@AdventuresAwait I agree with the others, maybe what you had was a small amount so they weren’t concerned. I’m sure they would have told you if there was anything to worry about.

The time I did have them in my urine I was at an early appointment with the midwife so I don’t think I had eaten yet. I haven’t had anymore since and I do carbs 2 out of 3 meals really. Like someone else on here said I tend to have salad for lunch some days and some breakfasts I just have fruit, yogurt and nuts.

I tend to avoid carbs too, just as its easier than risking a high reading sometimes, although i can tolerate brown toast with peanut butter quite well so i try and have that for breakfast or lunch. Still loads less than before though.

We're off to the other halves parent's house for coffee and cake, sunday Tradition over here, his mum makes awesome cakes too... at least i can enjoy the cup of coffee!

AdventuresAwait · 11/07/2021 14:16

Thank you @CherLW and @DressyGerbera x

Scotti84 · 12/07/2021 17:02

Has anyone tried a form of potato? Does that raise the numbers dramatically or is a small amount ok?

CherLW · 12/07/2021 17:16

@Scotti84 I’ve had a jacket potato or small new potatoes. I would say the size of the jacket potato I have we be around fist size. I have it with butter and cheese and always seems to be ok for me

AdventuresAwait · 12/07/2021 17:32

@Scotti84, Yes I've had jacket potato and my readings were fine. Dietician just said to have a small potato and to ensure the salad or protein portions were bigger. Also have had a small amount of potato salad & sweet potatoes. All fine.

Scotti84 · 12/07/2021 17:33

Thats good, i might give that a go, love jacket potatos. And an excuse to cover it in cheese, thanks!

bewitchingnight · 12/07/2021 20:21

I've found new potatoes and sweet potatoes to be ok although yeah same as everyone else about a handful amount.

CherLW · 12/07/2021 21:42

I’m really confused… today I was really awful and had a crepe with strawberries and chocolate sauce (I felt awful after but it was definitely a one off)… did my reading two hours later as I normally would and it was 4.9!! I was shocked at how low it was!

OP posts:
AdventuresAwait · 12/07/2021 21:57

I had the same @CherLW! I had two profiteroles as we had friends here & my reading was not as low as yours but it was fine (below my target)... I don't understand it lol

Firevie · 12/07/2021 22:10

I’m trying a bedtime snack tonight (2strawberries chopped up, almonds, sunflower seeds and full fat cream) - my attempt to bring fasting levels down. Let’s see xx

Bubbles1st · 12/07/2021 22:11

@CherLW that's when I think they suggest you spike test, it could have been low because it rocketed and crashed. So if you want to actually test your tolerance they suggest you test at 15, 30 and 45 mins.

If however you're just having a bad day/ snack and don't want know then that's ok too, but don't take any confidence from just the 2 hour reading and repeat it without spike testing otherwise you could make mistakes along the way.

It's my DPs birthday tomorrow and we are going out for the day. I'm hoping going out for a cooked breakfast will be enjoyable and easier to stick to plan !

CherLW · 13/07/2021 08:18

Definitely a one off @Bubbles1st I can’t take the guilt!

Thanks for the info on spike testing, if I have something like that again I’ll try it.

Hope you your DP’s birthday, a cooked breakfast is much easier isn’t it! You can get all the tasty things and not have to think about carbs too much! I’ve started using beans for my carb if I have any cooked breakfast type thing 😊

@AdventuresAwait oh I love profiteroles!! They are on my list for as soon as the baby is out 😂

@Firevie how was the reading this morning after having your become snack?

OP posts:
Firevie · 13/07/2021 08:34

@CherLW morning! It was 5.3 (yesterday morning it was 5.6 without a snack the night before). My fasting needs to be 5.2 or lower so not quite there yet but will see. Will try a different snack today perhaps and will try walking after the snack which I didn’t do yesterday. Feel like I’m walking loads now. After breakfast/lunch and dinner but suppose that’s good. Just walking now after I’ve had my porridge. Hoping for a good breakfast reading in an hour xxx

CherLW · 13/07/2021 08:46

@Firevie that’s a really good improvement tho! I think bedtime snacks are the way forward for morning readings. I have the same as you usually for mine but instead of the cream I have a full fat yogurt.. the 5% Fage one which is apparently high in protein. Maybe something with a bit more protein could make up the extra bit of difference?

OP posts:
Firevie · 13/07/2021 08:56

@CherLW ah thanks for the tip. I’ll try that. I was also thinking of trying ryvita cottage cheese and cucumber as a bedtime snack tonight? Also do you have to walk after your bedtime snack? Can that make a difference? Xx

Moominmiss · 13/07/2021 09:03

Anyone else on metformin for fasting readings?

If so how long was it before you saw a difference in readings, if at all?

I only started on it last night so wasn’t expecting to see any difference yet, but just wondered when I might? (If it’s going to help).

My fasting level was still 7.1 this morning. Feeling so crap about it. They’ve talked about insulin by Friday if the metformin doesn’t help.

Also I had THE worst night after taking it. The stomach cramps were so intense. Plus I had the craziest achy, dead arm, and woke up feeling so so sick.

CherLW · 13/07/2021 09:31

@Firevie I definitely do not walk after my bedtime snack… unless you count the walking to the toilet 10 times 😂
I like the idea of the ryvita and cottage cheese too! I stick to some sort of protein for every bedtime snack I have 😊

OP posts:
Firevie · 13/07/2021 10:01

@CherLW lol 😂 thanks I’ll try adding protein too. Just did my after breakfast read and it was 8.3. Ugh! So annoyed!!! I just want to avoid going on medication for as long as I can. How long does it take for the nurse to put you on metformin? I remember you’re still diet controlled @CherLW - are all your readings within range every day? X

CherLW · 13/07/2021 10:07

@Firevie it’s weird isn’t it how it changes so much each day! Are you drinking before, during and after each meal too? Someone said that helps so I’ve been doing that.
I am luckily still diet controlled at the moment and my readings are all within range, I just hope I can keep them like that as long as I can.

OP posts:
Firevie · 13/07/2021 10:13

@CherLW ah that is so good that you’ve had all your readings in range!! I guess I should start drinking more during my food. I have quite a bit afterwards but didn’t have a lot of water before or during my breakfast

CherLW · 13/07/2021 10:19

@Firevie so far so good, it’s just tricky but wouldn’t question if I did need the meds.

I try and drink a full pint by the time I’ve finished my meal.

OP posts:
Firevie · 13/07/2021 10:30

@CherLW oh wow a whole pint during your meal? How much do you drink after your meal?

CherLW · 13/07/2021 10:33

@Firevie yeh I would say a pint of water or squash. I don’t usually drink much more after.. just sort of the end of the pint at the end of my meal.
