Early pregnancy scan

Hi all,

I’m 5 weeks tomorrow. I’ve had a few symptoms and my clear blue digital tests updated to 3+ weeks yesterday so I know my HCG is raising nicely.

My baby growth app says heartbeat can start from as early as 5 weeks. When I have my scan I will be 6+3. Do most people see a heartbeat at this time or is it better to wait until 7?

Dates and baby size can be out early on so it's unwise to have scans that are not for medical reasons. They can end up causing a lot more worry, I wouldn't go before 8wk if you must have a private one. Otherwise hold out for the dating scan.

hopefulsunshine11 · 01/06/2021 10:40

I really wouldn't recommend one until at least 8 weeks.

I had one at 6 + 5 and it was inconclusive. I ended up having a blighted ovum but the anxious wait was horrendous as so many people said that they could see a hb etc at that time then others said they couldn't but everything was ok when they went back so I was in limbo until I had my miscarriage at 8 weeks.

PinkPlantCase · 01/06/2021 10:44

Wait till 8 weeks, then if the dates are a bit off you’ll still see something.

I don’t think it’s worth the heartache at 6weeks, because of there isn’t much to see yet they’ll say come back in 2 weeks and you’ll spend the 2 weeks still not really knowing if there’s a heartbeat.

Garman · 01/06/2021 10:46

Is there a reason you're having one at 6 weeks? I would also say wait, its very early, 8 weeks would be better.

PinkPlantCase · 01/06/2021 10:48

Also it depends if you mind if the scan is vaginal or not. 8 week scans are generally just on your belly, earlier than that I think they use an vaginal probe. It might depend on where you’re having the scan

I have quite bad anxiety and due to the fact we went through fertility treatment, I wanted to check things out. Judging by all your comments, it’ll make sense to push it back a couple of weeks!

Thank you 😊

Hi, I went for a private scan at 6w5d and the heart beat could be seen, however at the scan she estimated I was 6w2d

Raindropumbrella · 03/06/2021 22:30

Definitely best to push it back OP. I had a scan at 9 weeks and no heartbeat was seen! Baby was big enough to be moving though so knew it wasn’t a miscarriage but if I’d been earlier on and not seen a heartbeat, god knows what could’ve happened.
Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

Kilminchy123 · 03/06/2021 23:01

I went for one at 6 weeks due to anxiety and all she could see was the yolk sac and no fetal pole, I waited two weeks to go back and there was a heartbeat and everything appeared great! However, the two week wait was horrendous and causes too much anxiety xx

lockdownbabyx · 04/06/2021 09:58

I had a scan at 6+4 this time, but that was only due to a previous ectopic. I did get to see the heartbeat but this isn't always the case! She also measured me at 5 weeks, but I knew I was further along. When I had my 12 week scan the dates matched up perfectly. The early weeks and dates can vary greatly. I understand wanting an earlier scan, but I'd definitely hold out longer if you can ☺️ xx

EssentialHummus · 04/06/2021 10:01

Wait til 8 weeks. These things are called reassurance scans but that early they tend to provide anything but reassurance.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/06/2021 10:02

Had mine at just before 7 weeks and they incorrectly counted the number of babies.

I'd wait until 8 weeks

willithappen · 04/06/2021 10:07

I had fertility treatment and the clinic being you in for a scan at 7 weeks. Obviously they know your dates exactly for that which is why it's 7 weeks maybe
I also booked a private for 8 weeks because at the 7 week I was measuring 6+1 (heartbeat found) but measuring behind and googling had me thinking I was going to miscarry.
I'm 9 weeks now, so it's been a week since the scan and I'm already back to anxiety and thinking something will go wrong. Had to talk myself out of booking another scan for tomorrow. But the anxiety is so intense. Can't think of anything other than potentially losing baby.

Whatshouldicallme · 04/06/2021 10:07

I had one at 8 weeks and thought it was definitely worth it -- but I agree with others that I don't think it would be useful to go any earlier than that.

Megzj91 · 04/06/2021 10:15

Thanks all. I’ve pushed it out to 8+3. Had my first dose of morning sickness today which I’m taking as a good sign for now Confused

Good luck op, I wish you a bountiful belly of babies!!

Worriesome · 04/06/2021 11:07

I’d book a private scan from 8 weeks as it’ll give you a better answer of how things are. Where I’m from they don’t do private scans before 8 weeks as it’s just too early x

I feel like I Def knew mine were twins then the early scan showed 1. Twelve week scan showing 2 was a shock!!

Well let's go with suprise 🤣🤣🤣 I obv wouldn't swap them now but yeah, DH had said only 2 children and now there's 3 😯😯😯 the twins coming 3 months before lockdown 1

DinoHat · 04/06/2021 12:25

I saw a heartbeat at 5+5.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 04/06/2021 13:43

I didn't see anything at 5 weeks just an empty sac. Which led to a further 3 weeks of worrying until I went back for another scan. This time there was something there but sadly our Baby's heartbeat never started

hellomeluvly · 04/06/2021 13:57

7.5 weeks at the earliest

Mayneedanextraroom · 04/06/2021 16:14

I had a scan at what should have been 6+3 and only found a sac with yolk sac present, they said I was measuring between 4/5 weeks so I was terrified it was bad news especially as I had bleeding too, fast forward just under 2 weeks and there was a baby measuring 7weeks with a heartbeat, one week behind my dates. I’d definitely wait a little longer to avoid any stress if they don’t see much, and congratulations x

@SleepingStandingUp I hope you don’t mind me asking but were the babies in the same sac? I felt the same but only saw one baby and genuinely didn’t think it was possible to miss one! X
