Still no period 4 months after miscarriage :(

Hey,

I had a miscarriage in Dec last year at about 10wks pregnant, was diagnosed as a mmc and I then had an MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) which all went fine and I've since had negative pregnancy tests.

I'm just now getting a bit concerned that I still haven't had a period after the miscarriage. I have always had a regular cycle, and so what is strange is that I can feel each month ovulation pains and then 2 weeks later I get really bad period pains, but no bleeding! and then 2 weeks later again I get the ovulation pains, like clockwork! It's just a bit odd that there is no actual flow, like nothing at all.

Has anyone else had this? and did your periods just come back one month? I'd really like this chapter closed now but feel like I can't move on not knowing what's going on down there :(

Thanks x

Sorry for your loss. I had exactly the same. AF was missing for 18 weeks.

I had my second Erpc in July (first one in June) and has cyclical pains as you described, however I was rushed to hospital in October where it was discovered I had a bad infection in my left tube. Had lots of antibiotics and an overnight stay.

In mid November it still hadn’t arrived, had an orgasm and then it came back instantly, 15 days later had another orgasm and started bleeding again like a period. Cycles have now returned back to normal.

I would ask your doc to check for infection as they think it was going for all that time. X

Hi @shellyt2188 sorry to drag up an old-ish thread but have your periods come back yet? I am having EXACLTY the same situation as you right down to the no of weeks pregnant (although I had to have 2 MVAs as the first wasn't sucessful).

Nearly 2 months down the line and still no period for me either, but as you describe, the cyclical pains.

Would love to hear how you're getting on and what, if anything has worked for you.

shellyt2188 · 14/05/2021 16:23

Hi @Norberta! Not a problem, happy to reply! No unfortunately my periods still haven’t come back, it’s now 5months without a period but still having the ovulation and period pains like clockwork each month, I’m actually lay down with a hot water bottle as we speak, but again no period...nothing! I spoke to a doctor last month and she didn’t seem overly concerned, just said that it can take a while sometimes for the lining to build back up. It makes complete sense, but I guess I’m just worried now that I’ll struggle to be able to get pregnant again with such a thin/non existent lining. We’re hoping to try again after our wedding in November so fingers crossed it sorts itself out by then..
Let me know how you get on or if you’re trying anything that works!

Sorry to hear you’re going through the same x

Thanks for your reply I will keep you abreast of my progress as well. Blimey 5 months is quite a long time... I have a doctors appointment on 7th June so I will report back after that. I find the period pains but no period so frustrating! First time it happened I was constantly running to the loo thinking “surely now it’s here!” But alas, no. I’m sorry you’re going through it too but glad in a sense I’m not the only one...

shellyt2188 · 18/05/2021 21:40

I know what you mean about not being the only one! I spoke to the doctor yesterday and they’ve referred to get blood tests on day 21 of this cycle, hopefully this is the start of finding out what’s on!x

Norberta · 19/05/2021 09:00

Very best of luck with the blood tests. I’m sure they’ll find it’s just a wee hormone imbalance that can be easily fixed Smile. Let me know how you get on xx

Norberta · 26/05/2021 21:40

Hi there! Just wanted to drop by and let you (and any other desperate future googlers) know that I FINALLY got a period 12 weeks after my MC was discovered and 8 weeks after the 2nd MVA. I’m prepared for the next few cycles to be a bit all over the place but at least the confusing phantom periods have stopped for now.

Really hope your blood tests are conclusive and you get to a speedy solution @shellyt2188. I have never felt more relieved to bleed as I did today!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 29/05/2021 11:44

My periods did come back after a couple months but very short, short cycles (8days shorter than before) spotting during etc. I had blood tests at the GP after six months hormone levels within normal range. I tried acupuncture to balance my hormone levels and improve blood flow to the uterus, and I really feel this helped me. The first period on acupuncture was awful, heavy, brown, painful. But I'm three and a bit weeks after this and I have had a positive pregnancy test. May not working out again, but I'll def keep the acupuncture up

shellyt2188 · 08/06/2021 10:33

Hey, just checking back in on this thread as I too hate finding old posts with no conclusion!

@Norberta So happy you finally got your period - must be such a relief!

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 That's so interesting about the acupuncture, I might actually look into that!

So I had my blood tests last week and all have come back fine and within the normal range! My progesterone was also at a good level so at least I know that I am ovulating.

The GP has now advised that I get an ultrasound scan to check my lining and she's also prescribed me 3months of the Pill which is supposed help induce a bleed too.

I'm due on my period this week, so hopefully I'll either finally have a normal period this month (it's been 6months now...!) or something will come from the scan or the Pill cycles - still keeping everything crossed!x

Hey @shellyt2188, just wondering what happened in the end? I have recently had a D&C and no period in 11 weeks now.

Hopefulhoney6 · 11/02/2023 11:23

Hi @shellyt2188 I’m also interested what happened. First period after MMC was v v light one day, now I’m pretty sure I’m ovulating on the same day as before MMC - CD18 (BBT/OPKs/EWCM) but not bleeding. And I’m about to ovulate again according to OPKs…!! Need to speak to my doctor if I don’t have AF this month.

shellyt2188 · 11/02/2023 11:54

Hey @Hopefulhoney6 @stardust1994

so it turns out I developed something called Ashermans syndrome, which is basically scarring in the uterus from the MVA. Essentially this stopped my lining from building up each month hence why there was no bleeding. I decided to go privately as was getting no where with NHS who were just saying to keep waiting. The Dr was brilliant and I had a Hysteroscopy procedure where he removed the scarring from the lining. I did get a true period the following month and a few months later fell pregnant with our 1st 🙂

I would say that waiting probably does work in most cases as Ashermans is rare but definitely push for docs to look into it if you’re still not having a period.

hope that helps!xx

Thanks so much @shellyt2188. Really appreciate you replying. This is what I am worried about after my D&C! I have read about Ashermans. Think I’ll wait to see if I get a period this month (should be two weeks) and if not I’ll ring the EPU who did my surgery to discuss. And good idea to go private if not, I’m London based so lots of options around here. Hopefully it’s just hormones! Great that you managed to conceive and have a successful pregnancy too :)

stardust1994 · 13/02/2023 11:01

Hey @shellyt2188, thanks for the message. Since posting I have also gone private and seen a specialist.

They did a 3D scan and said my lining looked great but there is a small area of irregular tissue at my cervix. They said to see if I get a period this time round (3rd cycle since miscarriage) and if not they’ll do some further testing to see if that tissue is that’s stopping my period. So I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Congrats on your baby :) nice to hear you got a positive outcome in the end!

Hopefulhoney6 · 13/02/2023 11:04

Hey @stardust1994 can I ask how you found the private consultant? There are so many options online! I’m hoping for a period this month (2nd cycle since Mc) but planning for if I don’t get it.

stardust1994 · 13/02/2023 11:16

Hey @Hopefulhoney6, I just did a lot of googling. I went with Dr Lower, an Ashermans specialist in London. I’d ruled out hormonal issues as I’d had tests to show I was ovulating. I’d make sure you do that first :)

He’s expensive but worth it in my opinion.

When I saw him he did think that 3 cycles won’t unusual for things to settle down hence why he’s giving me one more cycle to see if my period returns or not before looking into the area of irregular tissue.

I’m hoping to get to my period in 2 weeks time but we’ll see :)

Hopefulhoney6 · 13/02/2023 14:01

Hey @stardust1994 - good to know. Dr Lower is on my list too. I may be covered by BUPA health insurance but I’m not sure if they cover it as it’s linked to fertility. I’m ovulating tomorrow or Wednesday so I will see if I get a period in two weeks as well :) Also my third cycle since MMC and ERPC. (or a BFP!!).

best of luck!!

stardust1994 · 13/02/2023 14:45

Hey @Hopefulhoney6, he was really good. Gave me a really thorough consultation and scan. Also sent me a clear letter afterwards which was really helpful.

You can get it through BUPA insurance just don’t mention fertility. Tell them it’s because of very painful periods and they will allow it.

Ah sorry didn’t realise you were 3rd cycle too. Good luck! Also feel free to PM me if you want more details or anything x

Hopefulhoney6 · 14/02/2023 09:02

Thanks @stardust1994 …. I had MMC 9th December. An extremely light period 1st Jan (like two days of a pantyliner, if that!). Then nothing on 29th Jan when I should have had my next one. So next one should be due around 26th Feb. So third period after MMC.

Great news you had a good lining though. Wonder where it all goes if you don’t bleed?!

Are you still TTC. We’re DTD every other day so I imagine a chance we could still conceive this month.

I may well PM you if no luck this month x

stardust1994 · 14/02/2023 09:23

hey @Hopefulhoney6, so apparently if your cervix is scarred the blood gets trapped and then just gets reabsorbed the fallopian tubes eventually.

Still trying to conceive as Dr Lower said it was fine as my uterus itself looks good. I ovulated on Sunday and have had sex a few times so pregnancy is possible. However, if I’ve got my cervix is scarred shut then sperm won’t be getting in anyway.

My D&C was 24th Nov. Ovulated 13th December but no period after. Ovulated again 13th Jan and had one afternoon of light spotting on the 26th. Wondering what will come this time :)

Hopefulhoney6 · 14/02/2023 10:56

Thanks - we’re in a similar boat / timeframe then.

Keep me updated :)

Hopefulhoney6 · 25/02/2023 12:53

How did you get an @stardust1994 ?? Any AF?

I got 9 days of flashing smileys and then a solid on CB OPK on Monday, so think I ovulated on Tuesday according to FF so 4DPO and hoping I get AF this month. If not I’ve looked on BUPA and it looks like I’m covered for “complications from surgery for miscarriage” so hopefully I can get a referral x

stardust1994 · 25/02/2023 13:59

Hiya, my period is due today/tomorrow but may be delayed as the specialist I saw got me to take progesterone until yesterday.

If no period by next Wednesday I’ll have surgery the following Monday for Ashermans. So we’ll see. xx

Hopefulhoney6 · 04/03/2023 16:03

@stardust1994 I was meant to get AF today and I’ve had just the smallest hint of brown but no flow. Have booked to see my GP on Monday and will push for a referral to Adrian Lower. Appreciate she might want me to do luteal phase bloods for progesterone but hope not! Did you get your period or are you having surgery?

stardust1994 · 04/03/2023 17:05

Hiya @Hopefulhoney6, I had two days of very light pink spotting so Dr Lower advised I should have a hysteroscopy so I’m having that on Monday.

It’s hard to know whether your situation is the same as mine but it does sound similar so I would try to see a specialist.

I really recommend the Ashermans support Facebook group as well. I’ve found it so helpful!
