the best!

AdventuresAwait · 19/06/2021 09:31

Yes so hard to know @Bubbles1st. They told me I still need carbs and I think we have to have enough to eat as I'm sure they said it makes a difference.

GWhiteley · 19/06/2021 09:52

My dietician definitely said not to cut out carbs, just to reduce my portion sizes when I do have them. She also said especially for lunch & dinner to still have them as they're what give us most of our energy

Metallicalover · 19/06/2021 09:55

Hello Ladies, have you look at the gestational diabetes UK website? Some good recipes etc www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk

There's a lovely supportive group joined to that page on Facebook called gestational diabetes mums uk also.

Congratulations on your pregnancies 😊 the site and group were a god send during my pregnancy x

Someone on that Facebook page told me I had to leave the group because I said I was doing well with the advice from my NHS dietician! Apparently you can follow the (quite extreme IMO) low carb route they push Confused So bloody rude and I did leave.

What were your numbers? It takes a while to get the insulin dose right and you'll probably be on a very low dose starting off. I wouldn't be tempted to start eating less or very low carb, it's a sure fire way to make your blood sugars go haywire and make yourself ill, especially on insulin. If your post meal readings are ok then you're doing all you can with your diet.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 19/06/2021 10:26

Hey ladies sorry to jump on, I just have a quick question. Did you have any symptoms prior to being diagnosed with GD? I had an OGTT yesterday morning (was referred as my bmi was 30.5 at booking appointment) this is my 2nd baby. I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant. They said if anything shows up I'll probably find out by Monday.

Bubbles1st · 19/06/2021 13:17

@JewelGarden I didn't scrimp on carbs. I just wasn't a meal, as different random food groups on a plate. Think mackerel, cottage cheese, olives, sandwich thin and salad, urgh, feel gross just thinking about it!

I'll just to see what they say Monday.
