bewitchingnight · 23/06/2021 15:16

That's great that everything is in the right range @GWhiteley x

Cocomelon2019 · 23/06/2021 15:44

Hi, can I join please?

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks in my last pregnancy two years ago so I've had to test from 8 weeks this time, diagnosed at 10 weeks and was put on insulin at 11 weeks for fasting levels. I'm now 12 weeks. Testing 6 times a day (1 hour post meal) and all my post meal readings have been fine no matter what I've had. I've been spike testing the riskier meals to check.

I have HG and have certain "safe" foods so finding experimenting with other GD meals a bit tricky. By the time I was diagnosed last time I was only being sick 2/3 times a day so it was easier to manage. ATM I can't eat or drink anything before 12 without it coming straight back up, similar in the evenings and I'm finding it hard to eat meals and snacks 😬 I've had two 4.1 readings in the last three days, which obviously isn't great on insulin but the nausea is so bad I'm struggling to force food down that I know will come back up 😑

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant 🙈 Just hoping the next 6 months go quickly!

Bubbles1st · 23/06/2021 16:55

@Cocomelon2019 welcome, I can't imagine being diagnosed so early! This thread was set up after several of us due in September started to get diagnosed and we are grumbling with just 12 weeks to go.

I've just started insulin and metformin and really disappointed diet couldn't control it but fasting levels and low tolerance for any carbs at breakfast have proven to much.

AdventuresAwait · 23/06/2021 17:07

That's good @GWhiteley xx

Oooh @Bubbles1st, thank you so much. That makes sense! Really helpful link. Thanks xx

@Cocomelon2019, as has been said, I can't imagine being diagnosed so early. Its good to chat here... welcome! xx

bewitchingnight · 23/06/2021 17:11

Hi @Cocomelon2019 sounds like you've had a rough time of it, I can't imagine having to do all this with first trimester sickness let alone HG!

GWhiteley · 23/06/2021 17:44

What's HG?

GWhiteley · 23/06/2021 17:46

@Bubbles1st so if the fasting one isn't low they're likely to put me on metformin?

I'm struggling to get that reading down so going to have to up my game before next week as want to try & avoid going on it

AdventuresAwait · 23/06/2021 17:51

@GWhiteley, HG is hyperemesis gravidarum, I think. Severe nausea and sickness.

It was the fasting one they were most concerned about for me. It is fine now I'm on metformin.

@Bubbles1st, I just checked and the bread I have is the same carbs/sugar as the white bread I was changing from! Definitely changing again!

GWhiteley · 23/06/2021 17:57

Ooh, that sounds awful @Cocomelon2019. Really feel for you

bewitchingnight · 23/06/2021 18:02

I need some snack ideas that don't revolve around ham, eggs, yogurt or peanut butter! My eating is becoming a bit samey. Anyone got any good ones they're enjoying?

Also has anyone tried eating pasta or baked beans? How were your readings if you did? I really fancy baked beans (could get some of the low sugar ones I suppose) and I did buy some wholewheat pasta but I haven't eaten any yet.

CherLW · 23/06/2021 18:14

That’s good news @GWhiteley if all is good right now then that’s the best thing to focus on.

I had a call with the diabetic dietician today and she asked about changes I was making etc and how my readings were. Told her they were all in the range they set so just told me to carry on as I was and let them know if I get any high ones.

@AdventuresAwait have you tried varieties of bread? Even trying things like wraps, bagel thins? I’m not sure what there are like compared to bread.

Welcome @Cocomelon2019 I really feel for you having GD and HD, I hope things settle for you!

@bewitchingnight I had some white spaghetti the other night which wasn’t bad on the reading after but I would have wholewheat from now on.
I really want some baked beans!! The low sugar Heinz might be ok? What would you have it as? The carb? Maybe beans, egg, bacon and mushrooms/tomatoes?

OP posts:
bewitchingnight · 23/06/2021 18:58

@CherLW yeah I think the carb? What I really want is beans on toast but I think that might be pushing it!

CherLW · 23/06/2021 19:10

@bewitchingnight that sounds like a dream.. I would happily have that with lots of cheese!!

I think it will have to go on my ‘when I’m allowed’ list.. which is mainly a list of different cakes 😂

Bubbles1st · 23/06/2021 19:26

@bewitchingnight I'm eating pepperoni and a slice of cheese or Granny Smith apple and cheese. Also trying some cereal bars followed by slice of cheese again....

@GWhiteley I think it depends on your trust, but my consultant said that metformin is tricky to get right to help with fasting levels and if it doesn't work you need insulin anyway. So mine put me straight into insulin but then as breakfast went up that's what the metformin is for, as it slows the glucose release down making the carbs more tolerable. If that makes any sense.

GWhiteley · 23/06/2021 20:01

I desperately want a pizza, Mac n cheese & lasagne but they're going to have to be on my 'after babies born list'!

I have some no added sugar baked beans but darent have them as it would be with sausages & potatoes & it would just be too much. Could have them with a fry up though I suppose

I had a call with the dietician today too & she said they'd review it again next week, so need to get my fasting level down by then. But she was happy with everything else luckily

Metallicalover · 23/06/2021 20:27

@GWhiteley would a homemade pizza made with meat and cheese pizza and wholemeal wrap satisfy the craving?
Can you not make Mac and Cheese with wholemeal pasta, no flour and full fat cream instead of cheese?
Lasagna with some wholemeal pasta sheets, home made sauce and extra cheese?

bewitchingnight · 23/06/2021 20:53

Yes I think pizza might be my first tea home from the hospital meal @GWhiteley !

Oh I'll have to have a look at cereal bars @Bubbles1st I'd written them off in my head as unlikely to work!

@CherLW I like the style of your list 😂

GWhiteley · 23/06/2021 21:16

@Metallicalover those are good suggestions, but I'd rather wait & have them how I like them.

Just had my first high after dinner reading & a bit gutted. I had 4/5 small roasted new potatoes with roast chicken & veg & for the first time in 6 months had gravy with it since I can now stand the smell & taste without retching. Hubby does like it thick so that's the only thing I can think of. Going to test again in half an hr to see if it's come down at all.
Needless to say I won't be having gravy again for a while!

Bubbles1st · 23/06/2021 21:40

Is everyone who is getting higher readings remembering the important of drinking plenty of water with and after your meal? Also some
Exercise will help (easier said that done after evening meal!)

peoniesandpastels · 24/06/2021 07:06

What a fab idea for a thread! Can I join?

I was borderline in my first pregnancy (in hindsight definitely should have been diagnosed, according to my current hospital trust) and had early monitoring in this pregnancy. I was diagnosed at 10 weeks, now almost 15 weeks. Just started metformin for fasting numbers, which has been a real treat. I'm still hovering around 5.2 or 5.3 though so I don't think it's working. All of my post meal readings have been fine so far.

GWhiteley · 24/06/2021 08:51

Welcome @peoniesandpastels you're in good company here! We started this group as a lot of us are due in or near sept & found a lot of us had been diagnosed with gd & perhaps needed a thread of our own, instead of bogging down the thread we all met on.

I'm 28+6 & this will be my 2nd week of testing, so still trial & error on my part. So good they've picked it up earlier this time, though does mean you have quite a while to go! This way though you've got longer to get things right

AdventuresAwait · 24/06/2021 09:43

My morning (fasting) level was 5.8 today... not sure why.... I wonder if they'll start me on insulin soon.

AdventuresAwait · 24/06/2021 09:43

Welcome @peoniesandpastels xx
