Where's my bump?

I'm 17 weeks and still no sign. Haven't put on any weight whatsoever (lost 5 kilos puking at the beginning). I think I can see the beginnings of one...it's kind of firm to the touch between my knicker line and my belly button and a bit bigger but I thought I'd have more by now. Is this normal?
Also, when will I feel movement? Do you feel movement even if you haven't really got a bump? Sometimes I feel sort of strains in that area when I move or sort of pulling down sensations but not exactly pain. Get this when I turn over in bed for example. Feel like I've been pregnant for ages (and not even halfway through! ) can't believe I'm still to all extents and purposes flat! Sometimes it worries me that something's gone wrong and that's why I'm not growing. That's silly, isn't it?

My sis didnt show till 31 weeks!

HuwEdwards · 14/11/2007 10:31

I didn't really show till 4 months with my first, but had as you say a firm belly. And yes, I got the pulling when I turned over in bed, like I was dragging a weight with me. Movements? probably nearer 20 weeks IIRC.

If your midwife says all is fine, then try not to worry. You will def have a bump soon!

macaco · 14/11/2007 10:42

I'm glad you got the pulling too Huw as that was worrying me more than no bump. seeing midwife next week. Can't imagine feeling anyhting with no bump, seems so weird. always thought of feeling movement once you have a big ol belly

With dd1 I didn't show at the 20 week scan at all, not even lying down.
My mum with her first was nearly due and no one believed her cos her bump almost disappeared when she lay down for check ups
Don't worry, it'll turn up later

HuwEdwards · 14/11/2007 10:45

and the movements when they start felt to me like bubbles popping, not what I was expecting at all. No big-bugger-kicks, till later on!

preggersagain · 14/11/2007 10:47

i can lend you my bump for a day or so would be a blessed relief tbh- make the most of it- soon you'll be the size of a space hopper

bobsyouruncle · 14/11/2007 10:48

I had no bump this early in pregnancy too, just the firmness you describe. In fact I had a small bump throughout my pregnancy which worried me, but dc were fine & healthy! Are you petite yourself?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 14/11/2007 10:49

Enjoy your flat tummy while it lasts, you'll soon be moaning about being the size of a whale!

The pulling sensation is probably your ligaments stretching to accomodate your growing babba.

I think I first felt ds move at about 17 weeks, but didn't realise what it was at the time. It wasn't until a few weeks later and the movements were stronger that I realised what those earlier feelings were.

macaco · 14/11/2007 10:51

I wouldn't say petite, no. I'm 5'7 and was about 11 stone and a couple of pounds when I got pregnant and then lost over half a stone through morning sickness. So now I'm ten and a half stone. But I'm not skinny. Bout a size 12 or 14 in trousers. I think perhaps if I hadn't lost the weight with ms I might be showing more now. Still in all my normal clothes, in fact some are a bit big since the ms!

bobsyouruncle · 14/11/2007 10:57

I lost half a stone through morning sickness too, that's probably contributing to your lack of bump. How did your scan go? Do you have another scan soon? Scans always put my mind at rest.

LoveAngelGabriel · 14/11/2007 10:59

I didn't feel movement until about 20 weeks, and even then it was very subtle. Oh, and I wasn't showing much at 5 months either- by 6 and a half months weeks I looked fit to burst and people were asking me if I was having twins, so you never know how your bump will grow!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 14/11/2007 11:00

I had terrible morning sickness until 13 weeks, and I attribute that to not showing until 20 weeks.

mistypeaks · 14/11/2007 11:03

I lost 5 kg through morning sickness with both my pregnancies. (which still haven't gone back on - yay!!) I didn't show at all until 7 months with 1st and at 8.5 months with second my new neighbours apparently talked between themselves about me for ages as they couldn't from dd1!! At 16 weeks pg with no 2 I got married (in a size 10 wedding dress - fitted etc) You can't see any hint of pregnancy. And I'm only 5' tall so if you're taller as well . . . Some women just carry the bump more 'internally' I think.

HolidaysQueen · 14/11/2007 11:29

I started showing properly (as opposed to looking a bit podgy) from about week 19 - I'm now 21 weeks - and only got my first experience of someone assuming I'm pregnant (rather than checking first) yesterday. I started to feel flutterings/vibrations of movement at around 18 weeks but again it's only the last couple of weeks where it has definitely been baby movement. So I don't think you're unusual - and you aren't unusual in worrying about it either, as I definitely was!

On the pains, I've been getting aches and pains in the bump region (esp when rolling over in bed or after exercise) as have most of the people on the March 08 board (we were talking abotu this only yesterday!) and we've come to the conclusion that it is just ligaments stretching. But it's one of those many things that pregnancy books never really mention!

daisynova · 14/11/2007 11:29

Enjoy not having a bump - I started to showing at 8 weeks which was soooooo upsetting. I then had to start wearing mat clothes at 10 weeks so I am truly fed up with the same clothes already and I am only 20 weeks now.

e14mum · 14/11/2007 11:36

Hope this all reassures you! Bump didn't appear properly until 19 weeks when it suddenly popped overnight. And I was worried too, but not anymore- if you could only see the size of me now!

kelbel · 14/11/2007 11:38

I wa stone and half lighter at 16 weeks due to hyperemesis, so didn't get a noticable bump till about 22 weeks. then it soon comes on! enjoy it, everyone will be v jealous. didn't feel proper movements till about 21 weeks, nothing to worry about. Im nearly 36 weeks now and sailing through!

3madboys · 14/11/2007 11:44

i loose weight in the first few months of pregnancy each time, just cos i feel so sick.

i am now 25wks and have a small bump, noticable when naked but not necessarily when i have clothes on,i am at the stage where people wont ask if i am preg incase i am not iyswim?

i was the same with my last three pregnancies, i can still wear my size ten jeans i just have an elastic hair bobble round the top button

slim22 · 14/11/2007 12:03

Hi, I'm about same size and weight as you.
14 weeks and just look very bloated. some days you can't say, some days I look like I overate.
If you have good abs (unlike me, never recovered after DS!) it's perfectly normal.

As for movement, felt first flutters with DS around 18 weeks. But it's hard to recognise. You usually realise in retrospect after a couple of weeks.

Enjoy

Spillage21 · 14/11/2007 12:16

Hello

At 17 weeks your uterus has only recently started to 'grow' out of your pelvis into your abdomen. Plus, if this is your first pregnancy, you'll have lovely abdominal muscles keeping it all tucked away.

As a first pregnancy you may not feel movements until 18-20 weeks and like slim22 says you'll realise in retrospect!

When you see MW and they listen to heartbeat on sonicaid, you can often hear baby moving by the odd 'bumping' sounds (sounds like they're moving furniture in there). Some women often make the connection and realise they can feel it, but didn't acknowledge what it was!

bethoo · 14/11/2007 12:17

i was the same, if you check out my profile that is me at 30 week! i was desperate for a belly then when i got one it was 'cant wait to get rid of it!!' be glad that yo have less time being cumbersome as it will grow almost overnight! women show at different times. there is another thread somewhere, a girl is 20 weeks and is worried about the size of her bump too!

Notyummy · 14/11/2007 12:22

Yep, same as the rest here...don't worry about it! I am a similar build to you...nearly 5 10 and just under 11 stone now (and was when I got pregnant). I was working doing a very active job which involved me dressing in combats and teeshirts, and clients refused to believe I was pregnant even at the nearly 7 months stage!! The only down side is the vanity thing where you don't people thinking you are just a bit tubby around the middle.... you want them to realise that you are PREGNANT!!

Being tall means you don't show as much IMHO (altho I had a friend the same height as me who looked like a weeble, but thats because she lived on a diet of iced doughnuts and large cheese mayo bagettes...t'was a mystery how she put on 4 1/2 stone...)

I think it was about 18 weeks for movement, although everyone is different and apparently it is later in first pregnancies...probably because you don't realsie what it is!

macaco · 14/11/2007 12:29

hello, thanks everyone I feel a bit better. I keep thinking maybe I can feel something but I know I'm just kidding myself. Also I'm quite windy at the mo and I know they can feel like that at first. Was quite worried about the pulling/stretching sensations, glad to hear that's normal. The pregnancy books don't mention it at all.

LoveAndSqualor · 14/11/2007 12:34

I'm 22 weeks now with first, and look a bit fat, but still not obviously pregnant, I don't think. I can see my stomach sticking out when I'm lying on my back, but in clothes it's only just noticeable. Still in normal jeans (though they're done up with a safety pin now!). I started feeling movement at about week 20 - like bubbles bursting, as someone else said. Biggish bubble, mind you ...

Sara85 · 14/11/2007 14:41

I was like daisynova - bump was apparent without clothes from about 8-9 weeks. was out of my lovely jeans by 10 weeks and have been in mat clothes eversince!23 weeks now.I wasn't sick at all at the beginning tho-avoided throwing up at all costs!and i ate like a pig!i know someone who is 24 weeks, very slight girl anyway, but there is nothing of her-no extra weight,no bump!
