Is it safe to take Gaviscon during pregnancy?

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have nausea and vomiting. When I take Gaviscon, it instantly works for me. It says that pregnant and breastfeeding women can take Gaviscon but it appears that it is not that recommended. I'm wondering if it is safe to take Gaviscon during pregnancy regardless of which trimester I am.

Speak to gp. Generally it's what's prescribed as a first defence during pregnancy. Ie they suggest seeking doctor input before otc.

My sister drank it by the bottle when she was pregnant

KyraGoose · 19/01/2021 10:42

I drank it by the bottle too. Get a prescription from doctors if you can, otherwise it becomes expensive!

Gaviscon made up about 50% of my diet during both my pregnancies

SallyCinnamon3009 · 19/01/2021 10:56

Another one who drank it out the bottle. Bought Asda's own as it was only £4.50 for a huge bottle instead of £12ish for gaviacon

Poppins2016 · 19/01/2021 10:58

Gaviscon is safe during pregnancy.

However I would suggest speaking to a GP, midwife or pharmacist rather than trusting strangers on the internet!

physicskate · 19/01/2021 10:59

@Poppins2016 - I couldn't agree more!!!!!

Umbridge34 · 19/01/2021 11:00

Speak to your GP however I was another that was necking a big bottle of the stiff every week when I was pregnant.

laura2109 · 19/01/2021 11:00

I'm 34 weeks and on my 3rd bottle, drink it out the bottle too. Sometimes, in the pit of of the night, wake up due to heartburn, have glup and try to go back to sleep!

Poppins2016 · 19/01/2021 11:01

P.s. I meant to add that my GP was happy for me to take Gaviscon in the first trimester as needed (I usually take omeprazole for reflux, which is also safe in pregnancy, however I would personally rather cut out all medications unless I really need them).

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/01/2021 11:02

God I used to drink gallons of the stuff, when pregnant with my 2 lol

DioneTheDiabolist · 19/01/2021 11:03

Gaviscon made up about 50% of my diet during both my pregnancies.

Same here. I had a huge bottle at home and a mini bottle that I filled from it, in my handbag.

Rainb0wDrops · 19/01/2021 13:03

Not the worst idea to ask here rather than taking time from an already over stretched gp service though is it?

physicskate · 19/01/2021 13:26

@Rainb0wDrops - they often won't sell it to a pregnant woman. I got turned away from boots.

It says on the bottle not to take while pregnant (simply because it's unethical to test it on pregnant women.

I know gps are overstretched, but the one hung we're told we can take without approval is paracetamol. Every other medication needs to be with gp approval in pregnancy.

Rainb0wDrops · 19/01/2021 13:29

I bought a bottle last week (6 months pregnant) and nobody batted an eyelid.

Fair enough if you're unsure always best to check with gp or midwife but I just asked friends/family who all said it's ok.
They are wary of saying it's safe as I guess they can never be 100% certain.

dementedpixie · 19/01/2021 13:30

You can buy it off the shelf in the supermarket

user1493413286 · 19/01/2021 13:31

I drank loads while pregnant due to acid reflux. I’m sure that one of them is safe while pregnant as I remember trying to specifically buy it

lockedownloretta · 19/01/2021 13:33

i spent quite a bit of time in hospital when preg due to complications and the they used to dish out gaviscon with the dinners!

Gaviscon website says it oks

MrsBtobe2020 · 19/01/2021 13:33

Pharmacist here... Gaviscon is safe in pregnancy, it seems to be near enough the only medicine we can sell safely over the counter for us pregnant girls! I've been eating them throughout, works a charm!

nicknamehelp · 19/01/2021 13:35

I drank bottles of it while pregnant with my ds he is perfectly fine

Splann · 19/01/2021 13:38

My 2nd child was nicknamed Gav before he was born as I took so much Grin

If it gets worse speak to your doctors. I was given Omniprozole?? (Can’t remember the spelling) which massively helped too. Plus not eating or drinking anything after about 6pm used to help too. Sending you sympathy as it really is horrid x

Mylittlesandwich · 19/01/2021 13:38

It's such a shame that ranitidine has been recalled, it was the best while I was pregnant.
Gaviscon was also safe and I'm 80% sure that the pharmacist was able to sell it OTC when pregnant so that might save you a wait for the GP?

movingonup20 · 19/01/2021 13:47

I guzzled it, it washed down the Rennies Grin

Speak to your midwife for latest advice, I was eventually prescribed Zantac but that's currently withdrawn
