Getting hair coloured in pregnancy- did you/would you?

Interested to know how many of you did/didn't or would/wouldn't get their hair coloured when pregnant. Stuff online is as vague as ever due to limited studies (understandable) but generally says if you do colour your hair then do it after first trimester and avoid the scalp so the dye only touches hair not skin.

For context I'm looking to get balayage (so nothing will touch scalp) and I will be 30+3 at the time of my appointment. Of course it's not essential but I've not had my hair coloured for almost 2 years now and won't have time to for months when baby comes so figure now is my chance!

Some will tell you it's fine, otherwise will be horrified you'd even consider it. I don't think there is any conclusive data to suggest you shouldn't these days as products are all so well tested. Especially with balayage, any risk seems extremely low as you say. Your hairdresser should be able to advise.

Personally - I have an appt this week for a cut and highlights, and I can't bloody wait (currently 25 weeks) 😂

YouBoggleMyMind · 27/04/2021 10:57

I dyed my hair at 33 weeks pregnant and prolly before that too. No issues.

Moominmiss · 27/04/2021 10:59

Yep!

I’m 19 weeks and having my hair done next week.

In my previous pregnancies I was rocking a silver colour so the upkeep was horrendous and was having it done every 5-6 weeks!

rosegoldivy · 27/04/2021 10:59

Coloured my hair throughout both my pregnancies, including full heads of bleach and foils and we lived to tell the tale.

I'm booked in to get my colour done the day before my planned section 🤣🤣

Get your hair done and don't fret, feel fabulous

I'd imagine no issues that late in pregnancy for the baby. Only things to be really mindful of is how COVID-safe you feel the salon is (because 3rd trimester is the worst time you could catch it) and that your skin can react to things very very differently whilst pregnant. Make sure you do a tester and obviously any signs of irritation, reconsider getting it done!

alabaster11 · 27/04/2021 11:04

Full head highlights every 6 weeks, even through both pregnancies.

It's fine so long as it's not touching the scalp 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheGlitterFairy · 27/04/2021 11:05

I had a full head of highlights a couple of weeks ago at 25 weeks and have another appt booked for just before the birth! Enjoy!

AhaShakeHeartbreak12 · 27/04/2021 11:09

I got balayage at 6 weeks pregnant, was reassured as nothing was touching the roots it wouldn't harm the baby. I'm 24 weeks now and all good so far

crossstitchingnana · 27/04/2021 11:11

No. Didn't want to risk it.

Nothing77 · 27/04/2021 11:13

You can go for organic hair colour at an organic salon?

Chelyanne · 27/04/2021 11:18

In previous pregnancies, yes.
Not this one though. Decided to embrace my greys pre-pregnancy (well more white), got a dodgy dip dye look atm until it gets long enough to cut all the coloured hair off.

smithyca · 27/04/2021 11:18

My children are older, (20 & 15) and there wasn't any information around at that time about dying your hair (or none that I can recall), I dyed mine throughout on both not knowing any different.

MF1981 · 27/04/2021 12:58

Yep - am 16 weeks and had mine done at the weekend. Midwife said no issues, especially if it made me feel better!

SEE123 · 27/04/2021 13:00

Personally, no. I didn't feel comfortable to do so. If I was pregnant again, I'd do the same.

PinkCookie11 · 27/04/2021 13:07

I had mine done throughout.
No issues!

dementedpixie · 27/04/2021 13:07

Nhs says its OK and that some women choose to wait until after 12 weeks (doesn't say you need to wait). I got mine done when pregnant and was fine

Hair can be more unpredictable in pregnancy and your scalp may be more sensitive though

cremeeggsonboxingday · 27/04/2021 13:11

My hairdresser told me I'd need to do a skin test, even though I'd had my hair coloured regularly, because pregnancy can make your skin react differently. I did and it was fine.

MM1993 · 27/04/2021 13:53

I had my hair dyed Sunday (23 weeks) full head colour and had the same done at 12 weeks. Will have it done again once or twice more before baby is here - no issues

MM1993 · 27/04/2021 13:54

Although I must say, both times my roots haven't taken as well as they usually do! Have been dyeing my hair a similar shade for years and never had this problem before pregnancy so next time may have to bleach the roots!

Peaplant20 · 27/04/2021 15:15

Personally I wouldn’t but I did ask my hairdresser about it once and she said the issue was just that your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy so they have to be careful with the dye touching the scalp x

Rosieposy89 · 27/04/2021 15:29

I usually get my hair bleached and then coloured on top but I'm just going to get it coloured and skip the bleach. I've had skin test and it was fine.

buckingmad · 27/04/2021 16:11

I'm 25 weeks and had my hair highlighted this week. Had a patch test done as you can react differently but I was fine.

Amichelle84 · 27/04/2021 16:56

I get balayage and have during both pregnancies.

MrsB2019x · 27/04/2021 18:07

I’m 24 weeks, have dyed my hair once already and will be again this weekend. From what I’ve read you just may react differently than usual to it so you’ll need a patch test even if you have used that dye before
