Did you stop caffeine intake?

I just found out I’m pregnant, about 4 weeks along. Before I knew I was having about 2 cups of tea a day at work, and since I’ve found out I’ve had 1 coffee per day.

Is this silly of me? Should I just stop the caffeine now? I know it’s under the limit of what’s allowed but I’m wondering if it would be just safer to not have any at all (just like stopping drinking)

I want to give this baby the best chance I can!

I've switched to decaf tea but I do have a normal coffee in the morning (mainly to encourage 💩 since I'm so constipated.....another lovely symptom!)

Trufflepuffpuff · 06/09/2020 15:34

I switched to decaf tea and coffee (occasionally) because it felt like a fairly easy switch for me and I haven't missed it that much. I do sometimes have a Diet Coke or a proper tea though. I think one coffee a day is fine.

NiceGerbil · 06/09/2020 15:34

It's one report that has said no caffeine that was reported and the reporter I saw made sure to reiterate there are lots of studies saying it's fine in moderation and UK guidance has not changed.

The news love to report anything which makes life more difficult for pregnant women. Remember the one about how we had to avoid using any household cleaners, sofas etc.

I was pregnant years ago and avoided coffee but still had Coke (less caffeine) and tea has less as well.

crosser62 · 06/09/2020 15:35

I did, switched to decaf everything.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 06/09/2020 15:37

I did.

For me it was easier to give it up than worrying if I had it.

Sairafina · 06/09/2020 15:39

My Dr said one cup of coffee a day is fine so I have half in the morning and half in the afternoon

MaverickDanger · 06/09/2020 15:39

I went off tea and coffee in my first trimester, and have now become obsessed with decaf coffee.

I’ll have a Diet Coke every now and again.

OrDis · 06/09/2020 15:45

I went right off tea and coffee in the first trimester due to the sickness, but would have a can of coke every now and again. Now I probably have a coffee every few days, just when I feel like I need a pick me up.

HolyMolyMeOhMy · 06/09/2020 15:46

I stopped tea and coffee but mostly because just the thought of any hot drink whilst pregnant made me want to be sick. There is some nice decaf coffees out there if you want to switch, not sure about teas.

Cafeaulait27 · 06/09/2020 15:46

Ok thanks guys :)

I think I might just have one tea at work. I usually have a couple and I’m worried if I stop people will know! I also can’t switch to decaf, as our office provides tea bags people would know something was up if I suddenly started taking my own tea bag to the kitchen!

Definitely not planning on telling my work until I hit 12 weeks just in case something goes wrong, so I don’t want anyone to figure it out!

I just want time to go faster so I can start telling people ☺️

Nope. The suggested limit comes from a poor extrapolation from tests done on mice. You may wish to read Expecting Better and decide for yourself.

Bluejayway91 · 06/09/2020 16:13

I used to drink a lot of coffee before pregnancy but have stopped. Not really due to the caffeine aspect, but I just hate the taste now.

I did have a diet Coke a while back and it made the baby go a bit wild and I felt sick, so I've not had any caffeine since.

I do occasionally have a decaf tea, but apart from that I don't really have hot drinks anymore.

Shayisgreat · 06/09/2020 16:16

I went off coffee in the first trimester and the last 8 weeks so didn't have any at all then. Even the thought if it gave me a sore tummy. From about 17 weeks until 32 weks I had 1 cup of coffee nearly every day and really enjoyed it!

60sPony · 06/09/2020 16:18

I still have a coffee a day... I need it! Pregnant and looking after a toddler is draining

Sansa87 · 06/09/2020 16:21

I have. after having a mmc in July (& honestly knowing it was not I did or didn’t do) I did the the normal thing and blamed myself for the odd coffee and full fat coke.

We started trying straight away and I was on decaff tea, & coffee and the gold coke.

Now I’m 5 weeks pg again, & I’ve gone off coffee, & the tea tastes the same. I do miss the coke, but the gold does the same.

For me it was for mental health reasons. If I lose it again, I can’t look for reasons to blame myself (I’m sure I’d still find something)

I have a friend who had to drink flat full fat clean through the whole pregnancy due to it being the only think to not make her sick. Her 6 week old baby is beautiful with no issues

orangejuicer · 06/09/2020 16:29

I had one coffee in the morning (eg a 1 shot latte) and then had tea or decaf coffee for the rest of the day in moderation.

shreddednips · 06/09/2020 16:37

I had one caffeinated coffee a day, I had terrible headaches during pregnancy that paracetamol didn't touch. A coffee cured it almost instantly. I did just stick to the one though.

crosser62 · 06/09/2020 16:37

Following multiple miscarriages, I cut out absolutely everything that was “bad” because for me, I needed to know that there was absolutely nothing that I had done to contribute to loss after loss.
It was my very weird way of thinking at very very stressful times.

sarahc336 · 06/09/2020 16:59

Nope I'm in my second pregnancy now and like the first I just reduced it to what the nhs states is a safe amount, my first turned out ok for doing this xx

Sansa87 · 06/09/2020 17:00

@crosser62 seems like we are on the same wavelength.

Awful we are doing this to ourselves, but for me, the only way to keep sane.

The full fat coke in my fridge is screaming my name though.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 06/09/2020 17:02

I did but didn’t give up eg chocolate and things that have v small amounts of caffeine

eternalflame2020 · 06/09/2020 17:20

I've swapped tea for peppermint tea and diet coke for caffeine free diet coke which tastes the same to me!

I found out I was pregnant the day a study released saying that pregnant women shouldn't have any caffeine at all and i saw it as a sign. Although I think the recommended doses are probably fine, I just couldn't risk blaming myself if something went wrong.

SqidgeBum · 06/09/2020 17:25

I went off coffee and tea up to week 17 due to MS but I went back to drinking 1 strong cup in the morning soon after. I only ever had 1 a day.

I also eat brie .... and I had a quarter glass of wine on my wedding anniversary.... and I live off carbs ..... no pregnancy diet is ever going to be pregnant. I say have the coffee if you want it.

SqidgeBum · 06/09/2020 17:26

no pregnancy diet is going to be perfect

Soubriquet · 06/09/2020 17:28

I did because I immediately went off tea which was a massive shock for me

I love a cup of tea in the morning and I just couldn’t drink it
