a friend of mine reckons there's an ancient law which means that policemen have to hold out their capes around you (presumably would need at least two of them to do this) while you squat & pee in the street!

DillyDally · 20/10/2004 16:21

I got let in free to one when I was preggers at a railway station. Saved myself a whole twenty pence - useful for a curly wurly emergency i s'pose.

KateandtheGirls · 20/10/2004 16:22

How do they get past the barriers?

bundle · 20/10/2004 16:22

dillydally maybe there should be a free curly wurly law too

emmatmg · 20/10/2004 16:22

Not sure, but apparently you can ask a police man if you can use his hat.

Not sure if he has to let you though

Angeliz · 20/10/2004 16:22

I've heard this somewhere too,
LOL at Dillydally

beansprout · 20/10/2004 16:23

Who do I contact for a refund for all the money I have spent in the last few months?!

Bunglie · 20/10/2004 16:25

Nope you did not dream it...you may also urinate in the street and not be prosecuted for performing a lewd(sp) act....
I personally would not try out the street bit...but I certainly would try to avoid 20p for using a loo...hence I have a RADAR key.

emmatmg · 20/10/2004 16:26

what's a RADAR key bunglie?

cupcakes · 20/10/2004 16:27

When I used to work at Harrods they charged £1 to use the loo - but it was free for pregnant ladies and children!

Bunglie · 20/10/2004 16:30

Its a key that you pay for, not much and if you are in a wheelchair, or disabled, it lets you unlock the disabled loos....they are not used as frequently as they are kept locked and you need the 'key' and they are as a rule a lot cleaner.
I would advise anyone who is eligable to get one..IHTH

Tinker · 20/10/2004 16:31

I begged in HMV to use their toilet when I was pregnant and they still said no!

emmatmg · 20/10/2004 16:33

Oh I see.
thanks for the explanation

bakedpotato · 20/10/2004 16:38

yes , i remember availing myself of Al Fayed's black marble facilities last time around (they are black marble aren't they?)

today however was in waterloo stn so knightsbridge too far to waddle

i should have gone and asked at the barrier at the waterloo ladies, but there were no attendants in view. i held it in all the way home. i bally well was not going to pay 20p for a wee in my condition! admittedly, feel a bit stupid now. i'm always doing these little 'protests' that no one will ever notice.

incidentally, the 'accessibility' toilet, for disabled and babychange use, was, naturally, locked. great for radar-key holders, but not, i would guess, for most mothers with smelly babies

ugh, tinker, i will blacklist HMV from now on (yeah, right, as if i regularly go out and buy CDs)

I've always regarded McDonalds, Burger King etc as fair game when it comes to using their toilets. They have to be good for something I reckon.

cupcakes · 20/10/2004 16:44

for some reason the loos on the first floor at Harrods were called 'luxury washrooms'. Customers used to ask if there were other toilets elsewhere which weren't luxurious but didn't cost a £1! - no, they were all the same!
They used to charge to keep out the vagrants from Hyde Park!

That's probably why they sent you up there, trying to get more money out of you!

posyhairdresser · 20/10/2004 18:27

Do Harrods still charge?

bunny2 · 20/10/2004 18:29

In the good old days when I had a Harrods account, I used their toilets free of charge. How times change, now I can barely afford Primark.

cupcakes · 20/10/2004 18:37

I don't think they charge anymore, it was REALLY unpopular!

bunny2 · 20/10/2004 18:44

but they were lovely and clean. Let the riff-raff in and people start peeing on seats.

Hulababy · 20/10/2004 18:57

Me and DD went to the oilet at Harrods in their so called luxury washrooms. No charge at all, but there was a lady sat in the corner of the room with a tip basket next to her. We didn't tip I'm afraid. And TBH they weren't particularly luxury either - just normal, standard toilets IMO.

Cam · 20/10/2004 20:46

The toilets on the 4th (childrens) floor of Harrods are free

cupcakes · 20/10/2004 21:12

I think they're all free now - my dh went in the ones adjacent to the book dept. the other month and there was no charge.
