What to use for daytime naps?

Hi guys, I'm pregnant with my first child and not due until April but with the Black Friday sales have managed to get most of the main things we need for little one e.g. Travel system, nursery furniture etc

I've ordered a Next To Me for sleeping overnight but some people have suggested I'll still need a moses basket downstairs for daytime naps.. I didn't really want to get both and was wondering what else people have used instead for downstairs? I've seen a lot of people mention a sleepyhead but they seem really pricey so what else could we use?

Carry cot from pram or a moses basket. There are a few bouncers then turn into a crib/lie flat too. I'm due on 5th May and have been looking into this too.

Sleepyheads and other sleep pods are a SIDS risk.

I used the carry cot section of the pram downstairs. Worked really well! If I was wanting to be upstairs then I’d use the bedside crib.

Moses basket didn't last 2 mins with DD1 and she wasn't exactly a big baby. With DD2 we used the snüzpod for upstairs naps if I was having a snooze too. Of the carrycot of the pram if downstairs. The carrycot did her till about 5/6 months so worked out tons better

We had planned to use the pram carry cot but it was such a faff taking it on and off that we bought a Moses basket after a few days - for the price, it was money well spent and we used it for 6 months or so for naps and also for just putting DS somewhere safe if we needed to pop to the loo/make a cup of tea etc

New parents buy way more than they actually need, in my experience! In my case, the carrycot section of the pram used to detach and my daughter used to sleep in that (it was basically like a moses basket). When my son came along, he would sleep in his crib in the bedroom and I had a baby monitor so I could hear when he woke up. You basically just need somewhere secure, where the baby isn't going to roll off and fall or pull anything over her/his face - so you could even set something up on the floor if it's not draughty and there are no pets etc. Also it sounds like you're buying brand new stuff - have a look on local selling sites and Facebook Marketplace for second hand. This sort of stuff is still pretty much brand new when it's no longer needed.

I bought a ton of stuff when I was pregnant with my daughter. When my son came along I realised I needed much much less, and that retailers prey on new parents' lack of knowledge and guilt to sell them stuff they don't need. I didn't even use a pram with my son - I carried him in a sling. And I realised I didn't need a crib, I should have just bought a cotbed from the beginning. It's fine to wait and buy things as and when you need them - don't think that with Black Friday, you need to buy now or get ripped off later. You won't save money by buying stuff you end up not needing. And as I said, there's a huge second hand market in virtually still-brand-new baby stuff.

Pram or chair thing that lies flat. Quite often on a mat in the floor. Something similar to what they’re going to sleep in at night is a good idea

We use a Moses basket downstairs - I've found it handy at nighttime too as next2me is a bit too big for my newborn.

Another vote for the carrycot bit of the pram

But a sleepyhead was useful for chucking her in when I was in the shower and she still goes in it now at 8mo

I intend to use the carrycot from pram but also got this nest for when on the sofa which is 4x cheaper than sleepyhead.

I used my arms!

We have a travel cot with a bassinet for day time sleeping and visiting relatives if that is ever permitted again!

She used it for the first 3 or 4 weeks and now she only really sleeps in my arms! She's nearly 16 weeks and we are starting to get her into a bit of a sleep routine in the evenings and we can get her in it for an hour before we go up to bed

We used to have a baby bean bag like this one for napping downstairs xx

Seems like a lot of you are voting for the carry cot from your pushchairs, isn't it a bit of a faff to keep moving it on and off all the time?

@Sober4Summer20 I have seen some bean bag chairs in a baby shop by my work but didn't know if they were suitable from newborn and they're also quite pricey..

@ShalomToYouJackie I have seen a lot of people comment about the sleepyheads being a SIDS risk but then so many people use them and absolutely swear by them it's so confusing but I definitely won't be risking it!

@Disappointedkoala how is the Next2Me too big for a newborn? Isn't that the whole point of them or is it just that your newborn looks tiny in there and they prefer the cosiness of a moses basket?

Haha, don't judge but we used a changing mat on the floor with some nice warm blankets.

Have a look at the baby box co. We used this downstairs and now use it as a memory box. It's quite big but light and comes with mattress. Was ideal for us

I don't like Moses baskets.

I used either a bouncer or the play mat. I had one that had sides that came up.

Both kids slept in that during the day

Yeah both of mine seem to prefer the coziness of the basket. I have big babies but they suddenly seem tiny in the next 2me!

I used a Moses basket or a bouncy chair that reclined almost fully.

Carrycot for me too for DC1. Mine clipped on and off the frame really easily. We actually bought that buggy becuase it did and then the frame folded easily as front door was up a few steps.

DC2 had all her naps till age 1 in arms or in the buggy on the move.

We had a next 2 me up stairs and a cheap version downstairs, tbh he slept in my arms most of the time as he was prem, he also slept in his swing
A new born will look small in a next to me but we used it with our Prem and he was fine just follow safe sleep rules, they are so handy if baby is refluxly to as u can tilt the end up

I used a Tiny Love 3 in 1 Napper for downstairs. It rocks, props up a little, lays flat, has an arm with a mobile over it with music if needed and, when they are old enough, sits up to a chair. It lasted til ds was around 8mo.

Carrycot from pram, means it’s handy to then go out with baby asleep or leave them sleeping after you get home. We have continued using pram for naps now in main pram seat also as he takes forever to nap in cot

The next to me is definitely suitable from newborn, our 6 month old can’t use his any more (since 5 months) as he can semi climb out so if it wasn’t used from newborn it would be pointless.

Look at Jukki.uk they do baby nests that are a fraction of the cost of sleepyhead. Personally I wouldn't bother with buying something expensive for downstairs like a moses basket etc as its not that long till they're upstairs napping.
