Hi all, losing my mind!! I am roughly 5weeks (difficult to know as pregnant straight after MC) had an early scan today because of some very slight brown discharge a few days ago. Scan showed the gestational sac but no clear yolk sac. I know that 5w can be too early to see this, HOWEVER, my hcg levels were 4,500 5 days ago and have been doubling every 36 hours. If they have continued to double even every 3 days they must be around 15-20,000 by now. I’ve read online that a yolk sac should be visible with this level of hcg regardless of weeks pregnant. Please help, has anyone had high hcg with no yolk sac yet?xx

I remember the exact same thing happened to me at the same time as you.
At 5 weeks nothing was visible for me, 2 weeks later a baby, heartbeat!
As you said 5 weeks is extremely early.
Are you able to get another HCG done to check levels?

Mosshead348 · 21/04/2021 17:45

@PinkCookie11 thanks so much for replying. They didn’t offer doing another HCG which is frustrating but if they have increased at that rate everything I’m reading says they are so high we should have seen a yolk! Do you know what your HCG were?x

I don’t actually I’m afraid!
You may be earlier than you think if you fell preg straight away?
Are you able to go to your Early pregnancy unit? Would your GP so a HCG?

Mosshead348 · 21/04/2021 17:59

Well it’s been 3 weeks since my positive test so unlikely to be less than 5 weeks and with HCG so high last week....waaaah!!! I will phone my GP tomorrow and see if he can do one. Thank you ❤️

Have you done a home test to see how dark the line is?

Lassy1945 · 21/04/2021 18:02

What did the sonographer say?
Why were you having a scan at 5 weeks?

Lassy1945 · 21/04/2021 18:03

Ah sorry I see why

What did the sonographer say?

Mosshead348 · 21/04/2021 18:06

Home test is a good idea I will do this tomorrow. Just because everything I’m reading says with blighted ovum the levels continue to rise as body continues to think pregnant but no yolk develops, waaaah just want to hear other people with high levels and no yolk turn out ok!!!

I had a scan at 6 weeks that was “empty” then went back 10 days later to check if I’d fully miscarried or if ectopic as my levels had increased but not what they’d expect. 2nd scan showed two strong heartbeats - identical twins. Honestly, 5w is too early. Good luck x

Mosshead348 · 21/04/2021 18:14

Thanks so much @m0therofdragons and massive congrats on your wee twins!!! I think I’ve accepted 5wks too early to see just worried as HCG so high not to see anything. Driving myself mad I know!xx

@Mosshead348 I had a scan at 5 weeks because of previous ectopic, couldn't see yok sac so got called back either a week or 2 later and could see it and heartbeat. No yok sac at 5 weeks is now 4 weeks old and sleeping in his cot atm

ArcticSky · 21/04/2021 19:24

At 5w 3d could only see a gestational sac and my HCG level was 12,000. 2 weeks later a baby with a heartbeat measuring 7w 5d! The actual levels mean nothing as long as they are doubling! Now 12w 4d, had a scan at 11w and all ok so far (1 baby, NIPT results good). Good luck!x

Mosshead348 · 21/04/2021 20:00

@ArcticSky OMG THANK YOU!!!!!!! Honestly I’ve been driving myself mad I need to stop reading because you read until you find the bad stuff. Thank you thank you. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and so glad all going ok for you xx

@alexio thank you ❤️ Think I need to stop reading anymore and try and relax until next scan xx ps. Congrats on your successful pregnancy

@Mosshead348 thank you. Yeah there comes a point you just need to stop reading because it's always the worst case scenario.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/04/2021 20:41

I didn’t have my levels tested but i had the same situation otherwise, spotting so a scan, sac but nothing showing, a week later a tiny heartbeat. She is 13 now.

Mosshead348 · 21/04/2021 20:43

@alexio 100%, my OH is threatening to put me on a technology ban 😂

@SirVixofVixHall ah amazing so good to hear it’s more normal than I thought, honestly thanks to everyone for the support I am a total worrier!!x

Hi, I'm having the exact same. I think I'm about 5 weeks, my hcg levels today were 14,000 but they could only see gestational sac. I have a scan next week but they've told me it's unlikely to be viable 😢

Mosshead348 · 22/04/2021 17:45

Hi @MayDay27 aw I’m so sorry they said that. They didn’t say that to me which I’m not sure if I’m more annoyed about because everything I’ve read doesn’t look too positive so wish could prepare myself BUT we have to try and stay positive as it does seem this has happened before and everything been fine!! When is your scan next week? Mine s weds morning so I’ll let you know x

MayDay27 · 22/04/2021 18:13

Mine is Thursday morning!! It's nice to be able to talk to someone going through the same! I hate the waiting so much. I also hate how bloated I am with sore boobs (I didn't mind one bit when I thought it was viable!). I am going crazy googling!! Trying to do maths and work out how my hcg levels could be ok! Did they measure your gestation sac?

Mosshead348 · 22/04/2021 19:03

I know I’m the exact same and I’m feeling SO sick atm too it feels impossible not to be pregnant. Please try not to google that was me all day after my scan yesterday and it just got me upset. You need to tell yourself it’s ok because so many things say it can be, our HCG levels could be high for so many other reasons just beyond the average person but we are so early on and need to remember that seeing anything at 5 weeks is rare. They did measure it but I didn’t even think to ask and they didn’t tell me anything I didn’t know what I was looking for until after. Do you mind if I ask why they scanned you in the first place?xxx

OP posts:
Mosshead348 · 22/04/2021 19:05

@MayDay27 didn’t tag you!

OP posts:
MayDay27 · 22/04/2021 19:19

Of course no ask away!! I went in on Friday 16th as I had some spotting and cramps. I rang the doctors and they were worried about ectopic so I went in for bloods and a scan. The scan didn't show anything and the bloods came back 800. Went back the 18th for more bloods which were 2000, at this point I was really positive as they had increased! They booked me in for a scan today which showed just the GS and took more bloods which were 14,000 so I've gone from praying my hcg levels increase to wishing they hadn't gone up so much! This is my first pregnancy but we were worried we might struggle as I ovulate so late (day 20/21 of 28/30 day cycle). We were so excited to get a positive when we did but then it's just been a rollercoaster since!

MayDay27 · 22/04/2021 19:20

What I'd like to know is why if hcg levels differ so much why they then base what they should see on the levels?

MayDay27 · 22/04/2021 19:30

Sorry posted that and hadn't finished! Only because if my levels had double from 800 to today rather than rises more than double then they'd just be 6400 which wouldn't be such a worry!
