Experienced mums - Do you all wash your new baby clothes before use ?

Nope, muslins I do because you wipe baby’s mouth with them but other than that...

MonkeyPuddle · 29/05/2021 22:17

I washed the stuff I bought second hand but not things that were bought new.

Muffintopsheretostay · 29/05/2021 22:30

Yes, always!
New clothes have been in plenty of places before they hit the shops. Factory floors, vans, multiple people touch them in shops etc etc

ELCSPlease · 29/05/2021 22:31

I did before and will again Smile

mrssunshinexxx · 29/05/2021 22:38

Yes but don't buy any fancy wash detergent use the same as you do for you

Snally82 · 29/05/2021 22:39

Yes, just in normal non bio

addictedtotheflats · 29/05/2021 22:43

I washed the few bits I took to the hospital but nothing else. Didnt end up wearing most of it so I took it all back and swapped for next size up.

edgylemons · 29/05/2021 22:57

I definitely will be, just because I don't know how long it's been on the rails/who's touched it, etc, and with covid and the rest I just feel more comfortable knowing they'll be clean!

Peaplant20 · 29/05/2021 23:43

Not an experienced mum but I have just washed all the baby clothes ready. The label says to do it so I just followed that!

CrazyOldBagLady · 29/05/2021 23:44

Nope.

bookishtartlet · 29/05/2021 23:46

Having worked in retail, always wash them. I just use fairy non bio. Clothes are sprayed with harsh chemicals to keep them non creased in transit. Also, they've been on floors, been touched by who knows how many people.

8dpwoah · 29/05/2021 23:47

I did the new stuff up to 0-3 months and then only did anything bought secondhand, mainly to make it smell 'right'. We use non-bio anyway.

For number two I had planned to wash the stuff from storage but it smells as good as when it was put away, good old vacuum bags, so we'll see...the washing machine was much less busy before DD arrived!

HoppingPavlova · 29/05/2021 23:48

I did with my first, not with the others. No difference.

BourbonBiscuits20 · 29/05/2021 23:53

I didn't but know lots that do, I understand lots of people could have touched the clothes beforehand but genuinely wondering what could possibly live on clothes for so long? Like what is the hypothetical risk? Interesting comment above about chemicals never heard that...
As PP said I'm glad I didn't wash everything as bits that weren't worn I swapped

dottiedaisee · 29/05/2021 23:55

Ermm why ? Am trying to think of the logic 🤫

Dust ??? Yes fine dust that could potentially put a new baby at risk as they breathe that in
ChrissyPlummer · 30/05/2021 00:08

I used to work in retail and the stuff used to arrive in boxes, wrapped in plastic and tissue. Never heard of it being sprayed with chemicals. I can’t think of what you’d spray it with to stop it becoming creased on a transatlantic flight, stuffed in a box with loads of other things. We steamed it to get the creases out

Definately · 30/05/2021 00:13

Yes as part of the whole washing extravaganza before baby comes. But once baby is here if people give us new stuff I probably wouldn't bother washing it.

LittleMimi · 30/05/2021 00:14

Yes washed with non bio. I haven’t done before and don’t think it’ll make a big difference but think it makes the clothes feel and smell nicer.

DramaAlpaca · 30/05/2021 00:14

No, never occurred to me to.

romdowa · 30/05/2021 00:15

I do but i also wash my own clothes before I wear them as Well.

Chelyanne · 30/05/2021 00:38

I do until they are around 2 years old.

I have a mixture of new clothes and ones that have been in storage for years for this baby so will wash it all by around 36/37 weeks.

ContessaVerde · 30/05/2021 00:56

Mine have sensitive skin. I still wash new items before wearing and they are teenagers. If I don’t, the chemicals (dressings) in the fabric which is there to stiffen to make it easier to handle during production irritate them.
You don’t know if your baby will have sensitive skin. Eczema can make children really miserable.

georgarina · 30/05/2021 07:00

Yes I wash before use because newborns' skin is sensitive and I was told about the chemicals on new clothes

Theoldwoman · 30/05/2021 07:12

I always did and for a few months after. I used a special baby detergent too.
