Newborn vs 0-3 months

I'm 26 weeks (FTM) and starting to look at buying a few things. Going off the NHS advice, I'll be buying 6 sleep suits and 6 vests but I'm wondering... do I need to buy 6 sleep suits in newborn size AND six in 0-3 months? Obviously won't know how big the baby will be until she's here so I'm unsure what sizes to get. Any advice would be brilliant, thanks!

Following as in same position!

Ita difficult to judge, I'm sure others will have better advice - but I did this, then DD turned up at 5lb 12oz so I still needed to buy even smaller clothes as neither newborn or 0-3 fit. I think for the sake of 6 of each from a supermarket, it will be worth picking up one of each size just to be on the safe side. Congratulations!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 08/01/2021 16:17

I'd buy a pack in each size from the supermarket, they're not super expensive and you then have sizes for baby to grow into.

DS arrived 3 weeks early and was 5lbs 10oz, so dinky, DH had to do a quick shop to get vests as we didn't expect a small baby. Much better to be prepared.

I had to buy extra in "tiny baby" size as the newborn were too big, thankfully mum went to the 24 hour asda for me and dropped them at the hospital. Babies come in different sizes, I would buy one pack of newborn even if you are measuring larger.

MrsL2016 · 08/01/2021 16:20

As a guide the newborn size go up to 9lb ish. So if you have a big baby then they might not be in that size for long. I got both sizes and took a few of each in my hospital bag. He was 8lb and fit in newborn for about 3 weeks.

movingonup20 · 08/01/2021 16:21

Ps my babies were term and no mitigating factors, I just cook 6 pounders it seems

starsinyourpies · 08/01/2021 16:24

My kids (9.5 lb and 10lb) never fit in the newborn size clothes I bought. I had some 'up to 1 month' which did the first couple of weeks then 0-3 months. Totally depends on size of baby.

Expecting another whopper any day now...

Thank you all for this! Smile

My first baby was 9lbs (born on his due date), and didn't fit into any newborn clothes, luckily I brought size up to 1 month to the hospital snd used these. The newborn things I donated as I wasn't planning another baby.

I'm now pregnant again and due this week, I'm bringing newborn (which I have had to rebuy), and up to 1 month again. I think 0-3 would have felt a little too big?

Springandsummer123 · 08/01/2021 16:28

Based on my experience - 0-3 will be too big.
I'm due in a few weeks and will be taking a mixture of newborn & up to 1 month.

PandaBabyJuly · 08/01/2021 16:32

My first baby was 7lb 11 and she needed tiny baby for the first 6 weeks .. then went into newborn

I didn't have any tiny baby so she came home in newborn with it swamping her until I went shopping the next day! Grin

LazyName · 08/01/2021 16:43

0-3 months will be too big but it won’t be too long until they are needed. I took loads of 0-3 and up to 1 months to the hospital and one newborn ‘just incase’. My baby was big (nearly 9lb) which I expected hence the larger sizes but he fitted into the only newborn outfit I bought perfectly! Put him in an ‘up to 1 month’ outfit shortly after and it was huge!

My baby was 10lb 1oz

I was told he'd be big due to scans but many people told me scans aren't always accurate. So I brought of both.

He was huge and definetly needed the 0-3 clothes

Survivingmy3yearold · 08/01/2021 17:14

My 10 week old was 7lb 10 but scans kept showing her legs were off the scale in length so I bought 0-3 as I didn't think newborn would be long enough but we were given some newborn bits from family and they fitted beautifully for the first 3/4 weeks

Superscientist · 08/01/2021 17:31

I found asda first size a good compromise my little one was 6lb8 at the smallest and whilst first size was on the big side it wasn't ridiculously big, they fitted until about 9-10lb so unless you are going to have a particularly small or big baby they should be ok. We added some sainsburys upto 1 month too we were in asda first size until about 8 weeks and up to 1 month about 11 weeks. She is still small we are just starting to outgrow 0-3 month clothes at 5 months!

Crabbyboot · 08/01/2021 17:55

I would recommend buying more than that unless you want to be washing all the time. I cannot believe the amount of laundry I do!

My son was a big baby 8lb 9oz. Newborn fitted him fine it didnt last him long but was fine for hospital. However i packed many newborn and had a pack of small baby vests and sleepsuits and a pack of 0 - 3 vests and sleepsuits just incase. I will probably to the same again this time round!

Oneandabean · 09/01/2021 10:05

0-3 is massive. I’ve got some newborn and some up to one month.

Squellyolwelly · 09/01/2021 10:40

For my hospital bag I’ve packed 3 vests and sleepsuits in both tiny baby and newborn and then his going home outfit in both sizes too! We have a few bits in 0-3 but I’m also struggling to know what to buy tbh. My partners said he’ll just go up Tesco and get what we need when the time comes and we have a better idea on sizing!

2Cats3Kids · 09/01/2021 10:49

Second PPs. I was induced at 39 weeks for GD with #1 and told she would be huge. Instead, she was 6lb 3oz and extremely short. Had to get DH to buy her premature/tiny baby clothes to wear for the first week! I'd do newborn unless you have a reason to believe that baby will be huge? Mine weren't into 0-3 months until almost the 2-3 month mark.

Scarletpig1 · 09/01/2021 10:54

Some people told me they grow out of newborn size quickly so I only got a few in that size. But 0-3 was far too big when baby was born(7lb12oz) and I found I was having to constantly put on washloads to clean the few newborn sleep suits which was a pain when recovering from a c section. So I would buy a decent amount of newborn clothes and 0-3 as well if you can afford it. It just makes life a bit easier in the early days

Scarletpig1 · 09/01/2021 10:57

Oh and I wasted loads of money on cute outfits which hardly got worn. He mostly lived in vests and sleep suits up till 6 months. Good luck.

CarlottaValdez · 09/01/2021 11:00

I’m another one that only had newborn and had to get my mum to do an emergency run to mothercare for tiny baby size. He was 42 weeks but not quite 6lbs.
