No Fetal Pole seen 7 weeks

Hey Everyone,

I attended an early scan as have history of ectopic, lmp 15/03, made me about 7 weeks 4 days at date of scan, had an abdominal scan and could only see a sac and yolk, no fetal pole. Nurse asked me if I have my dates wrong, I told her no, I know when last period was, she said no you don’t ovulate on your period, you’re measuring 5 weeks, everything looks healthy, come back in 10 days.

I am beside myself with worry and can’t think of anything other than my situation. I have a private vaginal scan booked for Monday for second opinion.

Anyone had a situation like this?

I'm going through the same thing, my rescan is a week on Monday but I can't wait that long so booked another private one tomorrow. Best of luck to you x

That doesn't make any sense, they always measure weeks by your LMP so you were right you are 7 weeks 4 days. I really hope this is positive for you though so best of luck xxx

@Loznrog how long are your cycles and when do you ovulate? It may be that you ovulated later and therefore the pregnancy wouldn’t be as far along as you think. I’m sorry to hear the sonographer wasn’t very helpful- it sounds like she was quite rude! Maybe give your EPU a ring for some advice too. They may scan you xx

When did you first get a positive test? You can use that to try and figure out when you've ovulated. Because if you ovulate later than average then you will be earlier on in pregnancy than you'd expect based on lmp.

My cycles are around 28 days, I got my positive on the 30th April and had sex on the 16th, which is exactly two weeks before.

Symptoms seemed to have eased so not holding out to much hope now xxx

Hi OP so you said your LMP was 15th March which would mean if you had sex on 16th April that would have been on CD31 which means your cycles are a lot longer than 28 days? If you ovulated 3 weeks ago then it is more likely you are 5 weeks not 7 weeks.

Sorry @CAG14 I’ve just written that completely wrong as was looking at my FLO app LMP 15/03, had sex on the 30th March which is my 16th day in cycle, first positive 13th April which is 30th day in cycle. Hope I’ve not confused you to much!!!

I think you're probably fine. If you got your positive test on 30th April you were probably 4 weeks at that date. And that was only a week ago so now you'd be 5 weeks x

Oh ok, just reading your latest post then I'd maybe be a little more concerned as you got your positive a while ago now. When this happened to me I left it a week between scans hoping it would catch up but wasn't optimistic and it did end in miscarriage (I was offered d&c at the first scan).

@loznrog ahh okay gotcha now . Yes so that would make you 7 weeks 5 days, not 5 weeks. When is your second opinion is in Monday? My LMP was 27th March and I ovulated on 10th April and got positive test on 20th April and I am 6 weeks 1 day. My midwife confirmed this based on my LMP. I have a scan next Saturday which is when I'll be 7 weeks as they should be able to see heartbeat and fetal pole at this stage.

I really wouldn’t do a private scan on Monday. I’m surprised the private scan place has let you - I was desperate for one last week for similar reasons and they wouldn’t do one within 7 days of another scan, and strongly recommended 14 days.

The wait is awful but it does get better with time, and there is a reason that the NHS don’t scan you again before 2 weeks, even if it feels brutal. I cried a lot.

My first scan was 6w from ovulation, 7+1 from LMP. Sacs both looked fine, but no heartbeat or fetal pole. My follow up was yesterday. 7+5 from ovulation, and all perfect.

It’s very likely that you won’t see much change in two days and that will cause you more stress which won’t do you any good. I was desperate for a scan, I couldn’t stop crying for worry and didn’t think I’d make the two weeks. The first week was agony. The second week was better, somehow.

I know it’s agony, but honestly, I’m stunned anywhere has allowed you to book a scan within 2 weeks in these circumstances, let alone with a week, and it really, really might not do you any good.

I have the same situation. My last LMP was on 13/3 which would make me 8w1d today. However I had a private scan on bank holiday Monday just gone and they said I measured at 5w6d. Baby had a strong a heartbeat so I was happy to see/hear that. However myself and my OH are not convinced so we have another scan booked for Tuesday with EPU. I really do hope I'm right with my calculations. Wishing you all the best x

Just a note to say that an abdominal scan is not as clear as an internal.
I had one which didn't detect a heartbeat but the dildocam did.

I would second what grim has said. I had a scan at 8 weeks and with the abdominal wand they could see nothing. I had an internal scan and the baby was seen straight away.

@Loznrogi went for the private scan today, the sonographer was really rude and didn't even bother looking properly. She said there was a gestational sac with nothing inside it even though the 2 previous scans showed a yolk sac inside. She said I'm 4 weeks and 5 days even though I should be around 7 weeks by now. I don't even know what to think anymore 😔 surely it's not good news if they can't even see the yolk sac anymore. I'm so gutted. I really wish the best of look for you tomorrow and that you get a better outcome than me. Please let me know how you get on xx

Same happened to me - I randomly ovulated late and have been regular (due to medication) for over a year. Technically I’m 9+5 since LMP but recalculated weeks based on that method with updated conception date is 8wks (6 since conception). I found it hard to get my head around but hopefully it helps? My first scan showed no baby and second no heartbeat, but third was more positive and confirmed I was just earlier on than I thought. All the best

Should mention that I was seen at EPU due to cramps hence all the early scans

Thanks everyone for your replies and sharing your experiences, seems it can just go one way or the other. I really appreciate hearing both. I’m preparing for the worst but hopeful at the same time.

@Annamiller12 I’m so sorry to hear this, I was thinking of you today. I guess there is nothing really now you can do but wait for scan Monday to find out what’s happening. I am here should you need to talk. I’ve found it so comforting speaking on here! Have you had any pain or bleeding? Loss of symptoms?

Just had my scan and not great news here either, they saw an embryo but without heartbeat and measuring 2.9mm which they said is only about 4 weeks, which does not work with my dates at all so am assuming miscarriage, thanks for all the messages xx

So sorry to hear this. Try not to worry as you are still early. Usually no heartbeat is detected at this early stage. Have you got another appointment x
