Why am I so big at 21 weeks? I'm only 5'2"!!

I am only 5 feet and 2 inches tall and 5 months gone but I already look 7 months pregnant!

I am eating every couple of hours because I can't eat big meals so I find I am always hungry!! Do you think I am just putting on weight and getting fat because of how often I am eating? My boobs have also got much bigger!

Everyone at work is also shocked at how much my bump has expanded over the past few months. There is a girl at work who is due in 2 weeks and I am almost as big as her.

Has anyone else experienced this? It is my first baby and I can't understand why my bump is so big? My legs and arms are still the same! lol!

Possibly because you are 5' 2". Your body doesn't have as much space inside as someone who is 5' 7" so it all comes outwards.

Or I could be talking complete and utter rot, in which case someone will be along to tell you shortly.

Congratulations by the way

mistyamica · 09/11/2007 10:38

I forgot to mention I am only usually a size 10! (obviously I'm not anymore haha!)

IME the shorter you are the bigger you get/look. Some of DH's colleagues are tall and willowy and you could barely tell they were pregnant even at 9 months -- there's more space to hide the baby if you're taller but if your short the only way to go is outwards...

LilRedWG · 09/11/2007 10:40

Wayhey - I'm not crazy after all

lemonaid · 09/11/2007 10:41

you're you're you're you're you're

nailpolish · 09/11/2007 10:43

im only 5' and iw as huge really early too

got v uncomfortable towards the end - i could feel baby's feet digging into my ribcage all the time

owwwwwwwwwww

chunkypudding · 09/11/2007 10:47

not sure about that lemonaid - i WAS once tall and fairly willowy, now 32 months pg and have a belly the size of a planet

causing much amusement to friends and relatives, none of whom have seen me with a belly before - my mum has taken to calling me 'little fatty' and my dp struggles with shock/giggles everytime he sees me naked romantic...

lemonaid · 09/11/2007 10:51

Ah, but were you as big as mistyamica at 21 weeks? (she asks sagely, secure in the knowledge that you've not actually seen mistyamica so can't dispute the master theory whether or not it's any cop... )

mistyamica · 09/11/2007 10:51

Ahh thanks lilred!

I do look funny tho. At 9 months I think I will be as tall as I am wide!

Well I'm only 4'11", and I waddled around utterly immense with ds.

Not only was he a large baby, but he had LOTS of amniotic fluid, midwife said "he's got his own swimming pool in there" so that added to my size. That is actually a very healthy thing, don't worry about it.

If it was just you over-eating you see it a weight gain everywhere else surely (fatter arms, thighs etc.)?

Are you due any further scans? if so ask them about baby size, amount of fluid etc.

lizziemun · 09/11/2007 10:57

I'm only 5ft 1in and was massive with my 2nd. But i carried her all at the front. Went from 13st 7lb to 14st 4lb a week before i had her, she was 9lb 2oz (smaller then my first she was 9lb 4oz) a week after i had her i was 12st 9lb.

mistyamica · 09/11/2007 10:58

I had my 5 month scan last tuesday and to me the baby looked real big! When baby kicks I can feel it right down in my privates!! Is this normal?

I was told everything were 'normal findings'!!

He does pack a punch tho! When I'm eating he likes to kick me down below and I alomst choke on my food! lol!

I know pregancy feel they go on forever but are your realy "32 months pg and have a belly the size of a planet" .

MamaMaiasaura · 09/11/2007 11:01

mistyamica - I am 5'3 (and a little bit) and am nearly 33 weeks. Measuring fine for dates but.... over the last few weeks complete strnagers (people in shops etc), friends as well all comment that they dont think the baby is going to wait till end of Dec etc etc. I too have large norks. My hips and bum have remained fairly small (10-12) and therefore i look ridiculous, little legs massive round preg tummy . I said to my mum i wanted to buy a maternity skirt and be a bit more feminie as wearing jeans all the time. She said that you cant get much more feminie than the shape you are now bless.

Good luck with rst of pregnancy xx

LilRedWG · 09/11/2007 11:02

Awen - your Mum is a star

lispy · 09/11/2007 11:05

I was the same and am about the same height. I had to ditch my jeans by week 13. For the last few months my belly was rock hard and I could barely breathe when not standing up. Had a big baby. I asked my doctor once and he said words to the effect of "where else will the baby go?"

bethoo · 09/11/2007 11:09

women are all different so they show differently.
i am 5'4 and did not get big til i was over 30 weeks (see profile) and i am a size 8.
sometimes thin peopel show early, sometimes late.

i worried constantly that i did not show then when i did i was huge!

as long as the baby is growing and well then that is all you should think about.

congratulations!!!

chunkypudding · 09/11/2007 11:17

nice manouevre (sp????? too hard) lemonaid

but I'll say 'well yes I was!' cos you haven't seen me either hee hee

chunkypudding · 09/11/2007 11:19

lizziemum - oops! Yeah it does feel like it, but that's not quite what I meant to write!!

colditz · 09/11/2007 11:23

Probaby because your only 5'2". I was the same. The baby has to go somewhere.

orangehead · 09/11/2007 11:29

Im 5.2 and was the same, my friend is 6ft and was wearing her normal jeans until 3 weeks before. When she left work on maternaity leave everyone at work asked why she was leaving. The smaller you are the less room.
congrats btw

widgetsmummy · 09/11/2007 11:55

can I use that as an excuse if I'm 5'4"?! 26 weeks and got my first "you sure your dates are right?" comment yesterday (from a man!)

I suddenly seemed to have 'bloomed' to a 45" waist but also don't feel like I've put on weight in my face/arms/legs... so DH (for a quiet life) tells me anyway ;)

mistyamica · 09/11/2007 11:58

ahh thanks everyone! I was just starting to worry because I look quite odd! There are 7 other women in my department who are also pregnant and I don't look anything like them they all have normal 'round' bumps!

The funny thing is one of them is carrying twins and she is also 21 weeks. Guess what? I'm bigger than her!

My baby is going to be huge! how am I going to push it out! What worries me is that baby's dad was 9pound 2 when he was born!

OP posts:
chunkypudding · 09/11/2007 12:06

I was 9 pounds 12 I think. Brother and sister both just under that.

lemonaid · 09/11/2007 12:09

DH was 9lb 7oz, I think. DS was 10lb 5.3oz when he was born. Now I'm expecting again and everyone tells me that "second babies tend to be bigger, you know...".
