Is it safe to take Gaviscon during pregnancy?

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have nausea and vomiting. When I take Gaviscon, it instantly works for me. It says that pregnant and breastfeeding women can take Gaviscon but it appears that it is not that recommended. I'm wondering if it is safe to take Gaviscon during pregnancy regardless of which trimester I am.

@Rainb0wDrops

Not the worst idea to ask here rather than taking time from an already over stretched gp service though is it?
It would be worse to receive the wrong advice and then need emergency treatment.

I know I might sound hypocritical given that I gave the advice that Gaviscon is fine... however I don't think it's a bad idea to remind people to risk assess when asking strangers for medication advice (and that there are options such as calling a pharmacist).

Another one here necking the stuff! It was recommended by my midwife.

jazzibelle · 19/01/2021 20:42

@hermitzero peel the label on the bottle back, it says "safe for pregnant and breastfeeding" on it :-)

missnevermind · 19/01/2021 20:45

Yes I lived on the stuff when I was pregnant. Doctor prescribed it too so I got it for free.

I also drank lots in pregnancy for heartburn and, yes, baby was born with a LOT of hair!

Afishcalledwonderful · 19/01/2021 20:58

I had a 500ml bottle of it on my desk at work and used to swig it! I was prescribed omeprazole in the end which was an absolute godsend.

weegiemum · 19/01/2021 21:03

I got it prescribed 2 liters at a time (4x500ml bottles) in all 3 pregnancies. Tried all the flavors too, peppermint was best.

My dc are 17, 19 and 20 now and it doesn't appear to have harmed them!

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/01/2021 21:08

Big bottles 500mls can only be prescribed by a GP, you can only buy small bottles.

My 2 are 23 and 21.

I had a giant bottle in my cupboard at work that I regularly swigged from, for the hideous heartburn and indigestion later on in pregnancy. Could not have got through a day teaching teenagers without it!! DC perfectly fine.

Twizbe · 19/01/2021 21:18

I'm another one who basically lived on gaviscon during my pregnancies.

Teakind · 19/01/2021 22:29

Oh my goodness I'm another one who drank it from the bottle in my third trimester. I was told it was safe by my GP.

MonkeyPuddle · 19/01/2021 22:34

I had a bottle by my bed, one in the living room and one at work. Swigged it straight from the bottle. Bought a new bottle each week when I did the big shop at Asda. It says on the bottle it’s safe for pregnant women, same stuff as gaviscon but half the price.

Another one who drank it all the time - had a mental list of my preference (Boots original flavour for me!). Have had two hairy babies so maybe the old wives tale is true.

Teakind · 19/01/2021 23:46

@Ticklemynickel me too! I think there is something in that old wives tale

Santatizer · 20/01/2021 01:38

Gaviscon Advance says on bottle that it can be used during pregnancy. The pharmacist gave it to me. It's vile stuff no matter which form you take it in but it does do the trick for heartburn and acid, if you can stomach it.
