Moses Basket?

Hi,

I’m currently 25 weeks and trying to make a start of baby purchases. My mum is insisting I need a Moses basket for downstairs (Have ordered a Snuzpod for the bedroom) however I know a few people that never had one and wondering if it will be a waste of money?
If you had a Moses basket would you recommend it? If not what else do I need for daytime naps?

Thank you! x

I asked this when I was pregnant and got a resounding "no you don't need one", so never bought one.

She mostly napped on me at first, then we'd use the bassinet of the pram, or swing/bouncer. Also been known several times to put her on a blanket on the changing mat.

lcdododo · 05/01/2021 19:44

Never used one. Just used a sleepyhead on the sofa

Thank you for your replies, they answers I was hoping for Grin trying to limit the amount of baby stuff I buy especially if it won’t get a lot of use!

We had a Moses, a Snuzpod and the bassinet of the pram. DS refused to sleep in any of them for the first few weeks!

You don't need one, so I wouldn't bother. Only thing I would say about the snuzpod is that it's quite big and daunting for babies at the beginning, and it took a month or so for our little one to take to it.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/01/2021 20:00

Total waste of money, use the snuzpod instead

If the baby is daunted by the size of it then swaddle (learn how to do this as it’s fantatsic)

IamC · 05/01/2021 20:01

We've ummed and ahhhed over a Moses basket, but ultimately it's just another thing to take up space.

So we've decided not to in the end. The pram bassinet will come in handy. Sleeps in the sling and bouncer will be fine occasionally, and then there's always the option of the crib upstairs when we do the 'sleep when they sleep' thing - though I might be kidding myself with that one.

Bookishnerd · 05/01/2021 20:01

Absolutely concur with @ShirleyPhallus - swaddle swaddle swaddle

dementedpixie · 05/01/2021 20:03

Never had one
Used carrycot bit of the pram or a buggy instead

firstimemamma · 05/01/2021 20:03

I never had one. Ds napped mainly on me or sometimes in the pram. If u want one then get one but don't let anyone pressurise you - if you let it happen the once they might do it again and again and it's your baby.

GirlCalledJames · 05/01/2021 20:04

You’ll be lucky to get a baby that sleeps anywhere but on you and if you do get one buy the moses basket then.

Lb603 · 05/01/2021 20:06

I had my first baby last week. I have a next to me for my bedroom, and the uppababy cruz buggy. She's not slept well in the next to me, so spends most of her time sleeping in the bassinet of the buggy, I bought a rocker stand for it on amazon and she seems to like it. I'm hopeful in a few weeks I'll be able to move her into the next to me at night time :)

Zofloramummy · 05/01/2021 20:06

I had a Moses basket and my dd used it alot but she grew out of it by 5 months. I breastfed so once she fell asleep she got popped into the basket and carried around the house with me! It was light weight and portable. Whatever suits you though OP

peachypetite · 05/01/2021 20:12

Mine is used a lot but i am lucky that my baby will sleep there on her own and doesn’t always want to be on us. There’s no way I could be bothered carrying the snuzpod up and down the stairs all day. I got mine quite cheap from aldi.

swiftt · 05/01/2021 20:27

My mum insists that I need a Moses basket too! I was planning on using the carrycot part of my pram, or a snuzpod.

HungryHippo20 · 05/01/2021 20:48

We've got one only because it's my mums from
When my brother and I were babies.....otherwise wouldn't have bought one tbh

BabyC21 · 05/01/2021 20:53

I’m only 8 weeks but this is what I’m planning on getting for downstairs. I figure it’ll take the Moses basket role initially and then grow with the baby

Chicco Baby Hug 4-in-1 Crib, Glacial www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081T7FWS3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_2fn9Fb5BJQJEX?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Oodlenoodle12 · 05/01/2021 20:58

We were offered 2 but never took them as we had so many things. My LO ended up sleeping in the bassinet from the pram downstairs and we had a swinging crib beside our bed. She grew out of them quite quickly. Do what you're comfortable with.

Cobbsgirl92 · 05/01/2021 21:02

We’ve got one for our 4 week old, we would have been lost without it!
We have a next to me crib for the bedroom but initially he didn’t sleep well in it so we used the Moses basket in our room, it was brilliant!
Now at 4 weeks we’ve moved our son into the next to me crib upstairs and he’s in the Moses basket downstairs.
Compared to the next to me cribs they are really cheap and worth the money in my opinion, it means we can move him around downstairs with us whilst he sleeps.
Ultimately I think it depends on the baby as our son likes to sleep in our arms but equally he also sleeps well in his Moses basket and next to me
Crib.
If you decide you want one when he’s here then Amazon prime would always get you one quickly Smile

Mother2princess · 05/01/2021 21:30

I've bought the chicco hug for downstairs that was £160 and for upstairs I've bought a tutti bambini cozzee crib that is fab also has a reflux postion on it

MimiDaisy11 · 05/01/2021 22:05

I think they look useful and nice but I'm not getting one as they only last until the baby is about 6 months so it seems a waste.

1manwenttomow · 05/01/2021 22:21

I had one for my eldest and he outgrew it within 3 weeks so I got rid of it before my 2nd only she was much slower at growing so ended up with another and she was in it until she was about 5 months so it's totally your decision, if you have a snuzpod anyway for night time then you should be OK with the pram bassinet or on you during the day.

Sls668 · 05/01/2021 22:37

I didn’t buy you as I thought I didn’t need one but she wouldn’t sleep in her bedside crib as it was too spacious so now she sleeps in a Moses basket inside the bedside crib, I’ve heard of quite a few people that have had to do that. Start without one and see how you get on, you can get them cheap enough on next day delivery if needed

Lilice · 05/01/2021 22:59

I used one for baby 1 and 2 - they slept in it day and night until loved to the cot - but baby 3 hated it and hardly ever slept in it

cafedesreves · 05/01/2021 23:01

I used it instead of a next to me and found it brilliant. Plus it's only £30!

BertieBotts · 05/01/2021 23:03

I never used one. First baby slept on me/in bouncer/on sofa. Second one slept in pram carrycot and later in his cot.
