12 weeks scan showed 10x high HCG levels than normal

Hi,
My doctor told me that my beta HCG levels were 10times higher than normal and they performed an invasive test taking samples from the placenta to do further tests.

Usually high hcg levels are associated with multiple twins (i had no signs of this) or a severe chromosome defect, i forgot the name but smth triophod.

Free Beta hcg was 10x MoM
Papp-A was 2x MoM

I had severe morning sickness very early at week 5-6 and had to get iv drips for dehydration and had a bleed at week 8..

Just checking if anyone had this high rate before? Some of the other threads i read were not more than 3-4x higher than average, but 10x is a bit stressful to hear 😥😥

Hello.
On my 12 ( I was actually 13+2) scan I also got a blood test result of free bcg of 10MoM ..) I think the Word you were trying to day is triploidy ( where the baby has a extra copy of all the chromosomes ) instead of 23 for mum and 23 for dad, he get double from one of them giving a total of 69.
What was your risk for T21?
I had a slight low PaPPa too but normal nt of 1.7.
My risk was 1:72...
I went back for a CVS but due to posterior placenta and high BMI they could do it so I did privet NIPT instead ( even tho this can't rule our triploidy...)
NIPT came back low risk which was reassuring but I had another scan at 16 weeks to maybe have an amnio... doctor saw everything normal in ultrasound so told me either have amnio now if you want or wait for the 20w scan...
I opted to wait but then when I got home I was still so nervous so I called back and spoke to the specialist midwife and she reassured me that with the nipt test and the ultrasound that was good news but if I didn't want to wait for the 20w she could give me an extra scan at 18w.
This was Tuesday just gone in which they were specially checking for markers for triploidy ( triploidy is an anomaly no compatible with life so I was sure if there was the case they could surely see something although they tell you they not always can and sometimes thing develop over time...) She could see everything normal so far so I wasn't encouraged at all for an amnio... I'm now 18+5 and having the 20w scan the week after next...
Since I hadn't have an amnio even tho I'm less stressed I'm still worried..
Specially coz I've been searching and seen cases of mosaic triploidy in which not all the body cells are affected by triploidy only some.
What's scare the shit out of me is them not seeing anything wrong in ultrasounds and then after birth something is wrong....
As they don't tell you why can the hormone be so high... is the first time I see someone with so high 10Mom ( which my other children it was also high 3.5 more or less both but no mention of it).
Please please since you have had your cvs could you come back here to post the results? Thank you in advance and good luck.

Hey.
I did not have any bleeding but yes several sickness until week 14/15 to be honest!
In the ultrasound did they say all was fine?
How much NT measurements u had?. I had everything normal apart from that hormone.. but like u say is súper scary that is so so high like people on forum have double or triple and they are freaking out... we have x10!
Trying to keep positive but yes please please let me know how it goes so maybe u will decide on my 20 weeks to get amnio... thanks and good luck xxx

TTCyear2021 · 21/06/2021 15:37

Hey! Just got some good news, I got cleared off triploid and all the chromosomes came back good, so i am all good 👍 🙏

The scans I had were fine and nothing abnormal (Ive had 3 so far)

Only thing I noticed was that my due date was pushed back 5 days (I mustve ovulated late at day 18 )

I asked them what it means having so high hcg levels but they couldnt give me a clear answer and just told me to enjoy rest of my pregnancy 🙏

Btw, high hcg is a sign of a girl (they told me during 12 week scan its 90% girl)

I'm soo so happy to hear that! And it sure does give me some reasurence as like we said I hadn't even seen anyone with 10MoM either and it is really nice to hear a good outcome... hope my bubba is fine also!.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!!!
Congratulations and as they told you I wish you can now relax and enjoys your pregnancy .
Xxx

@LuU91 did everything turn out okay for you ? 🤞 this thread has been helpful for me as I have all normal results but by hcg is x7! My NIPT is all low risk but I’m still driving myself mad with worry. I’m having a girl too. No sickness or bleeding!

LuU91 · 12/10/2021 11:29

Well I'm 35 weeks now and having a growth scan next week.
At the end I didn't have the amnio as in the 20 weeks scan the consultant didn't see anything and all looked normal so she just referred me back to normal sonographer for the growth scan next week.
The rest of the pregnancy has been normal and I had a couple of emotional 4D scans ( not to check for abnormalities but to see her chunky face ) and she looked pretty normal on them :), I'm still having my days of worriness as I didn't get to have the amnio but I always think if it was triplody they would have seen something by now... so just hoping for the best and no long to go now..
I will update you when she is born.
Good luck.xcc

EalingMamaRelocating · 12/10/2021 11:49

@LuU91 thanks so much for the quick reply! I’m the same as you were a while back - debating on an amnio. I am seeing a private consultant next week so hopefully I’ll get some sort of answer on the reason for the high hormone level but I agree with you that low risk NIPT results and positive scans makes an amnio unattractive. I also had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and have been scared of that happening again from the moment I found out I was pregnant this time.
Your care sounds very good - I’ve not been offered any extra scans or appointments by the NHS to discuss my results. Just a standard letter asking if I want an NIPT (which I had already had before the NHS screening test) or an amnio.
Best of luck to you. It all sounds very promising and I’m sure you’ll have a beautiful healthy baby.

FreeBritnee · 12/10/2021 11:52

I had very high hcg levels with DC2 and convinced myself there was a problem. Everything went well and he is now five and completely perfect 👌

LuU91 · 24/11/2021 13:50

@EalingMamaRelocating hope u are well.
Just wanted to let u know that I had my beautiful babygirl 19 days ago... at 38+5 by elective csec. as she was a chunky cheecks. So far she is a health baby Thanks to God, so keep positive xxxx

kalidasa · 24/11/2021 13:59

I have had very high HCG in all my pregnancies (all boys funnily enough!). Also very severe hyperemesis which starts extremely early I have known I had conceived every time within a few days. As a result of the high HCG I've come back higher risk than "just" my age each time, and in this pregnancy I had to have the placenta test you had (I am 41 now so my age alone made the rate high). I wasn't too worried though as the HCG has been so high in all my pregnancies and indeed this baby is fine. I have had early scans to rule out twins in all of them as well because of the very high HCG with DS1 I even got sent for a repeat scan because the consultant was so convinced there must be another in there (I was in hospital because of the sickness anyway). One of my sisters has also been told her HCG was abnormally high so I assume it is just how I do pregnancy. My Mum was probably the same. I am very fertile though. Even at 41 I conceived very easily (though had a few early losses which is very common at this age) and both my older sons were conceived very quickly. I would say that for me it seems to have correlated with very bad pregnancies (extreme sickness and SPD) but very healthy babies and straightforward labours. Probably just coincidence but maybe reassuring anyway!

Oops just realised this is an old thread. Still, might be useful to someone worried about the same issue.

EalingMamaRelocating · 24/11/2021 16:35

I was thinking of you only yesterday @LuU91! Thanks so much for this wonderful happy update! I am so pleased to hear all has gone well.

I had my private consultant with a fetal medicine specialist to discuss my high HCG levels and he didn’t seem too bothered about them. He also said to trust the NIPT tests over the NHS combined screening results which was reassuring as he was very adamant about that!

Funny @kalidasa - I have had zero sickness ! Barely any pregnancy symptoms in a lot of ways ! Thanks for your post though. I really hope this thread helps others in the future.

Congratulations again @LuU91! Very happy for you.

Wonderwoman13 · 25/02/2022 18:51

Hello, i know this is an old thread but I am looking for some assurance and I really hope someone will replay. My screening test came back ok, low risk for all syndromes however my doctor looked concerned that the free beta HCG is 5.5 MOM he said it is a bit high. Now I need to decide if I will have some additional NIPT test or even amniocentesis. Did everything turn out to be ok for you despite this high HCG. Also, why is it so high if no problem? Thank you mamas

Lynnem1 · 26/02/2022 12:42

Hi I just saw you posted yesterday ….I’m in exact same position as you but I’m 1:44 chance Of having a baby with Down syndrome. My beta HCG was 3.0 and is also high….going to see doctor on Monday for choices …..

Nikki037297 · 26/02/2022 13:28

My chance with my 5 year old was 1in5 and he’s not got any chromosomes abnormalities. So please don’t stress too much your odds are still good

Lynnem1 · 26/02/2022 16:50

Gosh 1:5 must’ve been very worrying but glad to hear baby is fine. I keep seeing everywhere people having HCG levels around 1-1-5 but never 3…. Google is the worst place to go!!

Lynnem1 · 10/03/2022 21:47

Just thought I’d update ….NIPT result came back all good and low risk for all trisomys. The wait is awful but glad all ok :)

That’s great news! Can I ask you if the elective C section had anything to do with the baby’s growth or the HCG levels? I’ve just been told I have high levels of HCG and this can impact on the baby’s growth . Would love to hear about your experience later in pregnancy and birth . Thank you so much

EalingMamaRelocating · 18/11/2022 15:16

Hello @Girlscandoanything , @Lynnem1 and @Wonderwoman13
To recap - My HCG levels were x7 higher than normal ! This put me at a high risk for Down’s Syndrome according to the NHS combined screening but the NIPT test results all came back as low risk.

I was still worried about my HCG levels, however, and I saw a private fetal medicine consultant - as mentioned in one of my posts, he wasn’t too concerned. Likewise, I had another private consultation / scan with a different doctor at around 22 weeks (I was incredibly anxious during my pregnancy due to her being a bit of a miracle babe and following a recent miscarriage) and he wasn’t concerned about the high HCG levels either when I brought them up. I was never told anything about potential restricted growth. Both Harley Street doctors.

Anyway - my baby girl was perfect ! The elective C-Section was purely my choice due to my anxiety about being pregnant generally - nothing to do with my high HCG levels. Really hope this reassures you all and wishing you all the very best of luck! xxx

EalingMamaRelocating · 18/11/2022 15:23

PS her weight was 7 pounds 8 born at 39 weeks - bigger than my son who was 2 weeks late (vaginal delivery) with normal HCG levels ! I don’t think the doctors I saw could explain why I had the high HCG levels.

Girlscandoanything · 18/11/2022 17:48

@TTCyear2021 @LuU91 can I ask how you both got on with the rest of your pregnancy and labour? I have just found out I have a 10 MoM with low risk for Down’s syndrome and I’m feeling really anxious and confused.

Lynnem1 · 18/11/2022 19:35

Glad all went well for you. My daughter was born in august after all the worries with high HCG and MoM. She is thankfully perfectly healthy and weighed a huge 8lbs 6oz. I often wonder if weight/size affects HCG. Wish all the other mummies in that anxious place all the best x

Girlscandoanything · 18/11/2022 21:06

@EalingMamaRelocating thanks for replying! I am so glad everything was fine for you. I feel so anxious.
