Maternity winter coats...?

Hello all

I am due in early April so will be at my biggest through the coldest months of the year. I spent ages going through maternity wear sites on the internet today and hardly anyone seems to sell warm winter coats! Are we all meant to be glowing so much we don't need one?

Don't want to spend a fortune, maximum £100.

Anyone seen anything good - either a maternity coat, or a normal coat that is cut in a way that allows space for bump to grow??

Thanks

vickyy

I tried on a maternity coat in Top Shop and looked like a barrel. I ended up buying a normal coat from Next in the next size and it did the job. Too big for me now though....

Alva · 10/11/2007 20:54

I noticed Zara had some nice maternity ones a few weeks ago - not sure how much as I hope to wing it (due next month!)so didn't investigate...

BroccoliSpears · 10/11/2007 20:58

Zara does maternity clothes?!?!?!

dd666 · 10/11/2007 21:02

i brought normal coat in bigger size and my dd was june baby so it was through winter too, and i didnt do it up unless it was wet i was always too hot!

tassisssss · 10/11/2007 21:04

My ds was born in April and I managed without (and that was in freezing Aberdeen!). I think I just didn't do my coat up and had a big scarf.

I did however notice Maternity jackets on my way thoguth debenhams today. I can't remember the name of their Maternity collection though - maybe red herring?

Alva · 10/11/2007 21:19

Yes, Zara has a select little range!

rdk · 10/11/2007 22:46

does anyone know the web page please to look at the zara collection as i cant seem to get on to it

mummypig · 10/11/2007 23:07

this was a while ago but when pg with ds1 I wore a great winter coat from Asda. It wasn't maternity, just cut in a way that it did up over the bump.

When pg with ds2 I wore my normal coat from NEXT but he was born in July so I wasn't terribly huge at Christmas anyway.

sorry I can't find the zara stuff online either

susiemj · 11/11/2007 22:08

There's a nice long fleece on jojomamanbebe. I bought one by a company called Noppies but the stockist has run out. I love it. You could google it.

IndulgeMePlease · 11/11/2007 22:11

Don't bother, just buy a long cardi and a scarf. You'll be flippin' hot by next month. Both my dc were winter babies so I spent 2 pregnancies Christmas shopping in t-shirts, opening the windows in January and cursing everyone else's central heating.

VictorianSqualor · 11/11/2007 22:16

vickyy, are you on our april thread???

I bought a coat in primarks the other day, it only has buttons at the top so it opens up at my belly.

Was only £15 as well.

Oasis have got a great puffball (not as scary as it sounds) black winter coat in - £90. The shape is perfect for a bump. I've only got 5 weeks to go an just bougt my normal size because the shape is perfect

mylittleponey · 12/11/2007 09:31

I bought a Laura ashley coat in the biggest size - was wonderful. Wear it with little one in the babysling as it wraps around keeping us both warm.

Gemy · 12/11/2007 13:50

Since you will be at your biggest as the weather is starting to warm up, I would really try and hold off if I was you. Or buy a coat in your normal size that you actually like, even if you can't do it up. No point ending up with a too-big coat or an ok sized coat that you only got to cover your bump and would not usually choose. Of course, at £15 then you can't go wrong but otherwise save your money for next winter when you've lost all your baby weight and can buy a fantastic coat where no compromises have to be made.

This coat from French Connection is a possible contender?

www.fcukbuymail.com/ProductDetails.aspx?language=en-GB&ProductID=70A6C&CategoryID=w_coatsjackets to wear with elbow-length leather gloves
?
or

www.fcukbuymail.com/ProductDetails.aspx?language=en-GB&ProductID=70A5H&CategoryID=w_coatsjackets and you can tie the belt above your bump

or a cheaper option (but not that cheap and shorter) that again requires the long leather gloves:

HelenMc1 · 12/11/2007 14:17

I have the black version of the French Connection Wanna coat suggested by Gemy - I am 31 weeks and looking pretty rotund - and it is great!

I wear it with the fabric belt that it comes with during the day for work and dress it up in the evening with a nice broach and thick leather belt that sits above my bump.

It is pretty classic and good on the warmth front so I can see it lasting a couple of seasons.

HolidaysQueen · 12/11/2007 15:31

I've just bought a lovely smart maternity coat in H&M - only £40 as well (H&M maternity stuff is fab!). It's a black mac type thing, but has a belt just under the boobs so it gives me a really nice shape rather than making me look massive. DH thinks I look great in it and also impressed with how smart it is - we both figured I'd be living in a fleece or ski jacket this winter. It's warm enough to wear over just a long sleeved stretchy lycra top although it's probably not going to be warm enough on its own in the depths of winter - although it will be fine with a cardi or jumper underneath.

daisynova · 12/11/2007 17:55

I bought one on eBay as I had the same trouble looking for a maternity coat. I will be giving birth in March so will be at my biggest in Feb and March.

laura032004 · 12/11/2007 18:01

I've got a long black fleece coat from JoJo Maman Bebe if anybody is interested in that? It does make your bump look quite big, but I liked that look! Don't know the exact size, something between a 14 and 16 I'd think.

tyaca · 12/11/2007 19:23

hiya,

take a look at these cardy-coats from monsoon.

monsoon cardy-coats

i just bought the funnel neck grey marl one. because they're all mostly buttoned at the top, should be able to accomadate a growing bump down below.... mine looks like its meant to be a pg coat. not as warm as proper coat, obvs, but still quite toasty and been keeping me warm the last couple of cold days just fine.

PLUS - not being maternity wear, am hoping there may be life in it after baby (or at least thats what i told myself and DH as i shelled out £75 )

good luck - with coat and pg!

tyaca · 12/11/2007 19:25

ps - the pics on the site dont do them justice, may be worth taking a look instore 'cause they lovely wool and nice fit

Sara85 · 14/11/2007 14:49

I'm due in early march so I'm out of all my witner coats now! went shopping last week for a new coat and found a lovely one in the New Look maternity range-its about knee length in black with nice silvery bits threaded through it.it buttons from the collar to the waist and has got plenty of room for your bump to grow, but without looking like you're wearing a tent!and its lovely and warm-i wore it out in Paris over the weekend and i was lovely and warm!

vickyy · 18/11/2007 19:00

Thanks all :-)

I like the long cardie idea in principle but I'm really suffering with the cold now and it's only November... I just don't think I'll be warm enough.

Will check out New Look, Primark for the £15 coat, and French Connection for the Wanna coat I think. Pre-maternity coat straining at the tummy now so I'd better get a move on!

I raised my eyes heavenwards when I first saw this thread.
Boy, was I wrong.
None of my coats do up. I look like an evacuee from the second world war.

rascal1979 · 30/11/2007 23:03

My MIL has bought me a great coat from Matalan £45. It's a swing style one but comes to my knees (most 'swing' ones don't even cover my bum!)

Will def have more than enough room when I am 9mths gone!

Just a normal one - Size 8!

Unfortunately not on the website but they seem to have quite a few suitable for pregnant ladies! all reasonable price too !
