Newborn clothes size- did your baby fit it?

What did your baby weigh and did they fit newborn size??

My daughter was born 6lb 12oz and was in tiny baby clothes for about 5-6 weeks before going into newborn size! Second baby due in 8 or so weeks and so far he's about 25th percentile so following potentially similar growth to his sister BUT if he is going to be 7-8lb (or more) I'm wondering if he will fit newborn 😬

My babies were 7lb 12 oz and 8lb 2oz. I had to buy newborn clothes for the first ( I knew better with the second) as I only had 0-3 months, on advice from my sister, who's babies were both over 10lbs. Everyone laughed at the "doll sized" cardigans I knitted , but both of my sons wore them. 0-3 is usually quite long and hung off my son's feet by a few inches.

Vanannabananna · 10/11/2020 12:01

Nope! 10lb 1oz baby. No one knew he was gonna be so big! Luckily I had up to 10lb which I squeezed him into whilst DH rushed home to get the 0-3!

ArmchairCritics · 10/11/2020 12:01

Both 7lb5 and 8lb3.5 were in newborn for a good few weeks. 0-3 would have been absolutely massive. Mainly John Lewis/M&S.

Pukeymama · 10/11/2020 12:05

I had quite a big baby (9.7lbs) and he was still in newborn for a few weeks. I got DH to panic buy some 0-3 months whilst we were still in the hospital but they were huge even on a big baby.

Caspianberg · 10/11/2020 12:06

I think length is the key thing. Ds is now 6 months and he fits cardigans and trousers in 3-6 months still, otherwise 6-9. But anything that goes top to bottom like baby vests, sleepsuits and dungarees he needs 9-12

NameChange30 · 10/11/2020 12:08

Some places do 0-1 month a ize which is probably a sensible buy, you could put two of each size in your hospital bag (newborn and 0-1 month) unless you're expecting a very small baby (and would need tiny baby) or a very big baby (and would need 0-3).

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/11/2020 12:09

10lb 11 DS went straight into 'up to a month' but was in 0-3 about 2 weeks later. We had so much that didn't fit, I was a little disappointed tbh!

Trousersareoverrated · 10/11/2020 12:10

DD was 8lb and was in newborn clothes for ages. I actually didn’t realise that there was a difference between 0-3 month size and newborn size so all we had at the beginning was 0-3 month clothes and the poor little thing was swamped by them. Didn’t do her any harm though!

MarshmallowsOnToast · 10/11/2020 12:13

I kept a few second hand newborn items on hand, not thinking for a minute they'd be used as I was expecting a large baby.

He was 9lb 7oz and wore the newborn for a fair few weeks before moving onto 0-3

4amWitchingHour · 10/11/2020 12:39

Agree with PPs that length rather than weight is key. DS was 9lb and never fitted into newborn, went straight into 0-3 - he was long rather than chunky

steppemum · 10/11/2020 12:49

10lb 1oz - went straight into 0-3 months (for a month and was then in next size up. he is now 6'3" Grin)

8lbs 7oz - newborn for a month or so.

10lbs 7 oz - 0-3 months. But she didn't grow quite as quickly as dc1!

RandyGiles06 · 10/11/2020 13:00

Mine was over 9lbs and fitted into newborn for about 3 weeks, I knew I was having a big baby so brought mainly 0-3 to the hospital and DH had to bring newborn clothes from home because 0-3 were way too big!

rottiemum88 · 10/11/2020 13:06

DS was 9lbs 13 and went straight into 0-3. He's always been long and thin, so I'm expecting him to be tall like his dad. Shoes don't seem to last him two minutes either Grin

bathorshower · 10/11/2020 13:33

Another one with a small baby - 6lb 8 oz. We had some newborn stuff, and it was huge; she ended up in 'tiny baby' for the first month or so.

EyeDrops · 10/11/2020 13:38

My girls were 9lb 2oz and 10lb 7oz, both fitted into newborn for a week or two but that was it! I think it's worth having a couple of bits (if not expensive) as they'll fit it one way or another (either for a week or to, or will grow into them) then you can get more or not if needed.

GrandTheftWalrus · 10/11/2020 13:55

DD was in first size, then newborn then finally went into 0-3 at about 4 months. Shes always been "behind" in clothes sizes. Shes 4 next week and still in 3-4. I got her 4-5 but its far too big.

She was 58cm and 7lbs 2oz when she was born

EllieJai44 · 10/11/2020 13:58

Thanks for all the replies guys! I don't think this guy will be very long as his femur length is actually on the small side but he could end up with a long body! Haha least its reassuring that is hes around 8lb he will still likely go into newborn- especially as I have loads!

My DD born in August was predicted 8lbs 8 but was only 7lbs 3. I packed so much 0-3 and she's still not fitting into it yet! Tiny baby was great for the first month, then newborn and now she's in up to 1 month in Next. There's so many variations it's so confusing!!!

peachypetite · 10/11/2020 15:04

Guess it depends what you mean by newborn too. Different shops sell newborn up to 7lbs, 10lbs etc.

AegonT · 10/11/2020 15:10

7lbs 10oz and she fit the up to 7lbs newborn/tiny baby size for a week. Then up to 1 month (10lbs). 0-3 would have been huge.

EllieJai44 · 10/11/2020 15:25

@peachypetite all newborn size I've got is up to 7.5lb, up to 1 month goes to 10lb

She was in newborn but not for long, she was only 7lbs 2oz but she was just long and skinny so they fit her in length and were still baggy everywhere else!

xxlannixx · 10/11/2020 15:30

My previous was 10lb7oz and she was in the up to one month range that you can get from a fair few places.

planningaheadtoday · 10/11/2020 15:47

My first went straight into 3 month clothes. He was very long (94th centile) and needed the extra length in sleep suits.

With my second I bought a lot of newborn and 0-3 months all ready and she was born early and very very small. By the time she'd grown a bit the seasons were all wrong. So again I ended up with lots they couldn't wear.

With internet shopping so easy now, I'd wait, measure that baby once it arrives and put a big order in somewhere.

LolaLollypop · 10/11/2020 15:53

Both DD and DS were 6lb 12oz! One born at 39+4 and the other 40+1. I think that’s just the size I make ‘em!
Both were in tiny baby for no more than 2 weeks. Newborn from about 2-4 weeks then 0-3 months once they hit about 1 month old.
